We had a frost advisory here last night but it didn't happen. I brought a couple plants in, I guess I shouldn't have bothered. Almost done with that new bed... might break another shovel! There are so many rocks but not too many that I could use for something, too small and irregularly shaped.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Lovely plant, Ginger. Great varigation!

Janet: You've got blooms on your ws plants!!! Totally awesome!!! Please start a new thread so everyone can see them and it doesn't get buried in a looong thread.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Shirley, I will be happy to start a new thread tomorrow...I am not home, so I wouldn't have pictures to post till then...but yes, I have petunias that are blooming...several and they are really pretty...can't wait to show them to you all. They are probably the only thing I have that will survive..lol I put the poppies and hollyhock in the graden and the heat wave zapped them into dirt..lol I went to water them the third day and could find them...they were toast..oh, well, nothing ventured nothing gained..lol I always have good luck with petunias...maybe I will just plant trays of those next year, so easy!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Claypa, sorry about the shovel and the blister! (I've got a few blisters from planting DLs yesterday, but at least my shovel survived.) Your new bed looks wonderful, and I can't wait to see it sporting an assortment of little plants!

Ginger, are you getting ready to try some wintersowing this year? ;-)

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

What does winter sowing mean ???
We have warm weather all year round !

Just took some Pics. of my cannas that I trimmed back to nothing 6 days ago .
I'll post them as soon as I transfer them to my Puter .

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Janet: I'm so sorry to hear about your Poppies & Hollyhocks frying in your garden. Heat & lack of water will quickly dessimate your sprouts. Perhaps, by adding a few polymer crystals to the planting hole will help to ensure moisture retention with your other seedlings. Hope your Petunias will bloom beautifully for you. I consider Petunias a staple in my Summer garden. Post your pictures whenever you are able. I'm looking forward to seeing them.

Claypa: YIKES! Breaking a shovel and your wicked blister are just some of the minor inconveniences that gardeners have to put up with. I currently have my 1st case of poison ivy from cleaning out & pruning my Spring garden. Oh well, this too shall pass!

ginger749: Welcome to the Winter Sowing Forum! We're so glad you joined us. The best website to learn all about wintersowing is at http://www.wintersown.org Also, be sure to read the "stickies" that are posted at the top of this forum after you have gone to the wintersown website. We'll be here to encourage you, answer your questions and help you as much as possible. You to will be a wintersower before long! The only difference is that you're seasons will be the opposite of ours. That's not a problem at all. The main thing is that you are learning the concept of wintersowing and applying it to your seeds. Best of luck to you!!

great picture! I do understand your love of your sport...I am quite envious too.

here's one of my faves... mainly because they are growing so nicely.

tcs,

they are so cute; I am so jealous. I've heard that if they seem to have lagged in their upward skyward growing, it means they are doing downward root growing. I dunno.

Cute seedlings, though.

ginger749: What a beautiful part of the world that you live in!

tcs1366: You have fantastic looking sprouts! You should be very proud of yourself!! Yes, germination can be erratic. That's why you shouldn't be to quick to toss your containers out. You might find some more "surprises".

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

thanks shirley.... we are just discussing that in the "what didnt germinate" thread... a few of us have no germination with datura.

the only containers i've emptied are the ones i found moldy seeds (sunflowers and mystery bean vine)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

here's one of my other faves.

yellow siberian iris. the purples are much slower growers. They seemed to germinate a month later than the yellow.

Dang. A year later, and I still don't quite get how to use my camera. I have a blue bowl full of red and white California poppy sprouts. I took a couple of pictures of the healthy weed free sprouts themselves, and then one of the bottom of the bowl where the roots are starting to poke out. My foolish camera only took one of these pictures: the one of the bottom of the bowl. So here it is. The seeds are sown quite thickly, and the bowl is only 5" - 6" deep. Should I thin them? Are they pot-bound? It is a lovely bowl.

Nice looking bunch of plants, Suzy! I saw your thread in Cottage Gardening, you sounded pretty frustrated but those don't look so tiny anymore. Hopefully not too fragile and small to plant out soon. Is that a recent picture?
It's supposed to be rainy off and on all week here so I hope to get the rest of mine in the ground soon.

Carrie, yellow poppies would look great in that blue pot, I'd be tempted to leave at least some in there. I guess it's big enough, I don't know.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Very nice group!!! You did a great job!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Claypa,

Yes, they're big enough to plant, but it will be a month before they bloom (on the annuals) and I'm getting sick of planting all these little babies. Really sick of it! I have been planting for about 3 hours every day for the last month. Teeny tiny little plants. All I can say is they better reseed because this is my last year of doing this (both wintersowing and planting millions of annuals)

What really brought it home was going to Lowes and seeing what they had blooming in 4" pots for $2.95. LOL! I was sort of sick after seeing it.

LOL.... I totally understand where you are coming from....I thought the same thing after I babied mine and planted them and watched them vaporize into thin air...lol But it is something I wanted to try and now I have..lol

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Just bringing this back to the top .... seeing all the seedlings gets ya excited about Spring !!
Plus a lot of great photos.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

No sprouts yet this year - not even done planting what with one thing and another..... but thanks for bumping!

OK sprout-sters! I started a new "Sprouts and Seedlings" thread for 2008 in the link above.

So everyone who is finding sprouts, please take a pic, label them with any germination info, and post it on the new thread.

And while you're at it, please post it on Plant Files too. (If you need help with how to do that, just ask one of the Admins, they are happy to oblige.)

Good luck with your Wintersowing! t.
