Maybe interest in new forum for gardening in the tropics?

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Carol, I'm gonna go check out your new post. Are there any blue hoyas? I keep meaning to get on your site and order a hoya, but then I get caught up here and that's all she wrote! I would LOVE seeds! What can I send you? I learns something new everyday on DG....got a pic of that blue clerodendron? My glory bowers are doing sooooo well, now if I could just get them to bloom! Of course they are just babies, but I do love the flowers.....

Probably won't order for a week or so, forgot I'm gonna be gone. But I will soon!!!!

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

*chuckles at Dale*

Hey, I spent most of my daylight time underwater, and the rest, in the shade or under sunscreen, so phooey on youey. ;) My coworkers were always amazed at how I could spend a week in the Caribbean and not at least bring back a sunburn. They considered it a waste. I, on the other hand, wonder if they ever encountered sand fleas when they weren't complaining about not having access to cable channels...

*shrugs and just smiles*

I would love to see this new Forum take its place amongst the other great ones we have. While the current DG population in tropical areas might be sparse, having the Forum might encourage others in those areas to visit the site. And it sure seems like there's a great startup group to kick off the Forum!

Maybe if everyone who supports this effort puts a post on Daves Forum? I don't know what the protocol is...but...whatever it is, let's do it in SPADES.

TuttiFrutti, Next time then! Sun burn ya to a crispy critter.

To all, Dmail camplain ............(campaign)?

Shari, The blue above is Angelonia, aka summer snapdragon. It is a short lived perennial in tropical climates.

Mornin everyone!!

It's 4 something in the mornin. Dogs all barking at something...thought i'd get up and see what's up on my favorite site.

I've just started adding blue here too. We found a plant called plumbago. Originally from South Africa, this perrennial has beautiful blue flowers, as far as I can tell, it has blooms on it always...can be kept small by pruning and really adds a nice color to the garden. as soon as the sun comes up, i will get out and take a few pix of mine...in the meantime, here is a link with some pix and info on plumbago. Now, where's that coffee pot!

Dale - I feel vindicated! Snaps are one of my favorite flowers, so at least I know I can still recognize them! That was a beautiful pic. But then all of yours are. How do you do it?

Carol and Donna - remind me to call on you two next time I give a lecture on the power of the Warrior Princesess! You go girls!!!!

John - I am drinking a Sumatra blend that is black and STRONG! Just the think to wake me up on a quiet Sunday morning. The rest of the island is pretty much still sleeping, but I had to check on my favorite site too. I am looking into plumbago as well. Awaken slowly and sweetly my friend.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Shari...where do you get this Sumatra blend. I am a big tea drinker in the mornings.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Not a tea, a strong coffee. Lion's Brand. You should have tons - mfg in Hawaii. I drink my tea at night....but gotta have my caffene in the am.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

AH...we grow our own coffee...at least DH does..and it is great. I get enough jolt from my tea in the a.m....sweet and white! Really KEWL! LOL

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

ROFL! Out Loud!!! Really! Carol, I adore you!

No one else will understand, but believe me folks - she's a gem!

As a total beginner to DG .
I really have no idea what yall are talking about ?

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

According to posts on thread "Dave, are you doing maintenance today", Dave is in California at a roundup. This is summer, he has a family, many of us get a little time off. As more different people chime in on this thread, you will get a forum. Takes a little time as so many forums get started and then not much posting.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Ginger...we don't either: just having fun. You want a tropicals forum for Zones 10+? Chime in here....

Carol

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

We have a Oz forum here .
And no one uses it ?
1/2 of Australia on the east coast is in the tropics .
The rest of it is Shiteney & Melbourne .
And neither of them can play VFL / AFL .
The Lions keep winning . lol

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Where do you live, Ginger? We spent a summer in Mooloolaba and drove all over Oz. Love it...except for Sidney and Melbourne...too many cars!!!

We are just trying to get interest up so that us Tropical LIVERS and GROWERS can have a forum...

Carol

Go Lions

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Hi AlohaHoya ,
I'm on the Gold Coast . About 150 klms South of Mooloolaba .
I Got the impression this thread was trying to start a NEW forum for each Zone .
As I said I'm new here and didn't read every post .
I must be dyslexic , Any more than 3 blines and I loose interest .
Good luck with your Quest . Kell

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Ginger...no...it's not a forum for each zone...

Growing tropical plants is very popular, and most of the folks are growing them in non-tropical areas and doing miracles getting them to survive!!! Some of us LIVE in tropical zones where we face different challenges...and we want a forum to talk about these factors, exchange recipes (our fruit/vegies are usually different too...or have different things included).

Take care,
CArol

You down by Byrons' Bay?

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Sort of .
Byron is in Cockroach country , NSW.
We are in Toad country , Queensland .

