Rats! I forgot that we would have to do the clock thing all over again in April. Rats!! Now is not the time to have clocks all over the place!
Worked my backside off outside today - felt good. May not walk tomorrow, but for today, I enjoyed it. This was just cutting back, trimming off bad stuff, and pulling weeds. Have a little more than half to do yet. And then I'll want to start hitting the nurseries! Yes!!!!
The Texas Mountain Laurel is starting to bloom - grape koolaid fragrance - I love that plant. The Narcissus and Sweet Olives are blooming too, and the fragrance is so wonderful. Nice to be outdoors...Sound effects were provided by the Purple Martins. The females are arriving and it is happy time.
Gotta go take my shower.
Pull Up a Chair XXI
Oh...,my mountain laurel is blooming too. That's one of my favorite trees. Wish it bloomed all year.
You gotta read this:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/700288/
I've seen that before. It's hilarious!
My mom just left. I made a spaghetti dinner for my friend with cancer and her family so we had it too. Mom loves spaghetti. I don't. She made me eat it too often as a child. It's generally the last thing I ever want to eat.
The kids are out of school for spring break. No peace and quiet for me for a week. I'm just going to hide in the garden. One day next week I plan to take a load of kids out to the strawberry farm and let them pick to their hearts content. We'll come home and make strawberry shortcake, strawberry preserves, strawberry bread, strawberry pancakes, strawberry lemonade and I'll just freeze the rest. It's a fun little tradition we do every year during Spring Break. I have no clue how I'm going to occupy the rest of the week.
That sounds like fun, knolan. I used to take the kids to
an apple orchard where they could pick to their heart's content,
then we'd buy a case of fresh taffy apples at the farm, come home
and make pies and apple sauce, etc... Sometimes we'd drive up
to Michigan and pick peaches or blueberries. I'd also buy several
bushels of Red Haven peaches and can those. Mmmm, delicious !
Of course, none of this was during Spring break - there's nothing
growing yet up North at that time of year.
I used to take them to see a play, or to the Museum of Science and
Industry, one of their favorites, and some days we'd just go to the
original Dove's Ice Cream Parlor, which was only 3 blocks away.
Heck, they used to go there on their own. Poor old man Dove.
The kids promised him that they absolutely would not sell the business
when he died, but the first thing they did was sell off the name and
everything else to Mars, the candy people. You could get an ice cream
bar, a Dove bar, that was almost 2 inches thick and dipped in chocolate
at least 5 times. The ones they call Dove bars now are a pitiful copy.
The old man would cry for sure if he ever tasted one.
Those sound like great memories, Mahnot. But sad about the ice cream shop.
I think ya'll are all out at a ball and didn't invite me. Whaaaa? I have a pretty dress.
They are all out trying to figure out what time it really is.
Some of us are trying to catch up on reading all the threads - I only missed one day for Heaven's sake, but it's going to take hours!
Ceejay, I read Poisonwood Bible and appreciated the writing skill, but the story really dragged me down. BTW, you are the first person I've met who read (or started) Prodigal Summer and didn't like it - you hold a unique position!!! Your kitty story had me in stitches!! My gray cat, Bigfoot, is the one who gets me up early - if he can find newspaper on the floor (thanks a heap, DH), he will shred it in an attempt to waken me. Otherwise, he'll just shred his scratching boards - loudly. He wants me to get up and feed him, but usually isn't really interested in the food - wants me up, period. And wants to go out. Margie would stay curled up on the bed with me all day. Friday is closed off in the laundry room (her private domain) - otherwise, she'd be snuggled with me OR flying around the house getting into trouble.
Kristi, your daughter and her friends are lucky that you make plans for them to do things. I was always either doing daycare in my home or working outside the home. So the kids had to entertain themselves. Love that your little froggie friend is back!!
Mahnot, do you have gardens at your place AND at your daughter's that you are trying to take care of? That sounds monumental to me - I can't even get through my own stuff!! You have an amazing amount of energy, it seems.
