Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

CJO, I have known a few families with kids that had Autism Spectrum Disorder, and they pretty much had to work intensively with behavior and have everyone in the family learn to be very consistent. The good news was that as the kids got older all of that teaching, modeling behavior, and prayer coalesced into some pretty decent young people. Your son is learning from what you're doing, but you probably won't get to see as much evidence of that til he's a little older. You'll be in my prayers - just remember that you're planting little bitty seeds in him everyday, and those seeds will germinate in their own time.

Better check those cards for today's calls! :o)

34.Titanotrichum oldhamii

I know nothing about this one. :oP That seems to be a theme with this list... LOL (I told you I don't grow any of these, I just admire them from afar!) I think it's pretty, and quite interesting, with the whole process of producing propagules rather than seeds. I'll be the first to admit, I don't fully understand propagules. ;o)

10.AV The Sorceress

This is one of David Senk's AVs. I really like the ones he hybridizes, however, they can be quite left of center when compared to traditional AVs, and I've seen expressed by some people that they don't particularly care for them. Like them or not, I think we can all agree that some of them are *really* unique.

http://groups.msn.com/AfricanVioletNotebook/davidsenk.msnw - This is a fairly short biography of David Senk, and includes quite a few photos of his AVs. The Sorceress is pictured on page 2. (3 pages long)

http://www.vintageviolets.org/The_Violet_Lab.htm - Another page, similar to the first, but with a little more info on the AVs themselves, along with more pictures. (5 pages long)

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

None for me today but I really enjoyed the David Senk article, some of those are some wild looking violets and I can definitely see where The Sorceress gets her name!

I must be a more traditional kind of gal because the two I liked the best look more like basic violets to me. I thought that the Springtime Wasp and the Parakeet were beautiful. Anything yellow gets my vote!

Critterologist I hope your right about the peony! This one had a nice set of tuber roots and I have high hopes since it's already acclimated to our very cold winter temps. Have my son / yard boy : )) coming over today to help me plant it and at least a dozen small double white lilac starts along with a small bush. I was able to get a ton of other things and since I'm new to both inside and outside gardening I'm very excited!

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

57% chose Titanotrichum oldhamii
26% chose AV The Sorceress

4 had both. 8 had none.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am supposed to be ironing my bermudas right now and packing!!!!!
Just had to take a peep!!!! At one time, Allison sent me a rare wasp by David Senk................the mother divided into 3 plants.....she hasn't bloomed yet......

Was it Vespa Verde? I got that one, too. Killed it... :oP Made me mad, too, cause I like wasps!

I'm glad you enjoyed the article, Brenda. I did, too. It's interesting the plants he is able to come up with. Some I'm not particularly fond of and some I like a lot. They usually sell for tons on eBay, so I'm in no danger of buying any. It's neat to think what AVs might look like in 10 years if he continues, or if others start trying for super-different results the way he seems to.

cjo, you're right on the ball with those stats! :o) Thanks! It's really neat to see how many had interest in each one.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

:'( NONE LOL

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Morning ladies,
I got another one...yeah!

Have a great weekend gail & be careful while you travel...

Great info raingazer..you do a fantastic job educating us.

cjo- Thanks for doing the math on the stats for us...It amazes me how you can enjoy it so early in the morning..lol

The grandbaby made it here finally & we are watching Sesame Street...:)
MsC

Thanks, MsC! Glad you like it. :o) And I'm thrilled for you that you've got the grandbaby! You're in for so much fun! Wave hi to Big Bird for me! ;o) Though, when I think of it...Oscar the Grouch was always my favorite...

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Snuffaluppagus for me..lol

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Gail be sure and wear open toed shoes with those bermudas and show off that poor broken toe, maybe the grand daughters will go easy on you (and your pocketbook) then! Enjoy the trip!

RG I was interested to see that David Senk encourages everyone to grow at least one of the old time violets and keep them all going. So he's into the old and the new. I don't mind if there are lots of new and different looking violets out in ten years but I want to see the old standbys that our grandma's grew too!

My grandma has been gone for nearly 20 years but my aunt had her mothers last two violets and even with never having been re potted (can we say necks!!) they were still blooming strong. So six months or so ago she gave me four leaves. I have three of them still going (I've put the same leaves down twice now) and I'm trying to pass the babies to everyone in the family that wants them. I haven't seen the babies bloom yet and they are NOID's of course but just the fact that they were Grandma's makes them special to me.

