Woo-hoo, my camera works again! (Apparently it needed batteries?) So now I have pictures of seedlings. I welcome your suggestions; these are mostly NOID.
Annual sown 3-19

Anybody taking pictures of their sprouts?
Here's a view of the porch:
To the left of the plastic terra cotta pot with Sedum 'Matrona' in it, you can see a tray of 20 oz. plastic bottles. Eighteen fit perfectly in a standard 10 x 20 nursery flat. I don't put too many seeds in small bottles like that.

Pretty excited about these, they were among the first to sprout. Here's the PlantFiles page for Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Blue Mist'

I should have said "one of mine" or "part of mine".

:-( # of seeds sown > sprouts or germinated seeds
OH MY GOSH!!! WHERE are you going to plant that many seedlings? LOL That is just amazing!
Mike those Blue Mist are pretty, I think I have seed for those around here some where lol I haven't even got have my seeds sown yet... But will deffinately look for those...
I did a walk around the yard today, checked out my raised bed I put in last spring, I am sooo excited, what is sproutin in it, delphinium, blackeyed susan, my moms money bush (she had to grow it every year), Devon Cottage "Rosie Cheeks" Dianthus hybrid" (zone 7 - 11) but it came back, Late dutch honeysuckle, my clematis (said it was elsa spath) not sure if it is or not... plus a bunch more that I can't remember the names of... After the frost last night and them calling for snow next week, I hope they servive, but I am tickled that they all came back :o) I have one out there that is spreading everywhere, really going to have to thin that back if our weather doesn't kill it...

Every winter seems like a leap of faith, once you're too old for sledding!

i too use the large clear containers..i usually look around and find the cheapest ones..been using them for about five years..the only drawback is that the containers get brittle over time..say like in three years..
i dont drill holes in the tops because it rains too much here and it would flood inside..instead i vent..i take the top and place it upside down on the container and move it a bit aside so theres a little vent in case it gets too warm..sometimes i weigh down the top with a weight if its windy
works wonderfully for me as i dont have a greenhouse.
i also use these containers as propagation box for cuttings and such in warmer weather as it humidity is great in there..use smaller containers and put them inside
another use is a holding box for transplants that is too tender to put out just yet.
pamsue
Pamsue, it's funny you say that, because I was using the plastic storage bins that had cracked up after years of storing things in them...I just didn't have to bother with holes. S.O. wouldn't let me use the good ones...haha
Some of my plants are under an overhang (cantilever) of the house, and they still get some rain there, but if it pours and the gutters overflow, there is a dripline that I have to make sure the containers aren't directly beneath*. A jug of Rudbeckia seeds kind of got scrambled that way weeks ago and hasn't sprouted.
Here's a gratuitous blurry picture of Narcissus 'Avalanche':
*"From now on, ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put."
Winston Churchill
Claypa,
At least you know that beneath is a preposition.

logically i should put holes in the containers but i dont because of the rains and also the slugs..we have so many of them here..so its a gamble to leave out open containers of seedlings out. i close the lids early evenings when it starts to chill cuz thats when the slugs come out.
i do use the cracked containers for covering planted tomato transplants to protect them for awhile . thats my only use for them so far
Right Pamsue, that's what the Wintersowing site says a lot, the WS method is very adaptable to all different areas. I see you're from the land of giant slugs, I probably glanced at your location and thought of the 'other Dallas'. lol
Those slugs really scare me after seeing daisyruffles' thread a while back. I always have a few in the garden, no big deal but seeing what they can do to seedlings was a real eye opener. So much work and promise can be ruined so quickly.
There's an inch of water in my basement right now. There's talk of a major yard grading project this summer. Definitely a water garden opportunity. Preferably outdoors.
I tossed a cheap plastic painter's tarp over the jugs late last night, so they're ok. Two inches of rain so far here.
About half of my containers are showing growth. This is Rudbekia Sputnik.

Very nice, ln, very nice. I'm sure I have nothing that looks like your California poppies, but I planted some. ?&*@!

Are you starting to dry up there yet Carrie? I think you folks got more rain than we did... not too bad here really, 4"+, but showers are forecast all week.
Wow, lincolnitess, those are some amazing colors you have coming!!! Your Clarkia look pink already! Thanks for posting the links too... it made me go back and see what all the other sprouts posted will look like... Illoquin's Dichondra is really something too
...So many great plants... I went to a well known nursery near here before the rain started (Waterloo Gardens) and it really hit me that there was no way I could afford to buy even a small fraction of what the seedlings could work out to be. The money I spent on soil would NOT go too far towards plants in that place, but it is beautiful. I almost bought some plastic lids for nursery trays at $3 each but I didn't.
You guys have done an amazing job with your photos. I've taken pics of most of my seedlings, but since I harvested almost all the seeds myself many of them are labeled generically such as "orange daisy" or "purple spike". I don't think it would do much good to share them now, but I'm hoping I'll recognize some of them at the nursery and be able to give them a proper ID at that time.

Gosh, today was gorgeous! Not only have we dried off, it was so sunny that many of my WS containers are too dry. Guess I'll be watering soda bottles.

A while back JanetS asked...
OH MY GOSH!!! WHERE are you going to plant that many seedlings? LOL
Well this is their new home, most of them anyway. It's about 40' x 5'. . ... so far...
I have a few that germinatied, but I would say I failed. Thankfully I started back ups inside for most of my seeds and they are coming along nicely. I will try again next year. Patti
I planted some of mine out in the garden and I think they croaked..lol still have some of mine to plant though..not sure I will try again this year...maybe though.
Oh Patti, too bad! I had lots of things germinate and they're all getting bigger and bigger. They're starting to look like things, I'm just not sure what they look like. LOL. I'm sure things will be better next year.
xx, Carrie
Cord.... I looked in your journal and I hane some noids that look like some of your seedlings!!! Can we talk?
xx, Carrie
Yes, I'm so sorry I haven't opened this thread in a while.
Ginger, is that ginger lily?
No Cordeledawg ,
It's Canna Tropicanna .
Called Bengal Tiger on your side of the world .
Canna was going to be my second choice. I love them both!
