I lost a lot of bulbs this past winter. I find hyacinths too strongly scented for me, but we lost a lot of daffodils. This is May 2006 .
I'm doing a little investigating of planting depths, what is too deep, what is just deep enough etc.

That's what I mean pix. They come back with only half a flower, etc. Look weird.
I swear by Gardens Alive! Bulb Fertilizer. I also use lots of organic stuff in the soil and plant the bulbs deeper than it says to plant them, deadhead the spent blooms and wait until the green leaves have been dead and brown for weeks before I cut them off. And I'm lucky.
That settles it. Gardens Alive, here I come.
I cut one stalk to bring in for the smell. I just love it.
Yep. They look fantastic. I think I can smell them from here. Mmmmmm...
That's recycled brick? It looks brand new. Nice!
Very nice Cat.
Thanks!
That's great, cat.

yank, I love that walkway! and the hyacinth! did you lay on your stomach to take the pic?
Yank..great job with the bricks!!!!! and you hyacinths are lovely!
Cats love to lay on their stomachs!
I love your white hyacynth.
As soon as exams are over, I am going to go crazy and take photos of the yard. I want to show you where I want to plant white hyacynths.
Thanks for all the compliments. I just held the camera at ground level and clicked the button. Re: the walk - the bricks were recycled but I had professionals lay them - so it cost a pretty penny by the time I was done - but it does look very nice. Now if the rest of the yard would co-operate. . .
I want a brick pathway so badly.
Sofonisba, DH and I put in this pathway using a mold we bought from Lowes for $14.95. At the time they also had a mold for a brick pathway. You could just colour the cement and pour. We never did anything fancy like put six inches of sand down or anything. We just dug down slightly where we wanted the path and did it.
Seandor - that looks really good. I have one of those molds and the little roly-poly cement mixer to go with it. I need a lot more paths and don't have the money to have any more professionally done. Hmmmmm *brain rattling*
How long did take, Seandor?
Seandor, that's REALLY nice!!! I've never seen one of those molded cement paths look so nice. And you did it without the laborious preparation? You give me hope!!!!!! Thank you, thank you!
Well, I had DH help me - so I think we had most of it done on a Saturday, and finished up on Sunday.
Yank I love the brick.... really cool.... love the hyacints too.... none that I planted last year came back... and I only have 2 tulips... they look so skinny and malnourished... I think they are on the wrong place... too close to roses...
Love the walkway Michaela, I need something like that for the turtles new area... I am starting this weekend when my sister gets here... it will be a project for me and my nephews...
I am leaving 2 flower beds for the kids to plant anything they want... well I am giving them some seeds and let's see if it comes out... just for fun... I am planting strawberries for Victor ( I can't barelly wait to see him on Sunday!!!!!) and some other things for Alec... and tomatoes etc.... oh it will be fun (I hope!)
Oh am I invited for Sunday??!
Victor - you are shameless!
OK, all you rascals. Page 12 has been started. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/721528/
I'll try to join in more.
