Maria, you are even closer... I still have to go and get ice cream at Uncle Ed's front porch... believe me I am going to call you when I go... I have to take 2 days off this week.. so I am going to visit you!!!!!
wonderful
Kassia, Thank you for sharing your home and gardens with us. It was a gorgeous day! I enjoyed meeting new folks.
I took home a "Blue Eyes" DL in a black plastic pot. Who brought that one?
Lynda
yeah, whoever bought the various sedums? I'd like to note its er, um, Mommy or Daddy. And the coleus cuttings wrapped up in paper towels? Same, although I don't expect to overwinter them. I did successfully keep a sweet potato vine 'margarita' alive this winter.
xxxx to all,
Carrie
all these plants came from Pixie if I am not mistaken!!!
All my plants were potted and had writing on the pot. If it was not potted....it wasn't from me.
Hello everyone! I'm alive and well.
Kassia, I would love to see you! It's amazing how much your warmth and kindness come through even through the internet.
I think you would like it here too. Very New Englandy with a town green with all the churches on it. On a clear day, from our beach, you can almost see Anita & Pirl across the sound.
Dave, I am going to stop by!!! my mom and I are going to make some day trips...I want to build some good memories ... and she is all excited I got her to see Mike Lowe roses in Nashua, and we are going to see Gram end of July... but you, Yank, Victor and Harper are close enough for us to do a day trip...
hopefully our furniture will be delivered tomorrow and so we may can start wondering aroung New England the weekend of July 14!!!
since I started gardening last year and got to meet Laura and then you guys at DG my life has changed... I have been inspired, encouraged, and most of all I have learned so much from you guys... and I have laughed a lot too... so wonderful... so you guys are bringing out the best in me... the evil twin is not coming out much latelly!!!
Kassia - have you been to White Flower Farms in Litchfield? That is a great place to take your Mom. Dave47 - is that a possible site for the Fall RU? I am geographically challenged - is that central for everyone?
Well, can we combine Logees and White Flower Farms? I mean, are they close enough to do one in the morning - stop for lunch, then move on to the next?
Thanks Yankee.. I am going to check that place... we are going to Garden in the woods next Friday... but that's in FRAMINGHAM... and I have never been there!!! shame on me!!!
Yes, K, shame on both of us, because I haven't been there in years - way before I heard about DG. Today is too hot to go ANYWHERE!
xxx, Carrie
Kassia, I look forward to it!
I know CT is a small state but Logees and Whiteflower Farm are on opposite ends of it. There is not a good way to get from one to the other that I am aware of. It could be a couple hours drive on state roads.
But I'm sure their are other options like the Elizabeth Park rose garden in W. Hartford with WFF.
I don't know anything about this region - so I will leave it to others.
Dave, I think a rose garden is a perfect place for the fall!!!! oh well....
I want to thank everyone from the RU who donated something to the box of goodies I got today!! I got sunflower seeds, candy lily, Hibiscus "disco Bell" (thanks Andy!!!) thornless blackberry bushes!!!!(thanks Memory!) ....all kinds of goodies that made my day!
Thank you so much and I hope i get to me you all some day.
Celeste
I'm glad you got a few of my seeds, Pixie. Plant them ASAP.
The Hibiscus will have buds in time for your first frost, lol. They will be big and strong next year. They are white with a pink pinwheel in them.
The Candy Lily will bloom next year. I saved seed from only the interesting colored plants which are segregated from the normal all yellow. You will likely still get many plain yellow.
Andy P
Andy, how big does Disco Bell get? (so i give it enough room)
I first plant them in a nursery about 8 inches apart, then move them in early Spring while still dormant. They get 24 - 30 inches tall and wide with 6 - 9 inch flowers in August - September. Rich, well drained soil and a little more water than average. Full sun. Mulch with leaves or something for the winter. You may loose 20% the first winter, those that survive will likely live for many years.
Andy,
In another thread you said you were giving up on hardy hibiscus, but didn't really say why in a way I could understand.
xxx, Carrie
I don't blame you Andy. If it requires too much care...bye bye.
