I want to introduce my friend....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The American tv audience for hockey is very low. They always have lousy ratings. That's the major networks never carry it. By the way, I always liked both Muhammed Ali and Mr. Rogers. One of the funniest tv skits I can remember was a Second City TV show where they had a PBS boxing tournament and Mr. Rogers was fighting Julia Child.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes! That skit was hysterical!

New Boston, NH

Hi, I may be new.

Doesn't anyone out there love the Red Sox?

Wait, isn't this a gardening thing? Anyone else have p i or a sunburn?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I got my first touch of p.i. on Sunday. The Tech Nu seems to be keeping it in check.

If a game as violent as American Football can avoid fights, hockey should be able to.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I am a Sabres fan, well, I'm from Buffalo, lol, but I usually watch Don Cherry and Ron McLean on CBLT-TV when I have the choice. "Hockey night in Canada, and Coach's Corner." US coverage is really poor, kind of like with Soccer.
I love the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto....and because our borders were "friendly," , I grew up having a great respect for Canada and it's institutions, especially Coffee Crisp candy bars, and hockey. I live 5 minutes from the Peace Bridge now. It would be nice for the Stanley Cup to return "home" to Canada this year.
Actually, the fighting is far less prominent in hockey than in the past, and there has been a gradual turnover to making the game faster, and much more about skating and skill. Perhaps becaue of the number of European players these days. I think it may still be awhile until the old-timers in the league adapt to these changes or retire, lol.
Congrats Gram, on your official retirement. Just in time for Summer!

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

We love the Red Sox here. That's why we have the cable tv package that we have. so My DH can watch all the games. He loves baseball in general. A lot of people out here in Saugus love hockey. The high school has fielded a prize winning team from time to time. We even have a local hockey rink. Down in NJ where I am from, hockey was a prep school sport. none of our local high schools had teams. They do now, though, according to my brother the hockey fan.
I go to the UMass football games to see the marching band. Of course, because my daughter plays in it.
Enough of this sports talk!!! I can't believe I wrote this!
Martha (a non sports fan)

Hi sbbsas58 - you may be new? You don't know? Welcome if you are new!! I'm old!! I'm 58 too but feel like 85 after chasing my grandson! Dave, what's p.i. - cause I may be getting it also? Haven't touched it yet but got to (sprayed it cause I go ballistic when I see it). It's in the middle of the new garden I'm working on and I have to pull the vine out. Last time I did that I didn't know what it was (no leaves yet) I just kept pulling on these vines. There were a lot of them when we were clearing our back yard and I was covered with p.i. if that stands for poison ivy. Oozzing and bleeding all over hands, arms, face and legs !!! I will be more careful and covered for this project!!!!!!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hellobebe, you lucky dog! You can watch CBC coverage of the games! sorry about the Sabres. Honestly, if the Senators weren't playing I would definitely be rooting for Buffalo. Honestly, it's got to be the Sabres turn soon to win the Stanley Cup.

AND you get Coffee Crisp, Smarties, Tim Hortons (none here), and Shreddies!

And try and find Christmas plum pudding, fruitcake, mince tarts, or even just golden raisins!

I have to go to upscale yuppie grocery stores just to get basic baking ingredients which are not (1) a mix or (2) chocolate!

And I can't buy blocks of dates either. You know how you can go to Safeway, or whatever, and buy a 2 pound block of dates . . . here you have to buy hyperexpensive packages of pitted dates.

Sometimes I have my family send Care packages. LOL

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

We attack the PI heavily here as my neighbor is deathly allergic to it. The birdies eat the berries and you find bits of it popping up in garden beds all over. I keep the roundup handy for this. I use my mom's remedy if I think I have been exposed. I wash the affected area with Fels Naptha soap. I keep some on hand just for this purpose. Brown soap as she calls it. you can shave it and melt it and put it in with your clothes in the laundry to get the oil off as well.
Martha

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Martha, as a non-athlete, (ok, well I can ride a bike, lol,) I am a selective sports fan. I think that it is almost impossible to not know something about at least one team or sport because our culture places a high value on athletics. So don't feel bad that it surfaces in your conversation from time to time, lol. We like the Red Sox here too.
Seandor, thanks for the condolences...I hope that the Sabres can do it at least once, especially for the hard-core fans who have watched the team through thick and thin.
I love Canada! Luckily, we now have Tim Horton's here in Buffalo. If I go across the border any time soon, I will let you know, and maybe there are some goodies you would like. I'd be happy to send you a care package. :)

