Do you or don't you??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thank you Daisey. Don't hesitate to let us know if you feel we are crossing it.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Especially if it's Victor.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Hey, I don't even have one degree. Does that make me (how much?) better than average?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, it makes you at least on par with average, Harper. Which (according to the logic I applied in another thread) makes you at least a Shasta Daisy - and probably something much grander, I, alas, have three degrees, so apparently my plant equivalent is dirty ditch scum. :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ditch scum serves a purpose.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah - makes the other plants look terrific!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I thought Average was one degree. I've gotta be better than average!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey - you could be right, Harper - you could be an exquisite, highly scented, and even medically useful tea rose!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Now that's more like it! :)

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

I wear gloves. The ones I wear are knit with rubber coating the palms and finger tips. They are stretchy knit so they aren't the bulky kind. I type all day on the pc and I worry about dirty nails....besides the way the dirt feels under my nails bugs me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Do those knit ones last long?

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

Lasted me this summer so far. This is my first summer really gardening. Was an apartment dweller before that.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I use dirty finger nails as an excuse to soak in the tub and read :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not good with wet soil I would imagine, dp.

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

Seems to be okay even with wet soil. Question, do you know why some names are green and some are blue?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Names of what??

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

user names to the left of the thread

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

blue- bloods vs. green thumbs?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I forgot what it means. Probably similar to the forum and thread colors - read vs. unread or something. I'm sure it's explained somewhere.

Saco, ME

Hey all -

I got a good one for ya. I have to let you know that I read somewhere about a trick someone used that was useful. Of course I have not tried it yet but I think I am going to tomorrow because all of you brought up this long-winded subject.

This person was an avid gardener that did not like to use gloves. Her nails were relatively short. Before she went outside to garden, she took a bar of Ivory soap and dug all of her fingernails in it so that the soap got kind of caked under her nails. Then she went out and gardened her little heart out and when she came in and washed up, her fingernails were clean. Sounds like a good experiment. I will try tomorrow and let you guys know. Doesn't that sound cool?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I've heard that. Kind of weird to me. If you don't like the feeling of dirt under your nails, why would you like the feeling of dry soap under there??

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Victor - I don't think it's about the feeling. I think it's about how it looks!! Would you want someone with dirt under their fingernails preparing your dinner?? LOL My hands and fingernails get really dirty and then I scrub them with a vegetable brush until they are as clean as they'll ever be after playing in the dirt!! Now if you already have soap under your fingernails, you don't need to add soap to the brush!! My fingernails are so short I don't think I could get much soap under them anyway so I will probably stay dirty. I think I just wrote a whole paragraph and said nothing!! LOL Eleanor

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No I wouldn't want dirty nails and food going together. But remember the title of the thread - I do!! (Ooh, those words just caused a flashback. I'm okay now.)

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

dp, the green names are people you've clicked on to see their member page, the blue ones, you haven't clicked on, at least not recently.

About gloves, I like the Nitrile gloves, but I don't use them that often because they either make me sweat or (mostly) I forget to put them on. I can't stand having dirty nails, so I keep them as short as possible. My hands are delicate (notice my eyelashes fluttering), so for heavy-duty stuff, I put leather gloves on.

Harper

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I use a nail brush to get the dirt out. M ixing a batch of ground beef for meatloaf or meatballs gets the dirt out real good too....hee hee

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Finally opened my new Bionic gloves - the Elite model with the reinforced fingertips and I liked the feel very much. The tips are still soft enough to have feeling. I'll see how they stand up to Fall planting.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

All my nitrile gloves are wearing out... I was eyeballing the Bionic gloves today. I tried going without gloves for a while. My hands get dry and itchy. I like gloves better.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Mostly I don't like wearing gloves. I have bought gloves over the years and for some odd reason I always seem to lose one of them! So I have a few 'singles' around but they are very neglected!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I have a new pair of nitrile gloves, Gardener's Choice is the brand. I like them better than any other ones i have tried, mostly because the women's small size actually fits. No minor thing as I have very small hands and getting good gloves that fit is a chore. Also they where 25% off. Should have got a few pairs.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What thickness, ngam?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

They are thin enough to get a decent feel of things. Nylon knit on top and the nitrile on the palm and finger tips. Good when its muddy. How durable they will be remains to be seen but so far so good. I'm not a big fan of gloves usually but these I find myself looking for when I'm going to weed or plant.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Victor, how are the Bionic gloves? Can they stop a speeding bullet?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like them a lot, as I've said. Haven't tried the bullet trick yet.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Aw, give it a go! What, are ya scared?

Gloves or no gloves? The average person eats a pound of dirt a year. I heard this on the news like 3 years ago. So if the average person eats a pound a year what do gardeners eat for dirt?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

My husband says you have to eat a bushel of dirt before you die. Don't know where he got that saying from.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Michaela, I've heard that 'bushel of dirt' thing. I think it's been around for a long time. Should we all sit down and eat our bushel today and get it over with?

Assonet, MA(Zone 6b)

I think that's a party I'll skip. I can remember my Mom quoting her Mom on "a bushel of dirt", so that is indeed an OLDIE. :)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

don't you think that if we eat all our dirt at once, we die - maybe if we take our time we will live longer :-)

Assonet, MA(Zone 6b)

certainly can see the logic, but dwelling on this is certainly twisted. :))
