OOooooohhhh, Patti, I love 'Flaming Spring Green'! 'Rococo' is such a nice, sturdy one; I've never grown it, but worked with them as cut flowers and found them particularly nice. Which of your varieties have you found to be the most reliable perennials?
Hey, let's see those tulips!
Regarding the previous pic I posted, the white ones are "Montreux". They're Double Early and they're bloomed the day after the red "Miranda" tulips which are Double Late!
This pic shows some of the blooms that I planted in the fall when we moved into this new house; I ripped up a huge tangled, unkept veggie patch where these bulbs are now. In a few months we'll be doing work on the backyard and landscaping it. I'll have to move these bulbs to new spots among perrenials. The purple ones in the photo are "Blue Diamond".
Beautiful grouping!
Nice garden, Red.
Supreme pictures, Patti. I fancy Flaming Spring Green and Eyecatcher, too.
There, for one, is one I've found to be a good perennial-
Blue Diamond. More off the top of my head are Banja Luca, Helmar, Flair, (Temple of Beauty and her sports), Gavota, Pimpernel, and of course, the "species" tend to be much more perennial.
Here is 'Omnyacc' today
JamesCo , OMMMMMMnnnnnnnnnnn. Omnyacc is amazing. I hope mine open with such grandeur. I can't find a source yet for more Eye Catch. I ordered it last fall from Van Dyck's but I don't see it on their 2007 list. My return rate from last year has been disappointing. A few Banja Luka, Monte Carlo, a pink fringed NOID which you asked about last May. "Patti, who is the fringed Tulip? It is to die for.", plus that NOID orange one that I posted above in row 2 # 1 and the species tulips. I didn't have records for what was planted in the fall 0f 2005 so I am going back to look at old postings from last spring.
So, if I can't find more Eye Catcher can I dig and store this years after they yellow and plant again in the fall? I am heading out to see what today has brought out in the way of new narcissus and tulips. Patti
My garden actually got my neighbor to talk to me!! It's been 3 years I've lived here and this is the first peep. :D Flowers can make even shy people open up to each other. Some of these are starting to fade, but it's a mix of Bright Parrot, Davenport, Double Dutch, Flaming Parrot, Helmar, Little Princess, Orange Princess, Red Shine, Tinka
hyblaean, I love the fact that you wowed the neighbor into speaking. The dog likes them too! Which is the little orange one in front. Patti
Thanks, I remember seeing it and for some reason not ordering it. I did order 'Little Beauty', but I am more partial to orange than pink, so I will add it to my want list for next year. I love the species tulips. My 'Bright Parrot' has just opened but I didn't plant it in a very good spot, so it seems a tad overbearing. I will mingle it like you did for next year. Always "next year" Patti
Laugh, yup. I got the colorblends catalogue and thought I want this group and this group and this group and..... What did you plant last year? You have quite a collection! Did it grow, or do you pick a new batch every year? This is my first year planting, and I'm not sure how much to buy for next year, and what colors. How do most people deal with arranging them every year? How can you ever coordinate things not knowing what will return? :D and I love overbearing- the more gaudy the better!
I am wanting to plant tulips around the base of a tree in our front yard, possibly some red ones, along with some daffodils (a little shorter than the tulips), so they will all bloom at the same time. Any tips or suggestions? I have never grown either of them before.
Also, if I wanted to plant some tulips to grow inside, when do you plant them and how do you care for them?
Thanks,
Dana
Where do you guys find your awesome unique tulip bulbs??? Ive only seen a few varietys at Lowes and Home Depot. Is there a good website to order from?? I am going tulip crazy this fall and would love to add some nice unique varieties.
Also is there some info on how to spot a good bulb? Some of mine are questionable..
Diamond Lady - its starting to get late in the season but if you have a spare refrigerator you can still force tulips of the early blooming varieties or Triumph types. Last year I ordered some from Brent and Becky's end of season sale and successfully forced them. The end of season sale doesn't start till after Thanksgiving. I usually put 5 in a 6" pot. They are placed in the growing medium with the very tops not covered. Check periodically and water when necessary, being careful not to over water as they might rot. I usually force tulips of shorter stature as they tend to flop otherwise. The temp in the old frig I use is set at a colder setting.
AngelG1111 - check out this thread in the bulbs forum: Fall bulb sales when? Therein some top bulb suppliers are identified. These specialists will offer a good selection. If you live in too warm a zone Brent and Becky's site have pre-cooled bulbs.
