oh... the pictures I found didn't show deep taproots. They showed thin shallow roots.. Now I'm more confused..

Look at the second link above that I posted... bottom right hand corner of the illustration. That root goes down. It doesn't always go straight down but it goes down not so dissimilar from the images you posted here-

Check out Helianthus spp. too. Some species of Helianthus have leaves that are not so dissimilar from Solidago. Most Helianthus have really nasty tap roots and are hard to pull out of the ground by hand. Their roots sometimes go straight down, sometimes not. Either way, don’t let them go to seed either.
