Best Thing/Worse Thing and What did I learn today? Part 7

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Ahhhhhhhhh, gitagal....
many years ago I wrote the last few lines on a card and posted it on my fridge. It was at a time when my mother died unexpectedly while I was talking with her on the phone. I was in a lot of emotional pain for a long time because she lived 200 miles away from me at the time. anyway, I found this "poem", and though it didn't all apply, the lines starting with:
"so you plant your own garden......."
and on to the end.....ended up as my motto for many years, then I forgot about it.
Our electricity went off earlier this week, and for lack of anything else to do in the dark afternoon storm, I cleaned off my fridge. behind some other more recent pictures, I found this poem.
Now what you probably don't know is that my husband died after a very short illness on April 22 of this year....so I particularly enjoyed reading it at this time in my life.
and here it is again tonight, just after I have had a rough day.
How very appropriate that I see it tonight, even though you wrote it for tropicanna......I just wanted to tell you my little story, and to say thank you. I hope your post touches as many people personally as it did me.

OK, sweet friends, if you read the Kay and Sher thread you will get a double dose, because I posted there too....but I have to share this with you anyway. Just skip if you have already seen it......too cute!

Now you know I was really down today, and words from those of you who knew really helped. we have had severe thunderstorms here in the late afternoons, another one today, we need the rain so i can't complain, but along with the lightning and the thunder, the rains are very heavy. tonight I remembered at about 10 to take the garbage out. as I walked through the glass door onto my deck, this is what I saw:

Thumbnail by Sharran
Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

took the garbage out, gently closed the deck door, turned and glanced at the kitchen window......yep, another one

Thumbnail by Sharran
Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

so by now the kitties are having a kitty fit just at the lower part of the door......this is what they saw, but they ran away as I ran to get the camera:

Thumbnail by Sharran
Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

By the time all the flashes and fanfare had died down the little freaky green frogs were gone.......the cats are still wound up and are pacing back and forth across the glass doorway.....daisy stands up and stretches her feet as high as they will go, maybe she thinks they are still up there somewhere.
also by the time I got the photos loaded into my camera, i realized that I was laughing, having a fun time....now doesn't God work in mysterious little ways???? first a poem that I love right outta the blue, and now the frog invasion.
Not as exciting, I know, as a bear in my backyard......but sure did bring me out of that pity hole I found myself in today.
and I had to share it all with you.....you are so sweet and such a caring group, how could I not.
Hugs to you all......

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Shar I love those litle tree frogs. I haven't seen any yet this year. Thanks for sharing. I forgot to say how lovely your back yard is. I can see myself sitting there and enjoying it.

Well Betty I am kind of dense also. But it didn't really sink in until I read your last post about all the accidents how dangerous that drive can be. I knew it was long but when you mentioned how long the jams lasted. I'm sitting here in awe that you do that drive 4-5 days a week! I had a sandhill crane in the back this morning! On my drive to work I saw a blue heron at a pond I drive by. They are so pretty as I am sure your's is.

Tropicana hang in there and do what you need to do when the time is right for you!

liz such good news about your DH.

Worst for today::::: I'm working 8 hours instead of the 6 I thought it was! I need to learn how to read the schedule! LOL

You all have a great day!

thanks for the comments about my back yard and my treefrogs......One of the treefrogs took up housekeeping about a month ago in one of the yucca plants that i keep scattered around in various places. I was trimming th old out of it, and there was this little guy just snoozing in the morning dew....cute as could be, but that was a month or so ago, and last night was the first time I had seen them again, however, I do hear them. BTW, I have a nice comfy glider on the back deck, so if you want to join me for the view, come ahead.
I still want to build some little houses to fit into the flower beds......
You have a good day.
I will be checking in and out as i do laundry and put the finishing sparkle on the house....my boys are coming home tonight!!!! and that means Ethan for the weekend...Yayyyyyyyy.....

Gita - beautiful poem! I'm sutting and pasting it right now to an email and sending it to all my friends! Thanks!

For yesterday:

Best: Helped my neighbor in her yard - weed wacked, pulled weeds, etc. She's a non-gardener and everything she has in her beds is from me bringing over extras. Got down and (really!) dirty pulling up all the vinca vine, daylilies and weeds around her mailbox. We're going to start over and plant something new. Before I knew it, it was 9:15pm and I figured since I couldn't see the weeds anymore, it was probably time to call it a night! I love getting really dirty and seeing the progress!!!

Worst: got a mosquito bite in my belly button! OUCH!

Learned: those suckers (mosquitos) can get you anywhere!!

