September 8 Plant Swap: Plant trades thread

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Fall Plant Swap at Critter's home in Frederick, Saturday Sept. 8, noon to 6.

This thread is for listing your haves and wants for the Fall Plant Swap.

Please post your "haves" list in bold letters, to make it easy to distinguish from your "wants."

It is not necessary to pre-arrange trades for the swap. Arranging some trades in advance works well for some people, especially if they keep those plants separate from the ones that are generally available when they set up their plant area at the swap. But there will be plenty of plants available for swapping regardless.

Even if you don't want to pre-arrange any swaps, this list is a good way to see what people are interested in from you and to know what other people might have available. Feedback on this thread can let you know if you should dig up every lilac start you have, or if there are only 2 people who don't yet have black-eyed susans in their garden, or if nobody but nobody wants any more of my Chocolate Mint!

Reserved for organizational details and questions/answers about swapping

The first thing to mention is that you can come whether or not you bring plants to swap! I don't think it'll be as crazed as the spring swap in terms of sheer numbers of plants (although I could be surprised). And whether you bring anything or not, you can go home with a bundle of Kentucky Colonel Spearmint (in front of the deck) and Chocolate Peppermint (to the left of the driveway) from my garden beds!

We've also been thinking about having people bring a doorprize type item... a special plant, a useful or decorative garden item, whatever you think would make a nice gift. (If you buy something, please keep it under $10... this time of year, that could mean quite a nice perennial on sale!) We'll put those all on one table. Everyone who brings a goodie will put their name in the "hat." When your name is called, you get to pick a prize (there will be a list, so check every so often in case you don't hear your name being called... and be sure you've had a pick before you leave!).

For pre-arranged trades, please try to mark the items ahead of time to make them easy to swap and to keep them separate from your other items. I think we all found out at the spring swap that you almost can't be too organized, LOL. If you can't attend, please let people know (call me that day if need be) so people aren't holding things for you.

Please do your best to mark your plants -- with your name, too -- to cut down on "mystery" plants the following week.

If you're bringing a lot of plants, a small table of some kind might be useful. (Plants can go under the table afterwards too... I don't have a lot of shade!)

OK, what did I forget to mention?

This is where I'll put my list.... and I'll edit it as I divide or pot up!

Needless to say, since the swap is at my place people will be able to take cuttings and so forth on the spot, also.

HAVE:
Houseplants or tender perennials available for cuttings (I'll try to start ahead if people are interested):
Angel Wing Begonia (coral/peach blooming one and also a pink one)
Spider Plants (green, variegated, maybe also curly)
Wandering Jew (various colors)
Swedish Ivy
Plectranthus -- 2 kinds, a silvery one and a purple-stemmed one
Scented Geraniums -- 'Attar of Roses', 'Cocoa Mint Rose', 'Snowflake Rose', 'Lime', lost-name citrusy one, maybe 'Cody's Nutmeg'
Trailing Coleus -- green lobed leaves with burgundy centers
Episcias -- will try to stick cuttings ahead of time, or will bag on the spot
(please note... no African Violet plantlets or leaves, as they're still in quarantine)
ornamental sweet potatoes (cuttings) -- Tricolor (pink and cream) and variegated white & green

Hardy Perennials:
'Kentucky Colonel' spearmint (the best!) -- help yourself, the bed in front of the deck is full of it.
'Chocolate Peppermint' -- help yourself, there's a "hedge" of it to the left of the driveway
Other mints -- named, in pots on the back patio... help yourself to cuttings but please do not pull up
Chocolate Daisy for Chantel

If you see it and you like it -- just ask. If it can't be cut or dug on the spot, I'll see about propagating it for you for next spring.

WANT:

All the Vinca major I can get my paws on... preferably rooted... potted would be nice but isn't necessary (half will go up to Pittsburgh in mid-October, in pots, and the other half I'll overwinter in a bed here and take up next spring). Mom and Dad said either green or variegated would be fine, but green might be hardier for them. They have officially given up on growing grass under those big old maples!

