Dr. Don - WELCOME HOME!!!!!

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Just FYI for those of you in the colder zones. Baltimore was cited as a colder place where these rain lilies will grow. Baltimore has I think been listed as zone 7 and apparently is listed as zone 8 in the 2003 hardiness map. It's a lot warmer than it is even here in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Hope I'm not too late!

Thanks, JLMK,

Deborah

Coaling, AL(Zone 7b)

I've been wanting to try these! If you still have some, I'd love some. LMK and I'll send you an envelope... Elizabeth

Am I too late? I'd love to have one. thanks!

It is true that the coldest I've seen them left in the ground is actually Baltimore, MD. which I believe is USDA zone 6b-7a. Yet for those of you who choose to grow this plant in colder zones certainly can try them next to a warm rock, mulch heavily during the winter, or simply dig them as if they were dahlias or any other tender plant. I'm always rather put off by naysayers, as there is certainly a "nothing ventured, nothing gained aspect to gardening. Any successes one has outside of a "zone" should be regarded as a fabulous achievement in horticulture. What would gardening be if Gertrude Jekyll only stuck to plants that the establishment said would "grow in England". We'd be a lot poorer without her adventuresome and creative spirit.

As a confirmed "zone denier", I've grown papayas, orchids and all kinds of tropicals here in 8b, with terribly low humidity, I can heartily attest to the great joy of gardening with plants that experts tell me cannot possibly be grown here. Anyone visiting this thread who'd like to try them will indeed get them with my highest hopes for their success without judging them or their logic.

the very best of luck to all who wish to grow these and use the small amount of my home-spun vermicompost in the planting pits when you plant them with my compliments.

DRDON!!!! HOWDY!!! So glad to see you're back!!! Look forward to seeing your posts on the cacti & succulent forum. I wish I'd been able to meet you and Pam when you were up this way last year. I'm so glad your DW's back on her feet and doing so well, and that you're back among us. If you get up this way again, please let me know.

I hope to come to the RU this year, but not sure yet.

Marilyn

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks drdon, I have seen you around, but I am just a lurker in most forums. But couldn't resist your offer. Rest assured the bulbs will have a good home here.

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

hiya pekasky!!

great to see you!

I'm slowly winding my way back into all of my favorite forums, but this bulb offering is an annual thing that I was getting a few dmails on and needed to do. Pam is doing much better and setting up the second ranch took a while but now it seems as though the new staff is working fine and I'm now cleared by the boss lady to hang out at DG again....lol.

You should go to the California Gardening forum and check out how many northerners are coming down for the 3rd annual DGRU here at our primary ranch.

the best to you,
don

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Don:

I remember when you did the Zephyranthes thing last year. Sure wish I could grow them, but I just don't have the environment - too much maritime influence and too cool. They don't even do well up at the Garden. Can't see wasting a good plant when someone else can grow it on much better than I can.

I didn't know you were setting up a second ranch - is it near where you live now? I didn't know about your horse either. I was so sorry to hear about him.

I know lots of people have already said it, but you have no idea how much you were missed here at DG. Your upbeat, positive attitude is always needed. I know it was probably difficult to maintain the last several months, but I'm glad to see both you and Pam have come through most of your travails.

Want to bet I can name most of the people from here who're coming to the RU? We have quite the group, don't we? I'll have to check it out and see how close I am. Maybe I can hook up with someone up here and carpool down. That sure would save some $$$$.

Talk to you soon!

Okie dokie, looks like this one is closed for the season. Now I will give everyone 14 days to get me an envelope or I'll offer to someone else. It's one of those fairness things that I believe in. When I receive your envelope I will notify you on this thread with the date your package went out in the mail from me. I hope that all of you enjoy these fabulous plants and that they give you as much joy as they have given us here over the years.

Best to all,
don

My envelope went out this morning too.......Thanks drdon!!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I was able to catch the mailman Saturday, Drdon. Thank you!

Pasco, WA(Zone 6b)

How do we pay for postage and how much? Do I just address the bubble envelope to you? Do I put the stamps inside the envelope? Sorry, I'm a little confused. If I address the envelope to you, then how do you use it after that, since it will already be used?
Thanks
Sherry

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

If you include a label with your name and address, DrD can just stick that label on the BE and re-use it.

Near the top of the thread, he said to send at least a 5x7" bubble envelope, and that "postage is normally less than 3bucks, but normally around 1.85." Remember that you need to send loose postage; the post office won't accept a prepaid metered label for the envelope's return trip. Also remember that it costs 52 cents to send the BE to DrD (13 cent nonmachinable surcharge).

Just trying to help out! :-)

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Dr D - I sent mine out this morning and when I got home I found the note I meant to put inside...drat...anyhow it was a 'thank you'!!

Pasco, WA(Zone 6b)
