June Bingo Calls

Woohoo! Time to start! Good luck, everyone! :o)

31.Streptocarpus 'Crystal Ice'

Dibley's description from their website:
"An outstanding variety with blue veins over white flowers. We consider this to be one of the best Steptocarpus ever bred. A medium sized plant with attractive narrow leaves with each flower stem having between 7-13 flowers. Couple this with year round flowering and you have a magnificent new type of streptocarpus."

http://www.gesneriads.ca/strep267.htm - If this doesn't make you want to grow Streps, absolutely nothing in this world will.

http://www.gesneriads.ca/strep268.htm - Close up of the flowers.

http://www.dibleys.com/ - Website and online store of the hybridizer. Sadly, they don't ship to the US or Canada. :o(

http://www.dibleys.com/crystal-ice/index.htm - Hybridizer's page on S. 'Crystal Ice'

http://www.dibleys.com/strep.htm - Hybridizer's information about propagating and general care of Streps

http://www.streptocarpus-info.com/ - Super site, dedicated to providing pictures of Streps. She needs pictures and descriptions. I have at least one picture to send to her. Do you?

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Talk about info!

So... I have a "typical me" comment to make. S. kentaniensis (one of the background species - characteristic narrow leaves) is supposed to be drought tolerant, but mine needs so much water, it is redefining "drought". So much for hoping for a me-friendly strep.

I added another call to up the chances that you'll get to mark one off your list today. :o)

3.AV Bagdad

In the book, Sunset How to Grow African Violets, copyright 1977, sixth printing January 1985, there is a picture of a lovely mini AV named 'Bagdad'. Description, per the book:

Bagdad - orchid lavender with deep blue shading, double; flat, deeply scalloped, dark green girl foliage, compact miniature

Wouldn't you love to grow that one? Well, you can't. I can find absolutely no information about this beautiful girl AV at all. Is it lost forever? Maybe...who knows? It is only one of many, many AVs on the AVSA's Most Wanted List. http://www.avsa.org/Library/VintageViolets.pdf This is a 9 page list of vintage AVs that they're trying to locate. Please check the list. Maybe you're growing one of the AVs listed. Think it's not possible that you could have one? We've all seen pictures of 'Blue Dragon' and many of us grow it and you can find it on eBay. It was on the Most Wanted List printed in March/April 2006. The list was updated in December 2006, and you'll notice a blank space where 'Blue Dragon' used to be. So, don't assume you couldn't possibly have anything on the list.

We simply must propagate and share our plants. It is not difficult to put down leaves and is so much fun to share plants and leaves with friends. :o) Rachel's Reflections has a fabulous text and pictorial primer on starting leaves. http://www.rachelsreflections.com/violets3.htm And if you still need help, start a thread and you know someone will come along soon and help you as much as you need. :o)

LOL I *told* you I was gonna make y'all learn something! ;o) I hope it wasn't too much. I've really enjoyed putting all this info together, and learned tons in the process.

I just don't understand why you can't grow Streps. I have the same stingy watering habits you do, and mine are full of buds again. We've got to come up with one you can grow...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just love all your information....have to come back and read "after the front porch showdown" today....

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

brain hurts...ouch!

lol jk

Glad you like it, Gail! :o)

cjo, there will *not* be a test at the end of the game, so only read what you want to. :oP

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

shucks, i got to go buy another note book and printer paper ,think i'm going to need it
thanks far all the info

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

We can already tell who the 'over achievers' are and I am lagging waaaay behind.....(LOL)

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

Hmmm...a test over it might be fun, actually! lol Nerd alert, nerd alert!! ; )

Well, I think threegardeners(??) did this when she held cards and I really liked it...so...

there are 23 players this game-
48% had A.V. Baghdad on their card.
65% had streptocarpus 'Crystal Ice'

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Roflol. Stats!

I picked my numbers by lottery so it should be quite random.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Uhmm, if you guys are going to be so intellectual this early in the morning I'm going back to bed...

and a discussion of a test.!!???!!!..

Oh my what has my lil Av group come to...

Nobody can say I hang with a bunch of nobodies......lol

Good Morning ladies! :)

MsC

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

I had one, I had one! Excuse me, first time ever to play so I was excited to get to mark one off my card : )). I for one enjoy all the extra info and I have already learned a few things between the links and today's details. I did not know that the "aeschynanthus" or lipstick plant was part of this great gessie family. I had to look up more info on anything with the name "Hot Flash" as I close in on 50 and they become more and more a part of my life :0)) I like the stats, I was wondering how many ended up playing. Looking forward to more fun.
~Brenda

Hey!! No making fun of the nerdy kid in the class!! The really bad part is...I had a lot of this already bookmarked from "pleasure reading" I've done in the past. What took the most time was gathering all my links and matching them to the correct plant. :oP

I really do hope everyone enjoys all the info (you don't have to read it if you don't want to!), but if you don't, tell me and I'll stop posting it and sulk in the corner for the rest of the month! ;o) LOL JK

Love the stats! I'm glad to see we ended up with such a big group playing! :o) What percentage of players had *both* calls for today? :oP ~ducking and running in case cjo throws something at me~

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Whahoo! Brenda got one!!