A Pregnant onion from Gita if she can spare one. :-)

I think the fall swap would be an ideal time to do some seed trading, sure! LOL, maybe we will need a midwinter get-together so we can all rummage through our collective seed stashes.... ' :-)

That Chocolate Peppermint is still my favorite for iced tea, despite there being 8 or 9 other mints out there on the patio also! 'Kentucky Colonel' spearmint is running wild in the bed below the deck (but you'll see -- it's a pretty good citizen, not actually choking out other plants), so it will also be available for anyone who missed it last time. Hmmm, I suppose it's time for me to start by adding those mints to my "haves" list... as soon as the system lets me edit again!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK! I have a few things "collecting" for the Swap. Not doing any of this with just the Swap in mind, but a normal need to dig up, pot up and propagate type of a thing.
I will add to this list as I 'find" or "remember" more plants I could bring.

So far I have:

1. A lot of 11/2" little clay pots with a baby "Pregnant Onion" bulblet in it. Most of them are rooted and have one small, green shoot coming out the top already.

2. 6-8-- 4" pots of pulled up seedlings from my "Northern Sea Oats". 4-5 in each. Small-but rooted.

3. About 6 pots of rooted/growing cuttings of "Angel Wing (Cane) Begonia". About 3 cuttings in each. Now about 12" tall. I have had this plant for over 25 years and have always cut it back in the Spring and rooted the cuttings.

4. 8 - 4" pots of rooted Spider Plant babies growing. Good size. Well established. Variagated green/white. White on the edges of the leaves.

5. One 2' tall seedling of a regular "Rose of Sharon"--lavender color. Found it growing in one of my beds. Have picture.

6. One "something" that grew amid my Vinca Ground cover" that looks like some kind of evergreen, shrubby thing(?????) It is in a 6" pot. A mystery!

7. Oodles of Stella D'Oro Daylily divisions.

8. IF we are also bringing seeds to trade/give away---I can bring a lot of different kinds! Nothing super common.....Lots of neat plants.

Will add as I find more.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I wanted to add a note... I'm thinking it would be really fun to have a sort of raffle where everybody brings one "special" item, an unusual plant, or a nice larger specimen, or something in a pretty pot... We'll put them all on a table, and everybody will put their name in a hat. Then we'll draw names, one at a time, and as your name is called you'll come up and take the plant or item of your choice off the table.

If you don't have something propagated to share, you can buy something, but let's put a price limit on that -- maybe $10.

I'll put a note about this on the organization thread for the swap also, but I wanted to mention it here as people are looking around to see what they'll have available for the swap. For example, if larlienda can't find a "special trade" for her nice big lilac sapling (I love lilacs!), that might be something she'd like to put on the raffle table.

***
Gita, you know we're all after one of those little pregnant onion plants... I'd love one, please!

Sally, I'd love to grow a 'Little Gem' magnolia if your cuttings take! Nicotiana seed would be lovely too -- that's a nice variety, bet it smells wonderful!

Larlienda, please put me down for teasel... I'd love to start a little patch of it, maybe together with the money plants I wintersowed this year... they're nice for dried arrangements! I have a friend who wanted seedlings from my mimosa (blooming like mad this summer) next spring, so I'd happily swap for some of those.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

What is a "Teasel"?????? Got a picture?

I am also now collecting seeds from the Pregnant Onion. Have NO idea how long a process it would be until they even grow into baby "onions" of any kind.
Also collecting seeds from my "Broken Colors" and "Lime Light"
4 O'clocks. Any interest??? I guess, if we are exchanging seeds as well, I will have some to share.

Larienda----
Forget about trying to root a Camellia cutting!!!!! I am serious! It is one of those impossible tasks if you do not have just the right environment, seed boxes, Greenhouses, etc to do so.
I have been communicating with Mike-(Mqiq77-- the resident Camellia propagation expert) for quite a while now and he thinks that I have achieved just about the "impossible" because I have ONE Camellia cutting that actually has rooted. Still not sure it has. I had two. Just lost the other one this week. It has taken me TWO years--and I am still not sure the remaining one will make it. So your idea of rooting some camellia cuttings by the Swap is a pipe dream. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news....

Critter----------
I LOVE your idea of a raffle for some "Special" plants. You know we all will want to win something nice! Are you limiting this to just plants, or any other garden-related items? That would be even more fun!

My baby "Pregnant Onions" are really NOT doing anything for now. I think it is just too hot and dry, and they are in these teeny-tiny clay pots! I may dig around for more from the Mama plants and maybe put them all in small plastic pots--2-3 each. That would give them a bit more chance at growing.

I will be visiting a friend here on 8/12 who lives on 5 acres and has unbelievable plants and stuff in her Garden. 3 ponds, chickens, woods all over, etc. Maybe I can sneak some seedlings/cuttings. Will ask her.

