I created a feature this morning that allows you to create and manage your own groups. To access it, click on "My Info" above, then click on "Manage your friends and groups."
From there you can create and manage groups of members. You can have a group called "Friends", for example, and inside that group place the other members who you want to.
What's the purpose of this?
In the near future, we will have some new preference options, specifically centered around location. You will be able to continue showing your location, or hide your physical location by saying "Only show it to members of my Friends group" for example.
Also, the Diaries area will be enhanced so that you can mark categories as viewable only by your friends.
And so forth...

Feature: friends and groups
I like it!! Will we also be able to post a picture on our homepage and have it viewable to friends only? I'd be more likely to put a face to my name if I could choose who sees it.
Have you ever considered a feature that would allow us to share our diaries with non DG members - i.e., emailing them an invitation to view it? I just started using my diary recently, but I plan to use it much more in the months/years to come. When people ask to see pictures of my garden or pond, it would be wonderful if I could just send them an invitation to my diary! (You could even add a plug for DG in case the viewer is interested in joining).
Thanks for all you do!
Edited to add: You can disregard my question above. I just emailed the link to my diary and the recipient was able to view it without a problem. I guess I thought member diaries were only accessible to other subscribers.

I like the new feature--thanks Dave!
Thanks for making it easy to find our friends Dave, I was straining my brain trying to remember their screen names and as soon as I typed in the first few letters it accessed my d-mail and provided the names that matched! Very easy to use. :~)
Can you add a way for us to click on the name of a person and get the option to add to my groups?
Dave will this be site specific so if I want to allow all on DG but not on Gardens.com for example? I think it's a great feature but just checking it out.
Amazing! Totally cool....:-)
Thanks dave!
MsC
I second MitchF's request. That would be really nice. It's usually when I see their name that I want to add them. I keep meaning to go back and do it manually but then I get sidetracked and forget.
Thanks,
Stephanie
What a fantastic feature - one I'll no doubt use a lot. Thanks Dave!

Dave, Great idea and thanks for implementing it. As a side note, something I have often wanted and maybe you can make the groups feature work for is, I would like the ability to d-mail groups of folks. Thanks for considering this request and a big thank you for all you do.
Mary
the ability to d-mail groups of folks.
I've actually considered this and I see it as certainly do-able. It will require some significant reworking on the dmail system to make it work, but it's actually on my wishlist.
Can you add a way for us to click on the name of a person and get the option to add to my groups?
I'll add that today.
Dave will this be site specific so if I want to allow all on DG but not on Gardens.com for example?
My thought was that if you wanted to hide your location, you'd want it hidden everywhere...
dave
Dave,Have you given any thought to adding a private notes area for the groups and friends. For example say I create a group from a thread that is daily running, and I have everyone listed that is part of it,And I want to add a private note to myself,For example
I add georgiagarden3 to the group and I then add a special note like Name-Pheadra
Address-, collects -Coleus.
Just a thought Thanks,Pheadra
Dave
This is great!
Am wondering since you'll be looking at Dmails what the possibility is of having an edit field? I know you explained we could not delete., but if the 2 parties agree that certain information is no longer relative ... could it be possible to have an edit feature like in a thread so I could edit out info?
Sorry to be such a dim bulb today, but why would I want to "hide" my physical location from all but a selected group of "friends"? I usually have a pretty good imagination - but can't come up with any scenarios that cover it.
A lot of people are really concerned about privacy/security on the internet. Some people are uncomfortable with the idea that anyone could come along and see where you live. You've got some level of protection in the subscribers only forums, but in the open forums anyone can come along and see your information. Some people are OK with that but others it makes them uncomfortable.
here's just one reason...because not everyone who can see where you are~ is as nice as you are...thieves looking for anything you have they don't....
Thanks CA and TX. Usually I'm the one taking the heat in our house for cutting out every mention of our name and/or address on everything that gets thrown our or recycled and shredding it. DG is such a "family" that my defensive genes went to sleep.
Some of us live in towns so small it wouldn't be hard to track a location from information in posts, photos, etc. I go back and forth about how broad I want my location to be.
I posted a message on the pet forum today about a lady who had 6 parrots stolen while she was gone for a couple of hours in the evening. Someone knew something. Sometimes we say things in innocence that can be used against us by not so nice people.
Greenatheart - I am the master shredder in our house, too!

You know some of us are on here every day like just visiting with friends & family...we chat, laugh & even cry with each other...that's what you can see, the posts...what you don't see are the folks who never post , they just lurk, looking for a way to fulfill the nastier side of human beings...
While several have mentioned if it's on the internet then it's not really private...but there's no need in just giving info out or making it really easy to find.
I recently saw an innocent post for "help" and a nice DG person who was trying to "help"...they posted the info for the person with a link to a persons information that was posted in the Addy exchange... so much for "private listing". Neither of them intended any harm...but if it was my info I wouldn't want it posted in an open forum like that...so you see even when there are things in place to protect us, there are ways around keeping it private...
You can now add a member to your groups by just clicking on their name. Inside the "Actions" box is the option to add them to your group(s).
dave
Works great. Thanks.
I second the option mentioned by georgiagarden of a text box where we can save a few comments about each of our friends that only we see (their name and address if they've given it to us, for example)
Dave, with the addition of being able to click on a name and have the option of adding them to our groups, did the little window go away that said how long a member has been here when you hover your mouse over their name?
Yaa, it's gone......I liked it.....and I tried to click a member and couldn't see where it says to add them to friends...?
I just did the same thing.......I'm lost. ;o)
Thanks, Dave Sounds good.~~~` Russ
Click on the members name, then click on the blue highlighted "Visit (member's name) member page for much more" and the option is in the large "Action" box, last option in the list. Dave's is playing around with the site today :-)
It wasn't there just a few minutes ago though. :o)
I think he just put it there. This friends thing is a pretty neat feature! :)
Still can't find the add to friends thing...but the little popup with members info is cool....
It's at the bottom of the Action box on the members home page. but you can also add friends through the My Info tab at the top of the Dave's Garden home page (next to Mail).
Nope, it ain't there.......even cleaned my glasses and looked again :))
Dave
Unless I'm missing something ...
When I click on MGH's name to add her to my list ... only my new group comes up and not the option to add to my "friends" list. Am I just not seeing it? I'm only seeing the one I created. I was trying to put her in my "friends" ... not in the new one. :-)
Thanks!
Three, you have one underneath the part in the action box about leaving feedback or reading feedback. :) This is on the member page, not the pop up when you click on a highlighted name..
I ain't seeing it...when I go to your member page i see the reading or leaving feedback part, but that's it......sigh.......my puter doesn't want me to have any friends!!!!
I don't see it either--either Dave's playing around with things right now, or the only other thing I can think of is that I hadn't put any people on my list of friends yet, maybe you have to have a list already existing before that link will show up?
Well, I can see it on both of your homepages... :) Dave is tweaking things, so....
I have figured out why I couldn't see the link. If all else fails, "read the instructions". SO;
"To access it, click on "My Info" above, then click on "Manage your friends and groups."
From there you can create and manage groups of members. You can have a group called "Friends", for example, and inside that group place the other members who you want to."
You have to set up a group before you can add anyone! I think I need personal tutoring or a DG coach or maybe just a nap!
Did not help. Guess I'll try the nap!
Always a wise choice, Grams. I'll join ya....
Oh Moby, don't be mopey.. :)