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

WOW!!!!!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

OHHHHHHHH Betty!! How beautiful! how big is he? In recent years blue herons and igrets have migrated to northern waters, and those that could only be found in the deep south are now nesting around our lake waters here in western KY. we also have pelicans occasionally, but don't think they are nesting yet.
These times, they are a'changin.....as my grandmother used to say.
but that is a lovely piece of art work, I counted every feather. Beautiful job.
I need to get out and find some scraps so I can build some little houses...I am so in the mood to do that.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Can one of you tell me the name of the plant that is blooming red in the heading across the top of the home page of DG......about 3 years ago I bought what I thought were "spikes" to just stick in the middle of some summer pots.....at the end of the season, I dumped the soil out in a corner of the daylily garden which you have seen in my back yard....well, one of the "spikes"came back the next year....and bloomed, and has been back blooming every year since then. I think it is a tropical, because it is unusual to see them bloom around in this area, but what is it called.???...it is all over the back part of my daylily garden now, and I haven't a clue.

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

OK Betty, I want to comission you to pain all my garden art! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! Do you sell at crafts shows - cause you should!!!

Jeannine

Victoria Harbour, ON

Hi there, insurance man just came...did an inspection..so now I have to go into office and get $$$ upgrades...

Sher..the heron is 26" wide and 18" high..I purchase metal rebar for legs..then with long dowels of different sizes I make cattails..so this aft. I'll give him his final coats and off he goes as a decoration...

Jeannine...the amount of the hours you put into these projects, cost of wood and my time for cutting...just not worth it...I usually give so that I consider it a pleasure versus money making...

I enjoy painting birdhouses as well..

So off I go to cut more lawn..usually over 3 hrs. of cutting..I'm officially off duty by 1:00 and then off to town I go...

will check in later..

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

OK, so I have my BEST for today already!!!

So my DH, 2 SILs, 1 BIL & DN are all going to the Indy race here tomorrow. We are HUGE Indy fans and go every year. So a good friend of mine's DH is a golf pro and plays with the NASCAR drivers. She just called and wanted to know if I would be interested in 4 infield passes for today and tomorrow. Ah, YEAH!

These are passes that allows you to drive into the infield, park, cruise the pits and garage and actually watch the race from there if you want. And because we have 6 people, my friend's DH called and got us two more passes!!! So not only are we going to the race, we get prime parking, & get to smooze in the infield. Can I just say that I CANNOT WAIT!!!! I am so excited - can you tell! AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Good Morning Friends,
Wow, so much going on, my mind is racing what I want to say to all.
Gitgal-Thank you for such a wonderful Poem.
I am glad that you posted has great meaning to me.

Shar-Cute little tree frogs! I am so glad they brought a smile to yu and curiosity to the Daisy and Jazz. What little house are you thingkingI I think the DayLillies would look lovely surrounding a Victorian, or something tallish, or even a Log house...oh oh now my village is growing too.
How exciting, I know you will have a fun weekend with Ethan.

Betty, Oh my goodness the Heron is so real looking. No one would ever figure it started out as wood. Outstanding! Yay, Glad you are having such a good weekend start.

GG-Oh gosh! how very exciting for you. Have an absolute blast.
So sweet of you to help your neighbor with her weeds. It feels good, and ever so satisfactory in the end results.

Araness, aw...I am sure you'll miss the handsome little Zorrow. Good thing you got some photos to remind you of his visit.

... have had way to much caffine this morning, running like mad to get things done. We are going to the Cottage this weeknd. Very exciting my Brother is coming too. Haven't seen him since Oct, so now I can "beat" him up in person for getting hurt.LOL My idea of "beating" is hugging him so hard he'll be gasping for air. Really tho, I just want to see that his hand is healing well, and boy of boy he is in for a treat while I Tell him all about my new friends. If you think I Blab alot you should see how I am with my family. ROTFL...
Well, I have to finish some stuff up before leaving. I know I missed commenting on some of the posts, Please know you are all with me throught the days. I pray for your Happiness and health and I smile on the good times and cry on the sad. Either way wrapping my arms around each and every one.

Worst-Not being able to chat with you all weekend
Best-Wishing you all a happy and safe weekend, can't wait to get back and catch up.

Learned-You are all lovely people.
so glad Shar and Tropicanna found comfort with friends Betty and Darius.

A victorian would be great with the daylilies, just tall enough to not get lost among them.....with maybe a carriage house behind it......hmmmm.

have fun at the cabin.....

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I just c/p this the other day from a DG Post. This was posted by "Dinu" from India. He is quite an active poster, especially on the Photography Forum. So, Here's another good one for you all.

Here are some nice lines worth reading....

**
Don't let someone become a priority in your life,
when you are just an option in their life...
Relationships work best when they are balanced.

**
Never explain yourself to anyone.
Because the person who likes you doesn't need it.
and the person who dislikes you won't believe it.

**
When you keep saying you are busy,
then you are never free.
**
When you keep saying you have no time,
then you will never have time.
**
When you keep saying that you will do it tomorrow,
then your tomorrow will never come.

**
We make them cry who care for us.
We cry for those who never care for us.
And we care for those who will never cry for us.

**
This is the truth of life. It's strange but true.
Once you realize this, it's never too late to change.

**
Don't make promises when you are in joy.
Don't reply when you are sad.
Don't make decisions when you are angry.
Think twice... act wise.

