Oh ya, my mom always said a peck of dirt, the stuff you remember from childhood and pass along yourself. One hundred years from now , what do you think they will say? I do like my new gloves. :)
Do you or don't you??
Wow. That is inflation! from a pound to a peck, now a bushel. Soon a square yard??
Hey - welcome back Dave! How was vacation?
Great! Good weather, some beautiful spots, kids didn't kill each other. Clams and lobster.
Funny names for kids.
We're into crustations. We also have twins named crabs.
Welcome back Dave. Didn't know you were gone, but don't take that personally. It comes from raising a grandson at 58 - if you didn't loose your mind the first time around, it'll happen with the next generation. He is a wonderful child but 58 is too old to be going through this again and his parents can't seem to handle the responsibility of parenthood so he spends the majority of his time with me. He is finally walking on his own - he is 16 1/2 months old. Eleanor
Here he is with his most favorite person in the world - his Auntie Jenn. I think I've mentioned it before that she comes over after work to help me out with him. He actually cries when she she leaves and doesn't do that for his own parents. Eleanor
I'm through venting about his parents - Mom is away for a week on a business trip and Dad gets too stressed out watching him *%#@*(^. There I've said it!!!!!
Glad you got that off your chest, Eleanor. I can't imagine raising my kid's kids - once was enough for me
Big points for you Eleanor. I don't think I could deal with a little one for a long stretch of time now, don't mind a few hours here and there, but giving them back at the end is a happy feeling. Someone needs to have an "excuse me your the grown-ups now" talk with those parents. On the plus side, he is a sweetie-pie!
My admiration for you Eleanor, thinkimg you are being taken advantage of, I would not do it, four of them was enough from the oldest to the youngest for 12 years. I did baby sit in a pinch, I was working at Brown U. for one thing.
Yes, I am being taken advantage of but my biggest concern is for my grandson and that he recieve the best possible care. I've given them the talk but they are still very immature at 27 and 30. I feel in the long run they will be the losers as they are missing out on a wonderful relationship with their son. Eleanor
Eleanor, my mom did that too.... and now I am in a way doing it.... I have my 2 nephews in the house (their mothers are here too!!!!) they can go anytime they want!!!!! the kids are cute!!!! and I get to teach them to love ice cream, gardening and the Boston Red sox....
no question that is their loss!!!
Eleanor, I don't take it personally.
Hang in there.
Eleanor, maybe you should call "Super Nanny"
Colin is blessed to have you Eleanor. Have to say though, that I hope I don't have to do the same!
Thanks for the support guys. I hope none of you have to take raise your grandchildren. I do know a grandmother who is in a horrible situation - she is raising (and has custody) of her daughter's 5 children. The daughter has some mental issues and the children are really messed up. I don't want Colin to end up like that. At least "when" he is with his parents they ......? I was going to say take good care of him but I really can't say that they do and I guess that is the reason I am willing to take care of him above and beyond regular babysiting. Eleanor
Many are worse of then most of us, but I think it is harder for paernts to realize their children are not capable of taken care of their own children (I do wonder why they have any)rather then the difficult job taken care of the grandchildren at an much older age.
My 27 year-old daughter is sooo enthused about getting a puppy. She and her fiance are moving to Victoria - and DH and I heartily approve of parental practice on the puppy first.
I totally agree about getting a puppy first!!!!
We became parents of cats first.
Cats are easy, they train you. A puppy is a good idea, you have to deal with them no matter what, a good lesson to learn before you have kids. :)
Including valuable experience at scooping poop and regular bathing.
Exactly, Victor. Our dog was 10 yrs old before we decided to have kids.
I know this thread is about gloves but I have to show you Colin's new shoes that I bought him today. Size 6 - going to start calling him Big Foot. He was so excited to be wearing big boy shoes. Sorry I couldn't get the whole body in the pic - he just wouldn't stay still so I aimed for the feet only. Eleanor
That's fine - gloves for his feet! I'm sure he spends lots of time in the garden with you.
Ah . . . shoe size. My DD will be turning 20 this year. She wears a child's size 3. The only dress shoes she can buy are pink barbie shoes. Mostly, she wears boys shoes. I think, once in her life, she would like to wear heels. . . but there is an additional problem - VERY high instep.
Any idea where a person might find shoes that (1) might fit her and (2) might actually be attractive (I mean, other than custom-made shoes)?
Have you tried zappos.com?
someone at the college said the same thing today - I am definitely going to check this out. Thanks flowerjen. :-)
No problem.
Just a quick update. Been using my new pair of Bionic Elite for a while now. I have used them for all garden tasks and so far, so good. I am paying close attention to the reinforced fingertips and so far they show no signs of wear.
I don't wear gloves but should....was weeding and weeded a snake yesterday!!
Auntie T who is 84 now taught me about the soap under the nails. It works pretty good if you can stand the feeling.
I can't. I tried it. But the gloves help with poison ivy, nettles, bugs and of course, snakes.
Eeeek! Celeste, I would've jumped out of my skin.
If I garden without gloves, my hands get unbearably dry and itchy. I already have scratched them raw in a few places. Victor, I'm gonna try the Bionic gloves. Can you bend metal while wearing them?
I can bend space and time with them.
Ah - totally coool! Now can you bend time back to 1967 - I like a repeat now that I finally figured some stuff out :-) (like investing in google, bri-ex, and education)
Even better!!!!
Just saw this thread. I DON'T, unless I have gotten a manicure, for some odd reason. BUT, neither does DH, and he first started with a reaction to lantana, which I read in PF can be an irritant. THEN, he started reacting to everything with smells, basil, monarda, etc., and now he breaks out when he cuts the grass. I wear nurse-type gloves, but I have to find something manly and comfy for him or it will be a waste of $$$$$.
x, C
(whenever Victor starts a thread, you know it's gonna be good.)
Thanks Carrie. I have been happy with Bionic and they have a replacement guarantee - I think for up to a year.