IF they germinate, and IF they grow, and IF they get saw flies, with what would I spray them? Although I'm with you guys on this one, but maybe the saw flies don't know where I live!
xx, Carrie
I grew hardy Hibiscus for over 15 years without a problem, they are easy and a real eye catcher. Then these critters came in. Other gardeners in the area are having the same problem. Now one Rose of Sharon has been hit, a year old plant. No big loss there but I have some very large ones that I fear for.
No natural predator for Saw Fly or Saw Fly Larva?
I just hope they like the Brockton air better. I live on the border of Boston so it's not so much country as out by Andy -- hypotheticaly, at least.
xxx, Carrie
Is this a 'Country mouse/City mouse' thing?
No natural predators that I know of.
Karen, I grabbed one of your potted Tiger Lilies, it got planted today. I can deal with the red Lily beetle.
Sarahskeeper, just keep your lilies sprayed with Sevin if you notice signs of lily beetle on them. I wonder if Sevin will work on the sawfly larvae. I have them, too. I have one hibiscus, and it looks just awful. I will try the Sevin on it.
So who here would like to come to my RU on July 22nd? I have posted an open invite in this forum and the daylilies forum. I have written to Dave twice to get it made into a sticky, but no luck. Please visit that thread if you'd like to come, and let me know what kind of food you could bring. I will post who is coming and what they're bringing. Please feel free to D-mail me, too. I have some personal friends who will be coming. Hope to see a lot of you there! My daylilies will be spectacular.
Karen
Karen, I don't use Sevin. The only plants I spray are my fruit trees. The rest are on their own. I occasionally use insecticidal soap.
I hand pick the Lily beetles.
If your Hibiscus looks real bad now, they may not have the energy to survive the upcoming winter.
Andy P
Karen, I beliefe I told you I will not be at home at that time, so sorry to miss it
Andy, I looked at my hibiscus last night and it was covered in sawfly larvae! I've never had a problem with them before, and If it weren't for your recent post I would never have known what they are.
I use merit for lily beetles, sold under the name of Bayer Tree and shrub care. It is a systemic and only requies one soaking in the spring as the plants are emerging.
Hey folks....I enjoyed your RU...through the pictures...I now feel like I have met more of you than just Dave & Kassia!! Maybe someday I can get "Up Nawth". Jo
Nuts,
Where in the world is Halifax? The only one I know of is in Nova Scotia! I actually don't think I can make it - just remembered my father, almost died in a stroke in November, is coming to Boston that weekend from New Mexico with his entire medical team, well, at least his entire home care team. And MY daylilies will be spectacular too, BTW.
xxx, Carrie
Carrie and Maria, sorry you can't make it. You will be missed. Carrie, I hope you have a nice visit with your father. I live with my father, who is elderly and in early stages or Alzheimer's or dementia. Anyhow, my youngest sister Hope and her 16-year-old daughter Chrystal live here, too, and we all pitch in to help Dad out. Dad will be at my RU. Don't know if Hope and Chrystal will be interested. They like gardening somewhat, but aren't addicted like I am.
Oh, btw, Halifax is near Plymouth. Next to East Bridgewater, Plympton Hanson, Pembroke and Kingston.
Andy, they do look bad now. If they don't survive the winter, then I just won't be bothering them anymore. I certainly have no plans to get more, anyhow. I don't like a lot of stuff that needs too much care. Daylilies and Hostas are so carefree. I'll stick with them.
Karen
roadrunner, glad you posted....if you ever come North you better bring warm clothes! It's been rather chilly as of late and we are known for sudden temperture changes. Last Tues & Wed it was 92 here......on friday 70 Sat. 66 and Sun, 69. I fear you'd freeze!!! LOL
My brother just moved from Clifton AZ. to Duncan AZ......anywhere near you?
Pixie - the last two days have been like heaven to me. Thank goodness i never took that job in Birmingham Alabama - I think the heat and humitidy would have killed me.
Been absolutely gorgeous the last three days. Every day should be like this.