We just had the most God-awful T-storm! Rain coming down so hard I could hardly drive. Pouring rain!!!! That was coming home from work less than 40 minutes ago. Now it is all sunny and everything has dried off. You would never know it rained! I just hope it will excuse me from having to water everything today and maybe tomorrow. Hope! :o)
Oh, well! ....................so it goes! When it rains--it pours! And not much of it soaks in. Too much of a good thing--but better than nothing.

Best--Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think plants and other garden-related items would be great prizes -- why not? Just think in terms of something special that you'd like to go home with... a houseplant in full bloom, a lush hanging basket, a choice potted perennial or shrub, a planter or a garden sign... I know there are some great cooks in this group, too, so I'm not sure we should even limit the prizes to plant-related items...

Send some of that rainstorm thisaway....

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I wish I could go....I will have just started back to Rutgers and won't be able to...I so wish I lived closer. Chantell I have milkweed seed if you want? I'd be glad to mail it or if anyone is passing by Mt. Laurel, NJ on the way to the swap they can stop by and pick up milkweed seeds and/or plants. I also have a few extra black eyed Susan's; beauty berry bushes and I'm sure other things. Sounds like a really fun/nice time...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

We'll miss you, and you'll have to keep us posted on your studies!

I just gathered a bunch of seeds from my milkweed (Asclepias incarnata, I think)... I'm pretty sure all the blooms were just white, but the butterflies did like them.

It's fine with me if anyone who can't come to the swap wants to use this thread to arrange trades... just make it really, really clear please that you're talking about trading by mail and not at the swap. In fact, it might be best to work out the details of the trade via Dmail, just so this thread doesn't get too tangled. Thanks!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

*bumping* up because the date is fast approaching!

I just took cuttings from my unknown peach Angel Wing begonia (2 sets of 5 cuttings) and from my trailing coleus in the same pot...

I'm so far behind on all my garden and plant stuff! I'll do my best to do some repotting of Episcias before the 8th so I can take cuttings... With the Scented Geraniums and the "fancy" hybrid mints, I might have to resort to handing out scissors and letting people take what they'd like!

:-)

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Have:
Plectranthus Mona Lavender (6) 1-Jill
Plectranthus Vicks Menothlatum (1 potted) (2 cuttings)
Sweet potato vine (3) 1-Jill
Coleus Freckles (4)
Trailing lacy type coleus that Critter gave me started (4)
Forget me not Victoria Blue Dwarf (Happy and Chantell)
Forget me not Victoria Pink Dwarf Seeds (Chantell)
NOID Hemerocallis day lilies [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com] (4)

Wants:
Hostas, ferns

Jill, I hope you don't mind about the coleus. I don't want to be like the friend your mother gave her pot luck recipe to. I just hate to throw away cuttings when I have to cut back.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, I definitely want to overwinter a bit of that 'Mona Lavender' please! What color sweet potato vine do you have? I've got a variegated white and green one and also some 'Tricolor' I think (pink and cream variegation)... I can certainly do cuttings of either one, will try to get some in water so they start rooting. :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Is anyone here seriously interested in some Stella D'Oro dayliy? PLEASE let me know! Here or by D-mail.
If not--that will be one less box to bring to the Swap.

I will add it to my "haves" list.

I dug up about 6-7 clumps that were so overcrowded that they were not flourishing any more. Many "moons" in the same spot!
Tore them all apart in small divisions. Have TONS!

These were from my "YUK" bed with all the Maple roots everywhere. No wonder they were not "flourishing". This bed is constantly dry....dry....dry.....NO wonder! A 40' tall maple just sucks it all up!

I will re-plant some in the same border after amending the soil as best I can---since I cannot really dig there too easily. I am sure a small part of the tree will LOVE me for it.

If no one is interested, I will put in an ad in out local "Pennysaver" and sell them--like, maybe, 10+ divisions for $5. The "Pennysaver" (a Baltimore County Publication) allows you to post FREE ads once a week as long as the sales price does not exceed $200. A great, little pamphlet we get delivered in the mail on Thursdays.

Gita.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'd love some divisions if you really have extras -- I have just the spot.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Isn't it amazing just how many DLs end up being in an older clump like that? My favorite reblooming yellow DL is 'Happy Returns' rather than 'Stella', but both are great choices for lots of blooms!

