It's VERY hard to see the eggs in the stones. Here's one of them checking out the pool cover. The male & female look alike. Last year when we took the cover off the pool, one of them (DH swears it was the male) kept coming over and looking over the side. We call mom & dad Lucy & Ricky because they are so loud they sound like they are arguing all the time. and they run up & down the new rock wall on the rose garden. free show LOL

oh I totallly aggreee with the names.... they have a south american personality!>>>

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

how gorgeous an egg! You're allowed to photograph it? I thought it was one of those CIA type things, if we let you see it, we'd have to kill you!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

well, we had eggs in the parking lot and we put a sign so people would see and not park close to the eggs... it was so interesting how many people stoped, tried to feed them and was really carefull not to disturb the eggs... then one weekend and they were all gone!!!!

I've been passing out strawberry plants at work this week. (They took over the backyard that I want to use for growing other things now.) I gave four plants to one woman for her strawberry planter. Talking to her about them, I realized that she had never seen a strawberry growing! She probably has advanced degrees and has never been exposed to something as basic as how plants grow! I have to go find her a picture and send it to her in a minute. But I'm getting more and more scared for the future all the time when I realize the shallowness of "our" connection to the earth that supports us.

Bridgeport is having it's first big item trash pickup in almost 20 years. On my street alone, the piles going out (two weeks early) are astounding. The utter waste of resources is staggering and I was planning to put out my own pile - I am just as guilty.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

sad news today...the next morning the egg was gone. a predator must have gotten it. I'm guessing a fox or snake. there was not even a bit of shell left. the parents have moved on, hopefully to a safer location.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Awe, thats so sad! It would of been nice to watch them hatch and learn to run up and down like their parents. LOL

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh no..... poor birds.... that's sad....

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

:-((

I wonder, do the parents remember that they once had a beautiful egg? Can they make another one this year?

my thoughts are with you during this time of sorrow, Gram.

x, C ::::::::::::(

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Gram, I'm sorry about the egg being stolen. Yankee, I'm even more sorry that you may be right about human shallowness toward the Earth that supports us. : (

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Harper, I agree. the first is just nature, the second is truly sad.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Could the big trash pick-up have grabbed the egg?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Dave, do you think a big trash pick up in Bridgeport could have affected an egg in upstate NY? Wow, this global climate change stuff is more serious than I thought!

I just figured out something else. I thought there were 2 stones on my pool cover. It must have been killdeer eggs because those are gone, too. I don't know what the he-double-hockey-sticks goes on my back yard at night, but if some woodland creatures are playing bocce with the killdeer eggs on my pool cover it's got to stop. It's just not fair to the killdeer.

Dave, you can relax. Al's back. Some of the lame humor burden has been lifted.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Killdeer have just got to get smarter - like cowbirds and lay their eggs in other birds nests.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Good one Carrie. Dave, what were you thinking???

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Some of my tulips this beautiful morning : )

It could happen ;)
Gram, I thought those were eggs in the picture you posted!
We don't have killdeer around here but it's annoying cousin the killjoy.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Peony tulips are the best. Just watch out for squirrels knock the heads off of them!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh, okay! I just bought some of those wire holders for them because their heads are so heavy. When it rains, they droop.

Thanks Yankee Cat.

Hey All!

Back from Mickeyland. Had a great time but happy to be home. Wow, what a difference a week makes!! Lots of flowers and foliage in the garden. Have to get out tomorrow and do some work & take some photos. Hope everyone is well and is enjoying the Spring. It was HOT in Orlando. 90-ish every day. A few days were very humid. What a relief to come back to this.

Regards,
Victor

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Welcome home Victor!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Hey Victor! Welcome back! Did Mickey treat you well?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey Victor! We missed you!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks all! Yes, Mickey was very nice to all of us. The kids had a blast - it was their first time. There were quite a few attractions that were too intense for one or both of them, but there is so much to choose from. We chartered a boat and watched the Magic Kingdom fireworks from a great vantage point - and without crowds!

How are your gardens? Amazing what one week brings. Only a few daffs are still unopened. After the searing heat in FL this is such a relief. We have a frost warning in the Hudson Valley for tonight. Doubt my area will get that low though. That's why I don't do tropicals and tomatoes, etc., until mid-May. Take care.

Regards,
Victor

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Hey, Victor, glad you had a good time. perennials are popping up like crazy here, but I'm having to water because there has been no rain.

I've got my first tulips. Angelique

Mmmm, that's a beautiful one Gram.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

My daffs are fading, chinondoxa is gone. Tulips, muscari, bleeding heart, pulmonaria, hellebore, epimedium, spice viburnim are all in bloom with my later daffs.
On the wildflower end, bloodroot and dutchmen's britches are giving way to a ton of trout lilies and jack-in-the-pulpit.(And, of course, dandelions and violets. I like the violets in my lawn)
I planted a bunch of daylilies and lilies yesterday along with some hosta, crocosmia , an agapanthus, dahlias, pineapple lilies and a climbing lily. This is my second time planting crocosmia and first with pineapple liliy, climbing lily & agapanthus. I hope they do well and are hardy enough.

David, David, where are the pics?

I planted some hellebores this week that Tammy from PA sent me (volunteers from her garden)...thanks Tam!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yeah, David. Where are the pics? It sounds so beautiful!!!!

Here's one of my cherry tree.

Last night of school - except for the Final in a week. Woohoo! Now I can dig in the dirt every night after work!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gram, beautiful tulip!
Sofonisba, gorgeous cherry tree. I need one...OK I WANT one!
Here's one of my hyacinths in bloom if MSMC it's "Delft Blue"....what ever the name it smells so good!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Mmmmmm, I love the hyacinth smell. I can't just leave them in the ground. I gotta pluck them to put a bouquet on my desk.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Are hyacynth difficult to grow? I have some rather garish yellow tulips in the front garden that I have detested since DH planted them in 2002. I would like to replace them with white hyacynth, but they seemed tricky to grow - Are they?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Mine grow very well. The white ones have multiplied since I planted them 3 years ago.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks! I will make sure I order some this fall :-)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

They have some lovely colors now....I recently saw some yellow and peach colored ones planted along with the blue/purples and it was stunning!
I have this light pink and then some darker pink ones too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They don't return reliably for me.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

What's your trick, AYankeeCat? Pixie?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No trick here......they do need to be planted at a certain depth, but the only thing I do is give them bulb food and they have come back. This is year # 3 or 4 for them. Now my dark pink ones are planted in a different spot and they did not "fill out' like the rest but they are also 4-5 yrs old and I think I missed them when I was feeding the rest.
Here's what I mean about not filling out.