Meezer, hope your snow disappears soon and you can enjoy some decent weather. We've had a few good days, but not nearly enough.
Fly, I've not seen Marie Antoinette and from the sounds of it, I won't bother!!
Twlya, enjoy your day and your week, too!
Yesterday was the Island County Master Gardener's Workshop - it was delightful, as always. I enjoyed all three classes I signed up for, but most of all the one taught by Allan Mandell, a superb garden photographer. His photos were so beautiful some of them actually made me cry. I could have listened to him all day and looks at his images. He would show little slide shows, set to music, and everyone was mesmerized. He's rather quiet, but his passion for photography comes through loud and clear. And he wants to share his knowledge so others can experience that joy as well. He's teaching a four day class here on the island in June, but I'm not ready for such an intense experience - don't know enough about my camera as yet. But one of these days!!!!! His website, if you're interested, is www.gardenphotographer.com
The other two classes I took were "Functional Garden Art" (or something like that) and Plant Propagation. Both were fine, but the photography class was first, so nothing else could possibly have compared. However, I enjoyed them and took away ideas or knowledge from both.
I think my computers are the only thing that I don't change the time on manually - and I'm not going to try to figure out how to do it!!!
I'm off to do the dishes - oh, boy. At least they were all rinsed off before they were left in the sink or piled on the drainboard. Thanks again, DH and DSS. Anyone heard of emptying the dishwasher and putting dishes inside???!!!
Good-whatever-it-is-with-the-time-change-now.
Murmur, what beautiful photography ! Thanks, I really enjoyed
looking at his work. Must have been really stunning to see it
on a larger scale. Sounds like you're very busy these days.
Hope your mom and dad are fine. No news of your sister-in-law,
so that must mean things are going well for her.
I'm trying to restore and add on to the garden that was once here
and starting up on a very small scale at my daughter's house.
Right now, it's mostly watering the pots and trying to keep things
alive. I put in a few rose bushes for her last year and we'll see
how they're doing, but two of the silver lace vines I planted on her
fence have died because her dog lifts his leg on them. :o(
I'm scaling way back on my plans for here because I have realized
that I have neither the time nor the energy to do so much.
Besides, she's getting worse and I'm getting older - not a good
combination for taking on more work in the gardens. Add to that
the fact that I can't take the heat down here, plus the droughts in
summer, and I figure that I have to go for low maintenance and
big pots. I found out the hard way that "full sun" does not mean
Texas sun - it means afternoon shade, of which there is little here.
Knolan, they closed the ice cream shop when they sold to Mars,
and it's now a real estate office. I hate it when neighborhood
landmarks disappear. You can hardly give directions to anyone
that way any more. The section of roadway near me that was once
called Grapevine Highway is now Hwy. 26. What idiot thought that
was a better name change? It's still the same road, only they're going
to widen it. Maybe the mayor's brother-in-law owns a company that
makes street signs, and I'd say LOL here except that it isn't funny.
Haven't read any of the books you're talking about here as I rarely
read anything written after WW II. I love the classics, history and biographis,
and biblical studies, so I guess I'm just a fuddy-duddy who enjoys her dusty
old books, but I am eagerly waiting for Harper Lee's new book and hope
it comes out soon.
At noon, my computer switched to actual time by itself, but the Real Player
is not working properly yet and a "Sorry" message comes up from some
cave in the mountains where Internet Explorer hides their stuff.
I'm so glad Meezersfive has such confidence in us. :o)
Ceejay, I hope you're able to move today. I looked up Texas Mountain Laurel -
beautiful ! Think I'll get one for my daughter. I don't like the smell of grape
Kool-Aid, LOL, so it's not for me, but I can enjoy it at a safe distance by her.
Hope everyone is well and having a lovely day today. I'm off to sweep and
mop and mope. Ciao for now. Where the heck is everybody anyway?
