Maybe dead people could vote on other dead people.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Funny - but probably not a bad idea.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Dave, did you really mean 'on'?? Yuck!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Well, only the short ones.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

"Today's dead people stand on the shoulders of all those great dead people who preceded us!"

Have my work cut out for me - had 30 Clematis delivered yesterday and about 15 shrubs / small trees today! Have to do the Clematis first.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor! What will you do with 30 clemantis??? How big is your garden? I only have room for one. :-(

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Sounds like it's going to be beautiful Victor! I have a dozen or more clematis ordered as well. I'll grow most along my fence and what's left, I'll grow on free standing obelisk type towers. I gotta make 'em first! They're too expensive to buy.

The clematis haven't arrived yet, but I do have tons of poppies, peonies, astilbe, phlox, asiatic lilies, cannas waiting to be planted... can't remember what else. Gotta get going before they dry out!!

Harper

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

wow... Victor your passion with clematis mirrors mine with roses.... the past 3 days all the JP roses arrived... 21 roses in my garage... and 16 minis... all in my bedroom.... I just hope nothing arrives tomorrow.... I have only 6 clematis to plant... but on the other hand I have tons of other annual climbers.. I just can't resist... morning glories, cardinal climber, black eye susan, cup and saucer, and moonflower .... probably 10 of each!!!! so I am going to be giving away some...

Harper, I found some obelisks for a good price... I have to make some... any special easy way to do it???

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I plant most of them at the base of shrubs. I might have one or two just scramble on the ground. Maybe only one for a makeshift trellis.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Kassia, nope. No special way. I was just gonna wing it. Where did you find some at a good price?

Victor, have any photos of how they'll look scrambling on the ground? I'm interested.

Wow, Kass, those are great prices! Thanks!

I don't like obelisks - too phallic for me. Now, have these name changes been finalized? BigCityDoug and Al47? I like fences with plants cascading from them. Not that I have any. yet, but I do like them. You notice how crazy we're all getting? From lack of real Spring. Absolutely.

Don't forget about me - bigcitykitty! The gas company is going to come and put in a gas hook-up for me and tear up my front yard. I told them not to touch the tulips! Do you think that they will pay attention? (The gas company - not the tulips, Al)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Quoting:
Do you think that they will pay attention?

That is really up to you now isn't it BCK. Did you instruct them to tiptoe?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

BCK, from my experience when I had folks come to install a fence, they ignored my request to leave the tulips be... (tiptoe). If I could do it over again, I'd stand next to them with a pitchfork and a megaphone barking orders for them to stay away from my precious plants!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

That is it then - I'm taking the day off work when they come to protect my tulips. It is more than just tulips - under the tulips are lillies! I told them that I would dig the ditch myself - gee I hope they don't take me up on that. . .

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Make them do it. I think it's smart that you'll be there watching.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Harper, here is a shot of Ramona scrambling.

I love it!! Ramona, come and ramble some over here!

Thanks Victor

You can grow clemantis on the ground? Like a ground cover?

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor, that is so pretty. I wonder why more people don't grow it that way.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I think it's because it doesn't fill-in like a ground cover. But they can also ramble between and up your other plants giving them complimentary color or color when the other plant is not in bloom.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Victor - that is beautiful. You certainly have a way with clemantis.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't call it a ground cover per se. To me a ground cover is a densely growing mass of plants that effectively becomes a carpet that smothers out weeds. I am still in pursuit of the best ones.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Update on my solar project. Three panels left to go up, final hook-ups, two inspections and I'm good to go.

Wow, you did that fast! good for you. we should have gone that way when we built our house.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

So who believes we're getting the mother of all Nor'easters tomorrow and Mon. I think it's a lot of hot air. Like when they predict three inches of snow and we get 3/4" of rain instead. Me, I'm on The African Queen with Bogie and Kate, on a river called DENIAL!

I downloaded instructions for an ark and my kids are busy.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey Carrielamont! I'm with you! Denial is the only way to go!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's where my ark may end up - de Nile!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Ouch! oooohhhh, that was bad, VG. :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Here's a seg to the other thread - do I take two wives???

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Well today was beautiful in Southern CT. I got a lot done plus I went on a "garden walk" at my favorite nursery. She picks a theme and you follow her around her gardens learning stuff. It's free.
Today was companion planting and she bases it on 3 variables:
1) What the plant requires in terms of sun/shade, wet/dry, lean/rich soil and acidic/lime, etc. Plants may look great together but if these factors aren't considered they wont last
2)aggresive growth / slow or no growth and the compatibility of mature size.
3) finally, color texture, time of bloom etc.

Nothing earth shattering in this, but I liked having it all laid out.
But I always pick up little gems. Most blue-green plants & silver like lime.
Anyone else feel their scabiosa (which gets praise for constant blooming) underperforms? They like lean soil. As does Sedum Autumn Joy (or else it flops) and anything alpine.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool. Nice to get free informative tours like that.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Two wives on the ark? - well two of everything I suppose.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Victor, your solar panels rock!! Nice going... now the color of your house? I dunno 'bout pink...

Dave, thanks for taking us on your tour!

It was beautiful in Glens Falls yesterday but didn't get anything done outside. Went to a craft fair and shopped for my grandson's birthday party instead. As for the weather, I guess we get what we get. We're right on the border here for snow or rain so it's hard to forecast. My daughters have a big birthday party planned today for the little guys first birthday. Some are coming from out of town. I hope the weather doesn't get too bad for the travelers or there will be lots of food left over. Here's a photo of what I should be doing outside. I am digging up millions (maybe billions) of orange daylilies and going to put in another flower garden. I'm not sure how far down the bank I will be going, but may just plant on top for now. I have a long way to goooooooooo!

It is raining fairly lightly here this morning. I still have strawberries that need to be dug up and either put into their new bed or found new home for with friends and the people I work with who garden - so the rain is cramping my style! Moved bush cherries and a mystery bush/tree into new places yesterday in preperation for the gas company tearing things up with a back hoe. I've decided that I'm going to take the day off and stand in my tulip bed to protect them while the crew is here. Had to take down the little stone retaining wall that my friends built me last year because it is in the gas line path. Grrrrr. Went by Ocean State Job Lots yesterday and they have garden stuff in stock! Got one of those nifty metal rakes that adjust to fit the size of the job for $4.50. They have lots of rose pillars and trellises at really good prices, too. I always buy my gardening gloves there - good prices. And chocolate - they always have interesting chocolate. Went by my favorite deconstruction site and brought friends a bucket full of snow drops to plant in their yard. Some of the crocus I gave them two weeks ago are blooming. I broke down and ordered crocus for my own yard from TulipWorld since they have crocus that fit in my color scheme.