Me too!!

MsC

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Looks like MsCritterkeeper got her coffee fix!! Or was it having one of the calls?? :))

~Brenda

Isn't it fun to mark off that first call?? It's more fun to mark off the last one! ;o) Congrats you two!

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

Interestingly enough, 4 people had both calls for the day. Only 1 person didn't get either.

Awww, that's just sad! On the other hand, it's alright. Remember...losers are winners, too. :o)

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

That would be me...I am the ONE! LOL

:o( Bless your heart! Maybe tomorrow will be a better day for you and you'll get both! :o)

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

LOL that is okay, it doesn't matter who gets the first ones, like you said...the last one is the biggy! Are you doing just two calls a day? Is that the plan? Love all of the information!

LOL How many calls per day would you like me to do? I'm just along for the ride, so I'll do what everyone else wants. :o)

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Whatever you want to do is how we will play...lol you are the host! If you played when I hosted you will remember my game didn't last but a couple of weeks I think...I got so excited, I made calls all day long..lol Everyone does it differently, some do a couple a day with a bonus later in the day and some made calls in the morning and in the evening...I don't think anyone really minds how you do it...I was just curious..

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Are we supposed to make a card? I'm still not sure how to proceed - there's a reason I'm a Special Ed teacher.

Jackie

(Zone 1)

Well .... I never got my card in, so I'm not playing Bingo this month! :( But, I will be lurking now and then to see what's happening with the game and where everyone's at! Good luck to all of you players!

GREAT info too, Rain! I remember coming across that Dibley's site a few months ago ... but I'm past the "Hot Flash" stage in life (The stage Brenda referred to that she is beginning) and alas, my brain freeze has stayed with me! So, thank you for posting those links! I've really enjoyed reading up again!

..... In a few more months, I hope someone around here will post the links again. :)

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Jackie, you just mark off the names as they are called. You turned in a list of fifteen names, that is considered your "Bingo Card". So as they are called mark them on your list "card" and when all fifteen have been called, you have BINGO!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sorry to be the bearer of difficult to accept news but our friend, Diane Donner (1gardengram) died this afternoon. It's so hard on her family and friends.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I just read that on the Prayer Forum, it just breaks my heart! She was such a sweet person and loved by so many!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

She certainly was.

Thank you for letting us know, pirl. Diane was a gem, and we'll all miss her so much.

pirl graciously started a thread for us here on the AV board where we can share our thoughts, feelings, and memories. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/733945/

I believe that I will wait a while to post calls. We'll have a moment of silence for Diane.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

She loved the game so much that perhaps you should continue in her memory.

I've posted today's calls. Here's the information on them. I hope you all enjoy the pictures and info. :o)

4.AV Buckley's Spoon

This one is on the list just because I *love* the leaves. :o) I have read that, while there are other AVs with spooned foliage, Buckley's Spoon is the most spectacular display of that leaf type.

22.Nautilocalyx pemphidius

Truthfully, I can't find much along the lines of cultivation tips for these. Evidently, they like care much the same as Episcias. The first two picture links seem to indicate they're pretty easy if kept quite humid.

Awesome Info, Amy! I love that AV Buckley's Spoon! I've never, ever seen an AV with leaves like that! Very Cool!

..... and, I've never heard of that plant called Nautilocalyx! Love it!

:) Hope y'all don't mind me "lurking" on the Bingo thread, I'm not playing this time, but sure am enjoying the pic's and info!

Liiiiinnnn, why didn't you tell me you didn't have your card in?? I would have waited a little more for you to have time. Grrr... Of course we don't mind you being here. We *wanted* you to play Bingo with us, but nooooo! LOL JK Post all you like!

Isn't that Buckley's Spoon amazing? And the Nautilocalyx looks to be so shiny, doesn't it?

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Missed me again...lol 0 of 4 calls...

(Zone 1)

hee hee ... I decided not to play this month ... so much going on and I'm going to be away for a few days here and there, so I just figured I'd opt out of the game this month. I don't know if I'll play in July either, since I'm going to be out of town visiting my sister for a week or two, but I hope to play in August!

I do love that one called Buckley's Spoon and that plant called Nautilocalyx! I've got to do some research on that one! I'm assuming it's in the Gessie family too?

(Zone 1)

Oh Janet .... :( Your luck will change soon, I'm sure! Hang in there!
