They must really love this location.......shooting is going to continue for another 7 days here (our garage/neighbour's house). :S They are taking 4 days off though before continuing. Ana has never been this far north before so she is going to check out Cypress Hills, SK http://www.cypresshills.com/cypresshillssask.html?PHPSESSID=3959e45b4f71dd4b0bae400936bc4da3 for her long weekend.

Hey that is really cool to see..I know it is interesting but I bet you will bw happy to return to your quiet life and street.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Yep re quiet street :) Since we didn't advertize that we wanted this (not sure if the neighbours did) we really weren't mentally prepared for the kind of commitment this takes. If we do agree to inside the house next year at least we would be put up elsewhere and I won't be putting a garden in. Even without the hail our yard would be damaged since you can't water the beds and lawns that well when their electrical equipment is being stored out there (at least they keep shifting it now since I told them the grass will die when it's covered in this heat). So now the yard has that hail tattered/drought dying look to it (thankfully grass and perennials go dormant in a drought ;).

It's been pretty amazing all right....the co-ordination that has to be done makes me really respect the location manager's and his assistant's job. They really have to get to know the neighbourhood really well, ie those with medical problems have to have a parking spot left open. As well they have to deal with any problems that arise and there are soooo many!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Carry on Pam. What has happened since July 13.... and dare we ask about your veggie garden???? Any time to go work in it?

Just back from ROASTING in Edmonton. Neat lilies though.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Good morning,

Just catching up on what I missed when I was away. I'm so sorry about the hail damage. I think I'd be tempted to give up gardening too.

Quite the excitement with the movie making. I know they did one a few blocks from me last winter. Lots of vehicles and semi's, but you've documented it well. I hope things are quiet now.

Ann

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Well Inanda there is a Semi parked beside our garage again.....with our garage contents in it. :D Next weekend they are sending a couple of men to empty it and help DH organize it. :^))))

Veggie garden (on South Hill) is doing very well plants are 5 + feet now with good fruit set. I can't say the same for the ones in my backyard ..... they've run outta time to recover, catch up, and fruit.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to Edmonton........aren't the temps here just wonderful?????? :( I'm sure we are around 90% humidity and are supposed to hit 37 degrees Celcius today (feels like will be well into the 40's). :'( We've had more hail and more severe weather warnings then I can remember this summer.

Thanks Ann. :) We've accepted the damage here (and I did hit a couple of 60 % off sales to fill in a few bare pots) but I'll really be in a funk if the south hill garden is hit. BTW our grass will take a year to recover from the film crew.

Nice to see it........really nice :^)))))) to see them winding down (pics taken on last day of shooting here). They pulled out fast and moved down to the high school my kids went too. Today they blocked off Main Street and are shooting there.

Finally caught the child actor (side shot)........... they are very protective of his image:

We took a break from watching the activities here and returned DD to Alberta but, on the way, we took a detour at the Great Sandhills, SK. This sand feels somewhere between velvet and silk (it really has to be experienced barefoot and between your toes :).

A good area to wear cowboy boots (rattlesnakes there) if you walk on the plains between the dunes.......we weren't wearing any but did find a place we could get a pair if need be. ;)

Pond prior to hail

Thumbnail by Lilypon
Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

(one drop dead gorgeous hot pink lily bloomed at the time they were shooting and of course I didn't have the camera then and couldn't get back to it due to the filming). It looked kinda funny though without any pads around it.

Pond now with new growth..........pic overexposed but it's HOT, HUMID and BRIGHT out there now. DH said it's beyond gross (re humidity) and a fellow from Toronto said it's worse here then there. My cousin, from Toronto, will be here tomorrow and I said she'll feel like she was back at home (it sure isn't the normal somewhat hot, dry summer here that she grew up knowing).

Wunderground is more up to date with humdity reading:

Moose Jaw
Today
Sunny Humidity: 76%

Weathernetwork however has the current temperature correct:

35°C
A few clouds
Feels Like 41
Wind S 26km/h

(we will be getting a lot warmer before this day is done)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Still don't have A/C in the house but this summer may be the breaking point (started off cool but sure has changed :( ).....working 6 day per week and not being able to sleep takes one to the brink of no return.

Look out for this mess heading your way Manitoba.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I forgot........we get to keep some of the set decorations they made (one being the really large cage). Wonderful freebies for Hallowe'en. :)~

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

What a memory you have to keep, Pam! The mess has already gotten here. Wowzers.....it's hot here!

yep :(((

Just came back from watering SH patch.......peppers are loving the heat (I've never had such healthy big loaded plants as this year) BTW they are filling a 3 foot across space.

Biggest excitement was finding a relatively new mater variety with some large tomatoes on it.

I'd like to introduce, a very blury ;), mater by the name of Red Barn

Production peeps are wishing they were filming in the arctic now.....(someone should really tell them black isn't the colour to hide under on a HOT day ;).

Donna (or echoes or Inanda) what's the "Feels like" supposed to be at your location today?

Just heard that we are to hit 35C but with the humidity we will be at 47C or 116.6 F (that's it I'm moving). :(((((((((((

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Temp 34C
Humidity 69
Humidex 31 and rising
Mozzie count in traps not given. No city spraying last night.

Lots of garden watering -in the shade.

Weather report says "Muggy for Muggles". Wonder how long it will be before Harry Potter words are included in dictionaries.

inanda busily planting iris.

Edited to add:

We are supposed to hit 36C today, a record. I'm sleeping outside these days(nights), on deck, avec Off against the mozzies.

When in Edmonton I boiled, with sweat running into my eyes far too often. Really felt like a little old lady, mopping my face with kleenex so often.