**
Time is like a river.
You cannot touch the same water twice,
because the flow that has passed will never pass again.
Enjoy every moment of life....

LOVE THEM!! Thanks for posting them here!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Gardengirl are you the one who loves my Jamie mcMurray? I put several Nascar Threads on Car and truck forum. That is so cool. What is going on at Indy this week? Or are you going to New Hampshire?

I wish we had blue Heron`s here bit we do not.

I love that last poem, I try to live my life by most of that. I don`t always succeed but usually I found it to work better than excuses and makes you true to yourself.

Evening all...

Best thing....getting all the lawns done, picked up supplies for weekend, think I know what vehicle I'm purchasing..so all good...

Worse thing...everything went according to hoyle today..no bad thing..

What did I learn..that when you are not feeling the best, you should rest..so off I go..talk tomorrow ...enjoy your weekend...

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

Betty I have a subscription to Consumer Report so if you'd like I can look up the review if you tell me what car.

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Hellnzn11 - Nope - I don't follow NASCAR. Eight years ago, if anyone had told me I would be going to a car race and liking it, I would have told them they were on drugs! All I knew about racing was what I heard about NASCAR.

both of my SILs and BILs are CART/Indy race fans so they talked my DH and I into going to the Mid Ohio CART race in August of 99. That was the start! Then Indy started coming to Richmond (a big NASCAR track) and my driver (Dario Franchitti) moved over to Indy from CART so we started going to the races here. It's a lot of fun because our track is VERY small and with the open wheels, it makes for some exciting times! We have great seats that we get each year - right near the start/finish line and directly across from the pits. We still will use those same seats this year but my friend's DH got us the infield passes. Next year he will get us the "hot passes" which allows us to actually stand around in the pit area during the race. That would be a blast!

To give you an idea of who my driver is, Dario is married to Ashley Judd. She is at every race. Somehow we end up with more video of her then of the race! ;-) Anyway, I am very excited because Dario has not had a good year since 99 and so far this year he's the points leader for the championship. He won the Indy 500 and last weekend's race so my fingers are crossed for tomorrow.

I'm borrowing a good friend's camera so I will share my pics with you guys!

VROOOOOMMM!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Our seats at Cal speedway are right at the start finish too and we can see the whole track that is a mile and 1/2 oval and pit road and victory lane too. I know what you mean. I saw that guy Dario before on a special about his wife.

I still don`t understand which race you got tickets from playing golf with a nascar driver? Nascar or Indy cars? My driver Jamie plays golf, so does Elliot Sadler and several others. Who gave you the tickets or your friend the tickets?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

here is a little fun bedtime story for you...complete with photos.

Ethan and I had the afternoon and evening to ourselves. he has a great imagination and decided that he was going to be a bird and that we needed to build him a nest. so we did, with all the kitchen chairs, afghans, throws and pillows that I could find....also his little 3' tall stepladder. Got it built, was about his bedtime, changed to jammies, and he then decided i was Nana bird, and that we had to get into our nest to sleep.

the pictures tell the rest of the story.....

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

I'm afraid I'd have to steal him from you Sharon, that blond hair and big eyes would just melt my heart. Then I always love OTHER peoples babies LOL just as long as I can give them back.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Liz...colors on the leaf is just soooo striking..love it..did you use metalics?

Araness..maybe we all could give Martha Stewart lessons..so much talent we ought to share..maybe she'd fly us all to her show..that's a way we could get to meet..worth a try lol I also like the idea of spoiling them and then sending them home...

Sher...Ethan is gorgeous..it looks like you are having such a great time...precious memories made..love the quilt top..everything matching in color..perhaps you are Martha...

Best part of the day is not only did my company arrive today but brought me dozen of white roses..how very, very thoughtful..also, made my cattails for the Blue Heron and I can place him near the pond tomorrow..

Worse part..well you know me and cooking..not something I enjoy doing but the entire supper turned out ok and Arthur b.b.q'd steaks for me..so, for desert a nice home baked strawberry and rhubbarb pit..put it out on the table outside and believe me, never, never have I seen a seagull here but one must have thought my baking was #1, because when we came outside to bring out salads etc. he had almost eaten my entire pie..soooo there went desert..

What did I learn..well, have a little area with arbor - it's amongst double treeline so it makes a little hideaway..anyway, kept thinking about getting some stepping stones for pathway..once you purchase the stones you remove sod and place stone where the sod had been, well it came to mind, why not dig out the sod, fill with cement...so 10 bags later I've a little walkway of about 14 stepping stones..about another 15 bags should complete project..thank goodness Atlas block is closed!!..

So all and all I've had quite the day!!!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

nice leaf, so pretty. Worst thing was going to my best friend`s house to see her grandaughter visiting from Texas but she was not there because she died 2 years ago. I cried so hard when I came home after I dropped my dd off.

Best thing, seeing the grandkids of my friend because they are in foster homes now and one is in Texas. We had fun and it is really sentimental and her mean old DH gave me that Book,"What they don`t want you to know". I always wanted it.
