Can anyone reccommend a nice flowering shrub for a full sun area in zone 6?
No Rhodes or Azalea please.
Thanks,,
flowering shrub
Hi Bobangus, this is hard as you give no clue as to where the shrub is to go, like as a single specimen, in a border with others, at a fromt door/porch how big/tall etc, but I will give you some names and you can look them up, Rose, Camellia, Escalonia, Hypericum, Hydrangia, Spirea, Weigelia, Seringia as in Lilac, Choisya, Hardy Fuchsia, Forsythia, Santolina, I could give more, but unless you can give a bit more info, then I feel sure you will find some thing from this list to start you off, good luck, WeeNel
I always say, why grow anything else if you can grow roses? Some roses are a tad tender for zone 6, like the usual hybrid teas you find in the garden centers. Go instead for shrub roses, old-fashioned roses (damask, hybrid perpetual, alba, centifolia, moss, musk (which can take a little shade, too), gallica, polyantha), rugosa roses, David Austin roses, and many species roses. Some are naturally short, some grow as wide as you let it. They come in all colors from white to black-red, including cocoa and lavender. Some are fussy little darlings, most are as tough as old boots and don't mind neglect. You can even get thornless ones! There are several reputable mail order companies for old-fashioned, etc., roses; I can tell you my personal favorite if roses float your boat.
Hi Bobangus,
I live in zone 6A and raise all kinds of roses. The hybrid teas are beautiful but give very few (but very beautiful roses). The grandeflora give more roses and are also quite large and beautiful. Both these roses require lots of pest and fungus care.
I think that the best rose for you white fence would be the floribunda rose called "Black Cherry". I have them. The color is so deep that you can see them from a long distance. The rose has such a beautiful form and keeps its tight for for a long while. They would really stand out against that white fence. This is a great time for planting also.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Teri
This orange rose is also a florabunda rose. I'm not sure of the name right now but it would make almost the same impact as the dark cherry red color of the "Black Cherry rose.
I really like the bright yellow blooms atop the open-airy, medium green foliage of esperanza. It makes seed pods about 4-5 inches long, and grows upright to 3-5 ft. Can be bushier with pruning.
BEAUTIFUL rose, Roses R Red! One of my favorite shades in a rose.
Flowering quince, butterfly bush, lilac, holly, viburnums. These are all full sun, part shade shrubs.
The esperanza (Latin name Tecoma stans) is gorgeous, but in zone 6 it would have to be grown in a pot and brought in for the winter, it's not even going to be close to hardy there.