Garden content. Went to NALS convention (north american lily society). The lily fields were amazing. Row after row of Martagons. Had never seen so many in one place.

Lilypon, you must be so HAPPY that film crew has finally left your garden. Hope that life can return to normal now for you.

Just checked again and the on-line forecast is matching what the radio/T.V. is saying ....... we are now looking at +38C (I'm afraid what the feels like will end up being). Staff are praying the library's system won't give up like it has other years. Our previous heat/humidity record was 43C back in 2002. It really doesn't matter that the film crew are gone now cause other than turning a hose on I'm not doing a darn thing out there (my pots that were moved to the front, for safe keeping, can just sit there).

Last night DH was busy building shelves for the garage (since it's still empty) and he came in soaking wet (man it's humid out there). Our food now consists of raw veggies and cold meat/cheese cause there is no way we are turning any heat source on.

Glad you enjoyed your NALS Convention (and Lynn's hospitality :).

Supposed to rain tomorrow (I'm also terrified of what any storm will bring with the humidex where it is now).

Hi Pam.....

Thumbnail by echoes
Drumheller, Canada(Zone 3b)

Hey girl I now what you men...We had that humidity for almost a week and it is brutal..We are in our 15th day of plus 30 and I am almost wiped out. Today they are talking 39 for the valley. There is no letup in site for us for the next week to 10 days..

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOLOLOLOLOL echoes (even that took too much effort) ;(

Kinnika my sympathies to you.....while it is ugly/brutal across a lot of the prairies your valley, esp with it's white walls, really seems to magnify and trap the heat. 2002 was the last time we went to Dinosaur Provincial Park and it makes me ill remembering how hot it was there ( we packed up our trailer as soon as it became light and hightailed off to Cypress HIlls......gotta love those highlands).

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Kinnika do you have A/C in your house?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Library A/C just went down........if they can't get it up they'll have to order another one from Montreal. (last year it took 2 weeks for it to arrive).

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Had an outdoor dog agility trial all weekend - fortunately for me I had not entered my dogs so was only out half days to volunteer . The dogs and humans had shade to sit in except when running or walking the course. Sure felt sorry for the judge who had to stand out in the sun two very long and hot days.

The high humidity here last week sure didnt help much and I have no idea what the temps have been in town - somewhere around 30 but way to hot as far as I am concerned! Lots of shade in the back yard if the dogs want to be out ( and they do!)and the main floor of the house stays reasonable but upstairs my bedroom is always warm - luckily in Calgary it almost always cools down at night. I have taken to staying in during the day and gardening in the evening!

Hope it cools off the coming weekend - it is the weekend to view the winning garden competition gardens . I am touring on Saturday ( in an A/C bus - I hope) and gate sitting all Sunday - better be some shade wherever they send me!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

50C 122F (heat/humidity combined) was what the Regina/Moose Jaw area hit today .

Our crops, without snow this year (Palliser's Triangle) and with the minimal rainfall we received so far are going to fry (never mind the people.....warnings were given to check often on Seniors in your area).

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Our local NGO has set up a bus to take seniors without AC to our central library for the day. This will be a daily effort till weather calms down. We keep thinking about the elderlies who died in the French heatwave a few years ago.

A social held here for Elie tornado victims to cover expenses not covered by insurance. Many volunteers have been walking the fields to pick up things that must be cleared before fields can be harvested.

inanda

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Still not a cloud in sight and the humidity here is at 88% (& at 8:00 we were 82 F) They are promising us a short term cold front (minimal rain) will move in late this afternoon (great tornado birthing weather). I just checked the Temperature map and the worst of the heat/humidity will be over Manitoba by the end of today. My sympathies to you folks (I'm just about going out of my mind here).

Moose Jaw public library wouldn't be a safe place.....A/C keeps going down. DS works for Tourism Moose Jaw and the main floor has been down for 3 days (the upstairs one has been kept going). However he also gives tours on the Trolley (no A/C on it so temps were the same as outside..... ie 50C). He comes home with a purple face and soaking wet (with the personality of a grizzly bear)

Remember we never used to have humidity so A/C's here were designed for a dryer climate.

Picture taken before the Trolley entered the local parade (DS is wearing the long sleeved white shirt/standing up near the front)..

Today's screensaver. Hope you don't have to go to work Pam.

Thumbnail by echoes
Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

(((((((echoes))))))) you're a sweetheart!!!! BTW we are thinking alike.....last night we dug through our video collection and pulled out every movie that had LOTS of SNOW featured in it. I told DH I wished the T.V. had an option to click on so that we could feel the temperatures we were drooling over on the screen.

I start at one and work till 9:15 tonight. Told the boss if it stayed down I was outta there and could be found resting in one of the freezers at Safeway.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

I'm jumping in and out of my enamelled swimming pool (aka bath) today. Full of cold water. Think I might just stay there for a few hours, with wine and a book.

It is really fearful here.

inanda

Drumheller, Canada(Zone 3b)

Hi there:
No we don't have A/C in the house as it makes me sick. We do however have a cool basement which we have been using a lot lately..Today it isn't too bad here, someone told me it was about 25 outside so that is a lot better then the 35-39 we have been getting. They are saying tomorrow will be cool (27) and then we are back into it again.. I want 2 days of winter!!!!!!!! I keep a journal and last year on Aug. 12th we had our furnace on as it was only 5 in the mornings...Only in Alberta hey!!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

on a positive note the next wave of high temps isn't *supposed* to have high humidity with it. Ü :) Ü :) Ü (fingers and toes crossed so hard I've lost sensation ;)

Oh the joys of winter (short memory here) but our summers do make us (or at least some of us) think fondly of them.