Brenda that is wonderful! I have my Granny's Amaryllis and Crinum and they are priceless to me!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Janet, I love the idea of heirloom plants!! My aunt also had my grandmas aloe plant and a beautiful, huge blooming hoya carnosa that I now have nice plants from. My enthusiasm for the passing them on down has worn off onto my aunt and she is now making more starts from the hoya for some others in the family. I showed her the Rob's Violet site and she decided to cut the necks off the original violets and re pot them and lost both of them : (( Just too much stress after 20 years I guess. I had to duck for awhile after that when I saw her : )) But she has babies from both of them from my leaves so we are happy for that!

I'm sorry guys, but the Cookie Monster rules.

Gail, I missed anything about a broken toe! I'll have to go look around and try to find where you posted what happened. Goodness, lady! I sure hope you're alright! Hugs to you! :o)

LOL Janet, he always reminded me of a sheepdog! I like Snuffy, too. :o)

I read that too, Brenda, and thought how neat it is that he's got all these totally different ones, but still has an affection for the originals. My grandmother was into perennials and such, but I don't have any heirloom plants from anyone in my family. :o( Kinda sad, and I wish I did, but it's alright, because I'm growing plenty of plants that I can pass on to my kids later on. I'll just start a new tradition for our family! :o)

Whoa! I started typing a reply, answered the phone, came back and finished typing and had already missed several posts! LOL

Eww, Brenda, don't you just hate when you give someone "good advice" and it goes horribly wrong? I'm glad you had babies to give her to replace them, though. :o)

cjo, Cookie Monster, is cool, too. He's blue (which we all know I like) and really, who doesn't like cookies?? LOL

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

RG new traditions are great! Of my four kids only the youngest (23 year old boy) has any real affection for plants yet. But I'll keep everything going and in a few more years they'll all at least want one or two just to make dear ol' mom happy : ))

MsC Sesame Street is sounding good to me (my vote is for Oscar the Grouch) my 17 month old grandson is in love with Dora and Boots, can you say backpack, backpack!! I hear it in my sleep at times! LOL

Psssst Janet, since we have this heirloom plant thing in common maybe now you'll clue me in on that dead of night meeting behind a garage some where..... ; ; )

~Brenda

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

LOL Brenda....no problem...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am the luckiest person ever................i was running so late today getting my oil changed, taking care of plants, etc.....I decided to call and cancel my reservation for tonight (or pay for it if I had to) and leave in the morning....just couldn't get it all done...............in fact, I got a big shipment in from Rob's Violet Barn today (had no idea it was coming this soon)............To make a longer story short, i called to cancel my reservations for tonight and Comfort Inn Suites said that I didn't have any reservations this weekend (they are lying through their teeth with confirmation and all).

So.................good thing I didn't leave right now and head that way...........with all the camps in Kerrville, I wouldn't have had a place to stay...................finally found a place to stay tomorrow night............don't have to be at camp until 4:00 tomorrow afternoon anyway.....was just making it easier on myself.

Now I can check my calls today, ladies!!!! I see we are now talking about favorite children's shows since Ms. C is babysitting.................my adult childrens' favorite was always Sesame Street (I don't think they even any more back 36 years ago)

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

oooohhh...Rob's Violet Barn? Got pictures? ; )

Just checked in for the first time today and I have 6 of the picks! Unbelievable - something is going good. Gail, it's a good thing you didn't have reservations, now you can have plant fun.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am shocked that these plants are soooo big and healthy......I just assumed that everything from Rob's would be small.
OK...........cjolene.................I will get my camera out............don't know what you will be able to tell.....but......

Here are the three containers.....only 2 violets in the Apache series....the rest are episicas, kohlerias, 1 Nakako chirita, 1 Pentadini and 1 Ceropegia linearis woodii (miniature houseplant)

But first, I want to show you my cactus plant getting ready to explode with blooms....
PS. Susan, wow, you have 6............I would love to send you a surprise box!!!!

These are all episcias.....every plant is staying in a Bio Dome for a long time............Rob even put a note in saying that all variegated episcias should be grown at all times under glass.....