Hiya! Spent some time in Cairns last year....Absolutely loved it! Plan on going back as soon as we get some other trips out of the way. Welcome to our little (!) discussion. All are welcome, stay awhile....tropical sunshine can wear ya down, gotta sit back and relax. Share a viewpoint or two. This was one of my favorite plants in Cairns:

Dale, nice hibiscus but I'm more interested in your little porch there. Think you could dismantle it and send it to me? Don't forget the rock on the columns either. LOL

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Not my porch, not my plant either. Neither is this one>

YES! A tropical zone garden forum that includes divers pictures of underwater life and tropical aquariums would be wonderful! I may never experience the tropics in the flesh but I would love to visit a forum about it from the gardeners who are so fortunate.

Give them a place of their own and I will have another great place to lurk.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Why thank you Zany! We will be happy to give you a pleasant moment or two, but keep in mind that this forum would not just be frivolous....we have legitimate gardening issues to discuss, as well as sharing our pics and recipes! :-) And I for one, am planning to take photograhphy lessons from Dale!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I love that last pic Dale. What is it?

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Hey everyone....

Shari, I have a housing and a Nikon for sale! I am looking to upgrade to a D1X and Subal housing. If interested, let me know.....absolutely great gear...just looking to upgrade.

Even the non frivolous things such as insects and plant deseases can be interesting reading when you don't have to actually deal with them so I will happily continue my support for your forum in my selfish desire for a great lurking spot ;~)

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Can supply images for quality assurance, kit comes with everything. this is not the place for this but Shari or any other underwater photographers that might be looking for a housed SLR can dmail me and get to posting images on here for our land locked commrades!!!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Yeah Zany!!!But you can't just lurk! Gotta jump in with comments and questions and help and exchanges.....isn't that what this whole site is about????? I don't know if we will ever get the forum, but we are sure making a lot of friends in this thread! It has sort of taken on a life of its own.

John, I'm sure its a great deal, but DH just bought new u/w camera and case a couple of months ago and LOVES it. So I'm gonna pass on this one, but maybe someone else will be interested.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

OK DAVE... what do ya say? Can these folk get their forum? Please?

North Augusta, ON

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Yes Dave, please, please, pretty please. Can we all have our forum? Everyone can contribute, lurks, admires, drools, dream, and a whole host of beautiful things to come.
Kim

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

LOL. You said it best Kim!!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I've just been reading the posts about internationalizing DG. It seems that there are a lot of people who think that the measurements, and language and....and.....and.....are all a hindrence to getting "international" interest. I'm afraid I don't see it. If I don't understand something, I ask. If I don't know that common name for a plant, I look it up and then share the common name I know it as. I love all the different ways of looking at things, it opens my eyes to new possibilities every time it happens. Through DG I now have e-mail pals all over the world, and if you keep in mind that no one is saying anything intentionally to hurt, then even misunderstandings can be quickly cleared up. I want to thank all of you who have participated in this thread for keeping it happy, politically INcorrect, full of challenges, questions, and differences.....wouldn't it be a BORING world if we were all the same???

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Absolutely, Shari you've expressed best. Miscommunication is easy, but clarification, and keeping an open mind for the world around us is such a wonderful gift. Since it open up a whole new perspective, understanding. If nothing else, it could be enlightening. :-)

Let's talk about gardening; I'll pick a topic. Everyone chime in, discuss some of our fav. tropical plants/fruits ect.
Guava,
Let's talk guava. Just the mention of it, my mouth is watering, hoping I can get my hand on one. It's not impossible here to have guava imported. But having a tree in the garden that you can just reach for one. Isn't that wonderful?
As I've learned recently though, guava can be grown successfully in various parts of the U.S. Includes my SE regions. Ton of people in SW too. Not to mention they're grown in Fla. This very topic could be an object of interest that many can benifit from. So those that have these fruits. Send me some, Stat. :)

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Funny, my DD and I were just (and I mean JUST) talking about guava. Logee's is selling a "tomato tree" the fruit of which is supposed to taste like a "custardy guava".....has us intriqued to say the least. I think she is going to order it just to see. I will keep you posted on how it does, AND how it tastes! We were commenting that we don't have any quava trees on the island. I'm not sure why, when we have so many other fruit trees, but I am going to start asking around. Best I ever had? On Moorea in Tahiti. Absolutely the BEST. But they don't export, and frowned when I asked if I could take a baby. These were such wonderful people that I didn't want to do anything to offend them, so I was a good girl, and have regretted it ever since. Ha!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Someone sometime, not too long ago, planted Strawberry Guavas here. They are now one of the MOST invasive pests!!! The trunks grow very close together and trying to get thru a forest of 'waiwi' is IMPOSSIBLE...SO dense! They come up wild all the time. I LOVE guava...planted a Beaumont Guava which are the best around here.

Ever have a good camombert cheese with guava paste (or jelly) on a toasted English muffin. TO DIE FOR!!!

Carol the Guava Nut

North Augusta, ON

Drooool :))

If nothing else, this new tropical forum will cause my keyboard to be cleaner......

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Oh three! LOL !! I can see that we will absolutely have to plan on a get-together somewhere! Maybe Carol's place?!? I'll bring papayas and breadfruit, and I make a killer quacamole! And I need to find the person who had the spicy strawberries....those I just gotta try. John, dear, will you bring some conch fritters.....pleeeeeeeese????