Not all of my little columbine seedlings made it through the summer (the ones in the bigger pots did better, so I hope anybody who took home the ones in the 2 inch cell packs up-potted them), so I don't know how many I'll have to share... I'll try to sort through them and see. If they all make it through the winter, I'll have extras in the spring!

I'm a little shame-faced at asking for more vinca, because people were so generous with it this spring... I had planted most of it in a bed at one side of the house, so it could get nicely established before I took it up to my parents' yard, and then I had an irrigation malfunction while we were away and lost almost all of it! :-( There are a few variegated sprigs that have resurfaced, though, and the last time I checked the V. minor that I put in another bed was looking just fine.

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I'll take a Stella D'Oro daylily. Always wanted some, but too lazy to order.

Critter the sweet potato vine is black. Constrasts really well with anything bright green. And I'll definetly save you a mona lavender, I've got several already rooted. They're starting to bloom at the mailbox now and they're really beautiful.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I should've remembered that SPV... it's lovely! Hey, that means we've got 3 colors between us for next year. :-) Thanks!

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Wanna wait till the swap or do you want me to drop them over next week sometime? And would you like any help to set up pre-swap? Got some time to kill between work and italian class on Thursday.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill,

Which Vinca is it that you are looking for?
--Is it the vine? The long-stingy, variegated one?
--Is it the evergreen Ground Cover with the blue flowers?

I am planning to dig up all the Vinca Ground cover that I have around the dying Spruce in the front.
I give up! Been trying to establish this as a ground cover for years. It just won't take! Too dry, I think.

Am thinking of having the old Spruce cut down anyway. Maybe in the fall. The top is dead--going on 3 years now. The middle is getting yukky looking. It is full of dying branches and the trunk is constantly oozing sap, etc....etc.....
BUT--It is a bird nesting Condo!!!! Oh, my goodness. It is full of birds. Don't want to cut it down until all the birds are done with the young'uns.

SO! Anyone want the Vinca ground cover? Hope I will find the time to dig it up.

Oh, Jill.
Three of your 5 seedling Columbines survived. Lost 2 of them. They are still,oh so small, though. I up-potted them quickly into 41/2" pots after the Spring Swap. Been keeping them on my picnic table under the patio roof.
What do you suggest I do with these over the winter? Leave them outside under a pile of leaves against the warmer house? Plant them in the ground?

Thanks, Gita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

My baby columbines did really well surprisingly. In shade and must have gotten overflow from watering the veg garden.
I also could find a spot for a spot of Stella. I also have both kinds of vinca.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally,

Did you plant them in the ground? Should I for the winter???
I don't know what to do.

You know, a bunch of Stellas would do great in the bed along your driveway--where you wanted to plant Pansies.

What time do you want me to be at your house?

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Vinca major is the groundcover I want to plant for my parents in Pittsburgh, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/55546/.

I'm glad at least some of the little columbines made it. The ones I lost got washed out or beat up by a heavy rain, I think. Last year, I overwintered columbines in quart containers, in a sheltered spot against the foundation. Most of them still looked pretty tiny last fall. Nearly all of them came up this spring, and then I planted them out in the back of the garden. I think I'll do the same this year, overwintering at least some of them in quart or trade gallon containers, although I may plant some (duplicates) out this fall. If you overwinter them in pots, you might want to go a little bigger... the quart containers that I used were deli containers, with a good 4 to 6 inch depth of potting mix.

Gita, if you don't get around to dealing with your spruce and its vinca until spring, maybe I can get some from you then... I am sure it will take a couple rounds of planting to get it established where we want it.

I'm so grateful everybody is willing to share their vinca! I know that once you have it, you have it, and it might not seem like a big deal to you to pull some up for me... but have you priced flats of groundcover plants? Dad almost fainted, LOL, and he was so happy to hear I had "sources." :-)

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Critter, I can get you as much vinca as you want at Joyce's any time. Sally, I have one northern sea oats pretty good sized plant you can have. I can save you seeds this fall too.

Gita, I got seeds from my mother's butterfly weed for you when I was there a couple of weeks ago.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, Northern Sea Oats is so cool -- Sally, you'll love it! The same trader who sent me the coral honeysuckle for Hart sent me Northern Sea Oats for my mom. I took a little division from it too, and it put up cute little seed heads last month! I also have a couple of little seedling pots that I'm hoping to overwinter and plant out next spring (probably also up in Pittsburgh).

Hart, did your coral honeysuckle "take" for you? If not, I potted up a piece of it that is doing pretty well, could divide it if necessary... LMK!

