Dave,
This question may have been asked before but is it possible to have a feature that would allow us to upload more than one picture to the same thread or posting? This would show multiple thumbnails at the bottom of the posting. It would be especially helpful when you're trying to compare past photos to present ones for showing growth, etc. Not sure I'm making myself clear?
Multiple Pictures.
You can post multiple photos in one thread - but only one photo per post.
I think the only way to show more than one photo in a single post is to use a photo editor to "stitch" them together into a single image.
Big Red,
I like your idea of being able to post mutiple photos in a single 'post'. It would save me alot of time when I am in the coleus forum and want to show more than one close up or if I want to show the changes in a plant during the season. It would be fun to have a series of photos as a plant grows up or to be able to show the seasonal changes in the garden. Seems like about 4-6 thumbnails would fit across the bottom of the dialog box.
I can't imagine it would take up anymore 'space' than making 4-6 posts in a row on a thread. I have noticed that many threads are mostly chat, but, I have hundreds of photos from my cheap little digital camera. I like to show folks what I have seen, that will save them a trip to go see it for themselves. And I never cared if it was about the subject of the thread or about something completely unrelated. I just like photos.
You can always put them in Plantfiles and link to them. There is no limitation on links.
Dave will know if it can be done, but the two problems I see with it are:
1) It would require having multiple upload functions in a single post (think about how the process works - you can only browse and find a single picture at one time....you'd have to have multiple "browse" windows for each post, which would look pretty confusing to most users); and
2) The time it would take to load a single post could be severely affected if there were numerous photos, especially if the image files were big.
Terry,
I have always wondered why the 'site' doesn't edit the photo files down, to fewer pixels.
I don't reduce my photos. Many reasons. I want to keep them in their larger size in case I need them for a commerical purpose and I have to do each one 'manually'. I am guessing that the site programs do that automatically now-hence the thumbnail.
My question is - why do you keep photo files so large in your 'storage'. They are supposed to only be used on the site, meaning they will only be viewed on a computer screen.
You don't have to answer these questions, I am just thinking on screen.
Also about links. They are not as effective as thumbnails. Secondly, lots of people ignore them. I have put links to Plant Piles next to a photo and had people ask me in the very next post questions that would be answered if they clicked on the link. And it happens alot.
And of course another photo for the files.
The pictures do get scaled down if they're too big--I don't know exactly by how much, but I know Dave's got something like that in place to help out the people on dialup.
Ecrane, thought something like that might be going on.
I have in the past lost a photo and had to go back to an old thread to download the photo, the file was the same size as when I first sent it. I am grateful that computer storage has gotten to be 'cheap'. I managed to save about 50 or more photos I thought I had lost when my computer crashed. Lost a lot of music files too.
It is too bad that there is still 'dial up' in the world. I remember the 'old days'. When I was in Paris in 1992 everyone had fiber optics. I would bet their systems are even faster now. We sure are falling behind the rest of the developed world.

Terry,
It would require having multiple upload functions in a single post (think about how the process works - you can only browse and find a single picture at one time....you'd have to have multiple "browse" windows for each post, which would look pretty confusing to most users)
I'm not complaining mind you, but many other forums have multiple uploads and it's actually faster than having to upload them individually to individual posts. Ebay is one of these forums that has this feature. You have to click on the browse button for each photo but they're uploaded all at one time. You click on the browse button, select a photo, click on the browse again to select another, etc. Then you click on the upload button to upload all the photos at once. It's all done in a single window and all your photo file names are listed before you upload, not confusing at all.
I know that Dave is very busy and that this may be more complicated to set up than I realize, but anyhow, it's just a thought. ☺
Thanks.
Red

There is also a method where you CTRL-click each file, then upload all at once. This is what the photo-printing services use.
It is very easy to "batch" reduce your photos with a free program like Irfan (just an example), so there is no need to do them one-by-one. I keep the reduced ones I've uploaded in a DG folder so I can locate them again. It's not *just* for folks on dial-up, it makes it easier on all of us. In addition to connection speed, there is also the memory used to load the big files. :-)