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

And have we heard from the mythical land_steward yet? Noooooooooooooo!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

gardenmart - thank you for the info on the soap. I'm going to get that before I get into the poison ivy. Roundup is what I also use on it. We have had a lot of it in this area but it is pretty much under control now in our yards. Just once in a while it pops up somewhere and we get after it. I'm glad my allergic reaction is not deadly, it's all on the skin but once the reaction starts it takes a long time to go away because it gets into my system.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Maybe L_S went to Canada . . . aka Miami North

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Should we call the police and file a missing person report? I'm getting very worried. We might have scared him away and we're really friendly, just..... "goofy"! Maybe he needs my help and doesn't know how to work Dave's Garden - does that sound like anyone else besides me? Probably not ;-)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I keep watching the new subscribers list - no sign.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Tecnu is fantastic on poison ivy - especially if treated within hours of exposure. For killing it, Brush - B- Gone is much better than Roundup.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks victor. If the poison ivy isn't dead, I'll try the Brush-B-Gone. Is the other stuff a lotion or a soap?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's a lotion that binds to the oil (urushiol) that causes the rash. You then rinse it away with water.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Victor , great minds think a like...I use both. Nothing kills P.I. like Brush-B-Gone!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Now that I shave my head, my brush be gone too.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor, be sure to use a good sunscreen. (public service announcement of the day)

edit to add: don't worry about l_s...I spoke to him on the phone today. the problem is, he's just not addicted yet. he's been very busy, but will be on vacation and have lots of DG time. After all, he is covering for superGram (besides his regular workload, which was not inconsiderable...is that a double negative??)

gram - tell l_s we're anxious to get him addicted to us. I know he's real cause I looked him up on the membership list and he's from Buffalo - is he still busy shoveling snow or was that just Oswego that got hammered with snow this year? What were you doing up at 12:40 AM. Isn't that kinda late? Us grams need our rest, even supergrams!! the other grammy

ps - Colin was inside while I was on the deck taking a photo of a hummingbird. He was not happy - he wanted to be where I was!!

If L-S is from Buffalo, he may be dealing with post-hockey depression. The Buffalo Sabres just lost the Eastern Conference (and the right to go to the Stanley Cup playoffs) to the Ottawa Senators . . .

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

lol....you guys are good!!!!!!!!!! as usual!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gram, congratulations!!!!! I could totally retire right now... but then I would have to stop gardening!!!!! lol.....

welcome LS..... whoever you are... are you real???

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Yes Grammy, pi was poison ivy. I'm not good at hunting it down & destroying the plants for some odd reason. But it has remained one small bumb with the help of Technu. As Victor explained, it really works.
Now to find Brush-B-Gone

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I bought mine online Dave. I think it's made by Ortho. What toxic chemical isn't??

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I would use chemicals on PI because it uses chemicals on me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm with you. It really kills me. Last time I got it, I needed two treatments of steroid - not the MLB kind though.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Is poison ivy really that prevalent here? I don't think I have ever seen it in my entire life - I certainly never heard of gardeners having to cope with this in BC.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I just saw some poison ivy the other day. Around here it seems most common in developments that build in the woods or near old farm rows. Since it usually gets worked under while building it goes unnoticed until it comes back up. I have treated it well with weed killers containing triclopyr.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

so in an urban neighbourhood ove 100 years old, pi is not likely to show up, right?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Birds can bring it anywhere. I've seen it around NYC.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

D_mn! Well, I guess I will recognize it once I get a rash. lol

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Leaves be three; let it be. It's very common around here.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Welcome L_S, hope these nuts haven't scared you off for good! Or maybe gram just loaded you up on work so you'll never get done and get on here to visit us.
Someone might want to check and see if L_S is still breathing under the pile of work gram left him under. Can't ask gram to go check..she's to busy with her gardening to even say hi to us on a regular basis!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sorry but at this point I just don't believe said person exists. Does anyone remember a hilarious episode of MASH where they made up a fictitious person named Tuttle and before long, everyone believed he existed??

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Can we rename this thread "mystery man"? I love MASH! I don't remember the episode though. Gotta put those old shows on my netflix list.

Seandor, I've got some poison ivy growing strong and healthy in my yard. You want some?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

well, gram is in lalalala land of gardening... I am going to call her if I don't see any posts for the next few hours....

about her "supposed friend" maybe she has him working with her .... gardening... so they both have dirt under their fingernails...

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

poison ivy... I have TONS in the back.... anyone that wants some let me know... I will be happy to share it too... and alsp poison oak...

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Knock it off! We are gonna hurt Gram's feelings. I'm sure he exists! In fact he called me just the other day. He and Harvey, Mr Snufflelopagus, Barney, Tuttle and I had nice chat until Norman Bates' mother showed up (she is so mean!).
