I think I'm going to give up on Gardening.........

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Weather broke here this am with lovely rain and a drop to 11 degress - heavenly. Last nite beautiful for sleeping. Maybe the first time this month. Today the 20th anniversary of our tornado and everyone is glad that the heat spell broke gently.

New boulevard planting is looking good with the perennials bought on the Ginny/Anne/Una nursery tour a couple of weeks ago. Will post pics as soon as i add a few more annuals.

Hey Lynn how did you find enough time to play. I am sorry to hear about your heat wave. I guess SE Alaska IS the best place to buy garden property. I would think Edmonton would have cool nights? We have cooled also and the nights are in the 40s F. Karen and I are busy planting the 70 + perenials I bought in Seattle on clearance last week. Actually we are only laying them into the shaded woodland so we don't have to water the newbies so much.
Hey has anyone up in the north planted this one? It is new and comes from New Zealand. -25F zone 4.

It is kind of neat. Varigated upper maple like leaf with a purple underside.

It is actually cold out today! Sure feels nice. Apparently only a day or two like this and then up over 30 again. Big 4 day dog show this weekend - everything - confirmation, obedience, agility, rally etc - really hot weather is no fun! I just have to be there 2 days for 4 hours to man a booth. Glad my dogs are not enteed!

BTW I don't know where others' weather stations are located but ours is about 5 miles out of town on top of the plains (if there is any breeze it's more bearable out there plus in town the thermometers (north side and in the shade) are recording temps up to 5 degrees Celcius higher (since we are in a valley surrounded by pavement and cement).

Looking forward to seeing pics of your boulevard Lynn. :)

While on desk tonight Lynn I saw an article about the miracle baby that survived the Edmonton tornado....it gave me goosebumps and I'm so glad she and the police officer were able to get together: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/story/2007/07/31/tornado-ed.html

The heat wave broke gently here as well....we received strong cool winds from the north but nothing else. :D

I'll be keeping an eye open for your new bush Steve. :)

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

Pam, it's been a warm week here and we are in for 35 degrees tomorrow. Shan't complain though, we've had a good summer so far.

Steve, I wish the nurseries around here would be brave and bring in some unusual trees and shrubs. If I want anything different I have to go down to southern Ontario or into Quebec.

This one will probably make it. I am going to buy one when I go back to seattle in Sept. Too hot now to plant anything. The price was right and only 2gallon pots. Now where to plant it? LOL
Hey have you tried Parrotia Persica 'Vanessa' one of the most beautiful trees year round. Great bark, Fall color is unmatched Red borders green centers and yellow inbetween, Spring is pictured nice new red growth and waxy green old growth. Good to -25F.

Nope.....will have plant them in protected areas (some winters here still get mighty cold). I really like the look of that one Steve! :)

Currently enjoying the beautiful coolness that the Jet Stream brought in (the wind knocked over a couple tomato plants but that was a small price to pay.....might even need a blanket on the bed tonight). :^))))))

Am also able to make my bread dough wrapped with beet greens and cooked beets (it's actually cool enough to risk heating up the oven tonight). :) Ü :)

We have started to burn. Forest fires everywhere. The valley is choked with smoke. Eyes burn, nose on fire, and coughing. I can't wait until I leave to go to Alaska on Sunday AM. Working up in Juneau for 3 weeks. Lots of rain and walks in the green forests. Ahhhhhhhh. Take care Pam.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

You too Steve! I was wondering how your forests were doing.....I know the ones in Inland BCare keeping the fire fighters there pretty busy. Oh well forests really aren't necessary (oxygen is easily found) *cough, cough*

....... praying here something changes soon.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Needed a blanket in Winnipeg last night. So dark in the AMs now. Used to get out into garden around 0500 to do SOMETHING before it was too hot to work. Here it is almost 0600 and not light enought yet to work in garden. Could it be W_ _ _ _ _ beginning to close in.

Watching CNN. How horrible- the MSP bridge. After the same sort of thing happened in Quebec (a lump of cement fell off) all overpasses/bridges in Canada were checked. We have a RR overpass here in Manitoba closed, causing long slow detour on our E/W Trans-CanadaWill take over a year to fix apparently. So currently masses of trucks (18 wheelers) go very slowly through Portage every day.

I wonder if the "Mothman" showed up before this. You would have to see the movie "Mothman profesies". A partially true story of the bridge collapse over the Ohio river in Dec of 74. Kind of scary.

Well 8 pumpkins (planted June 21) have taken so far, 2 birdhouse gourds are close to picking, there are a carload of beefsteak sized maters close to turning, I've picked 12 red bell peppers........obviously the veggie patch enjoyed the humidity a whole lot more than the people here did. We received our first good rain of the season yesterday (guessing here that is was an inch that fell over 7 hours.......not like the 1/2 inch that came with the hail and fell in 10 minutes). The rain came too late to improve our grain crops but at least they won't deteriorate any further and it's unreal how many combines are already out in the fields (early crops that ripened too fast).

The film company dropped off another cheque (payment for going over what they originally said). They also said that the movie was originally filmed for television release but after looking at it they will be releasing it to the big screen (saying it is a Walt Disney like production....family rated and looking pretty good). They say they will be asking for our garage about every 5 or so years (it has a lot of character and looks really good on film). They also warned us there is a good chance they will be knocking on our door next summer asking if they can film inside our house.

Our garage is going to be kept sooo neat. :D

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

We have the cage and the door (DH kidded the location manager we'd be selling them on ebay so the movie better do really well)....Steve said he didn't hear that. ;)

Good news Pam. Our pumpkins are still really tiny. Think we started them too late. Zukes zuking along well. Have grated some and frozen so I can make my fave zuke choc. cake as soon as I hit less than 148 lbs. That will be my treat!!!!!

Major 2 or 3 hour wait at border crossing yesterday. Glad I wasn't there.....

Weather is perfect today. Yesterday, overcast and not too hot all day, plus enough wind to keep off stray mozzies. Had a great gardening day. Picking beans, zukes, tomatoes, basil, drying lovage & parsley for winter, planting iris. Yum.

My pumpkins aren't growing great guns yet either Ginny (lots of baby females have taken though) .....so we should have some pretty nice ones before frost comes. Ü

Yep that Zucchini cake does sound pretty good to me too the Zucchino Rampicante : http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/410641/ I'm growing this year ( I see Shoe has it entered as Climbing Zucchini,Tromboncino, Trombocino, Zucchetta Rampicante, Italian Trombone Squash 'Tromba d'Albenga') is supposed to be similar to zucchini but with a more nutty taste to it. I've been told you can cook it like zucchini as well as grate it for our fave chocolate cake recipe. :D

Sounds like you had a wonderful day.........I actually have 2 days off starting tomorrow so am looking forward to doing a few more chores at the patch (and in my garden too :).

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

cool enough here this am that the blanket went on halfway thru the night and we have had some good rains over the past week or so

finished the sunroom renos finally Ginny and for once a projected started has exceeded my expectations of it

we had dinner out there sunday and monday and our breakfasts this week and i kept thinking how much we had missed that space this summer - oh well we still have 3+ months to use it.