I have to look around next week and decide what my "door prize" offering will be... that's going to be fun! Hmm, houseplant or perennial? :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Did you all notice where I have Northern Sea Oat starts in 4" pots I am bringing? There are 4-5 little plants in each pot--about 2"-4" high.

I have about 8 pots. I also have some seeds from it that I got in the original trade about 4 or 5 years ago. My 5 clumps are now pretty hefty and all covered in seed heads. They are in a raised bed right smack next to my big Silver maple. I know this bed, like all the other one is totally matted with the tree's roots. Been planting "tolerant" and "indestructible" plants near this tree.

OK. I will bring a bunch of Stella divisions.

Also dug up my regular light blue iris. Had to go. Want to plant something else there. My neighbor's beautiful, dark red/yellow throats Day Lily. I am digging up a few of her clumps and dividing it. Just so you know--there is no one living in that house for over a year. It will be put on the market soon.

She has the most beautiful, 2-tone blue Iris! Her dad was from Holland and owned a nursery on the Eastern Shore. She got these from him. Maybe I'll sneak a few divisions of it for the door prize table????

Hart,

Thanks for the seeds. If you have directions also, that would help.

Jill,
IF I get around to cutting down the Spruce, it will be in the Fall. I can't do it in the Spring. Too many birds nesting there. So--I better start digging up that vinca! One side "took" the other never did. Will have it for you at the Swap.
Should I trim the runners back????

OK. Gotta get going! 6AM at work today......

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, either trimming or not trimming works for me, but trimming them back a little might make them easier for you to manage, and if you have a chance to pot them up then I'd definitely trim them to lessen transplant shock (yes, I know it's a really tough plant LOL). I figure you've got all fall & winter to deal with the spruce, so I'll understand if you don't get around do digging under it until spring! :-) And since I don't want to be selfish, I should probably ask if you've considered moving your vinca to the area under your silver maple... ?

Oh, you definitely have to rescue some more of that gorgeous iris from next door! And yours are beautiful, also! I think the ones I got from you didn't make it (there's still some sign of the rhizome, but no green)... but this is a much better time of year to dig and plant iris.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

My experience with little seedings in 'flats' pots this year seems to show that the tiny environment is too hard to maintain in my backyard, and most did much better out of them, so I think a in ground or large pot is a better bet.

Gita-
from here to Fred'ck is an hour, so 11 AM? I'm hoping for a Sea oats and Stellas from you. I think I may go for a DL/ tiger lily bed on the driveway, with pansies on its edge overwinter. I recommend you scissor off the vinca runners and cram them in a bucket- tough customers.
Few edits to my Have post. I have found black fountain grass will survive maple roots, it even inhibits the pesky seedheads(pretty but prickly and too selfseeding) I have that for anyone, but it comes with those warnings(invasive, hard to weed out)

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hello All,
I have put this off a whole day as I really did not want to tell anyone as I was very upset..... Kevin has to work next weekend and he was not suppose to have to... He will be working for 7 days in a row 12-16 hours days as they are repairing some machines that are down ... This sucks.. I will not travel that far without him...
I am sorry I will miss you all....
Hugs,
Susan

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Critter, the honeysuckle is doing extremely well. I planted it in the planter next to the pergola and it's starting to climb.

I think everything everyone gave me at the swap is doing well except yesterday I accidentally stepped on the standing cypress plant that Wrightie gave me. :>( There's about an inch of it left above ground so I hope it will survive. It was getting little bloom buds on it. argh

Gita, I'll be sure to find instructions for starting the seeds.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, Susan, I'm so sorry! Well, I might be house-bound myself next weekend. I won't know till the last minute, so maybe we can have our own virtual "date." Heh Heh.

Hart, I think I have some more seeds, so let me know if "the worst" happens.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, no! Susan, I'm so sorry you'll miss the gathering... and I just feel for Kevin -- that's an awful schedule!

Is anyone planning on coming up early and being around on Friday? I know at one point there were mentions of getting together for a bit of nursery-stomping that day.... :-)

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I am so upset... He took the time to check his off days and all.. Now they go and pull this.. .To tell you the truth I think he is as upset as I am.. Susan, I'll just have to twist Jim's arm the next time we're headed down to Winston-Salem, see if I can't get him to schedule a little detour... We've had Jim's work schedule mess up our plans with sudden "crisis" situations, so I understand your frustration. *big hugs* to both of you!