((((( Bama ))))))
At church! ;-D
I really like historical novels, and biographies, and books about southern eccentricities. Poisonwood Bible was an historical novel - very interesting to me. I equate Prodigal Summer with The Bridges of Madison County - and didn't finish it either. Different strokes... But we both love gardening and birds!!
Thanks, K - for the information. I can take it now.
I noticed the computers changed times, as did all of the atomic clocks. So did the DVR. We don't use the VCRs anyway, so we won't change those. Only had to change the grandfather clock and a few others. Anyway, we won't have to readjust anything in three weeks after all. Kind of a mini-millenium scare...
Murmur - The laundry room is where we put Sunday for time out. Can't put her there at night - wouldn't want her to think she was being punished. But then again, I'm not sure that cat knows when she's being punished. It's all just one big game.
Speaking of Sunday (the day) - it's time for my Sunday nap. See y'all later...

Golly, gee, everybody must still be napping !
Wha hoppen?
Just had the dogs out. It's raining - finally !
If you haven't asked for your Telephone Excsice tax back yet, don't forget to do it:

I haven't heard from the farmer with the blue eyes. Hmmm.
Maybe I'll just check Angie's List and look for somebody else
to get this yard work done. Oh, well.
Garage Sale Season has begun here in earnest. I saw at least
7 of their signs today, and an estate sale. Couldn't figure out why
there was so much traffic. Silly me.
Talked to my youngest daughter today. She went to a family wedding
on her DH's side yesterday. Very unusual. Both the bride and groom
are avid outdoorsmen and for their honeymoon, they are going boar
hunting in Texas.
The bride, who is 4 x 4, wore a traditional gown. The groom and all
the groomsmen wore a tux, cowboy hats and boots, a camoflage cumberbund
and a fishing lure in their buttonhole. The placecard holders were empty bullet
casings, and I hear the groom was grinning from ear to ear the whole time.
I would'a loved to be there, LOL. Whatever turns you on, I guess. Did I mention
this was in Chicago? Cowboy country? I'm not criticising, I'm just reporting. :o)
I always thought of a wedding as the most formal occasion most people would
ever attend in their life. I guess not.
"Are you lonesome tonight?
Do you miss me tonight?
Are you sorry we drifted apart?
Does your memory stray
To that bright summer's day
When I kissed you and called you Sweetheart?
Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?
Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?
Is your heart filled with pain?
Shall I come back again?
Tell me, dear, are you lonesome tonight? "
Was that Elvis? I sure hope so.
Well, as I am not in the habit of talking to myself, I shall bid you
all adieu, ta ta, ciao for now, see ya later , alligator.
I'm outta here.
((((((((Bama))))))))
Hope you all have a productive and satisfying week. It's back to
work, ya know.
There's nothing more romantic than empty shell casings!
Mahnot, you're up early or late:)
Cats are so amazing! I've mentioned how my little babies get a 3pm snack every day, yesterday was no exception, being the weekend and all. So, about 2:30 they are sitting in the 'snack' spot, waiting. I mention to DH how do they know it's almost time with the time change and all, because technically it was only 1:30. My DH, in all his infinite wisdom, says.....'Duh, we have clocks all over the place'. hahahaha
It's raining here finally, it's been so dry.
M, Mr Mandell's website was amazing, quite an inspiration.
K, love the froggies, haven't seen mine yet, the cute little anoles are out and my ribbon snake. He's already doing laps in the pond, and that water is cold!
Ours seem not to have noticed the clocks. They were an hour late with their "Where's Breakfast" complaints. Don't tell them. I don't mind sleeping in.
Mine were late, too, PTL - I didn't have to get up until 6:03!!!!
Yesterday was so windy it was incredible - we lost power for six hours, then about 11:00 last night it went out again for a short while. But the temperature was 64 and it was a combination of cloudy and sunny. We lost power a bit the day before, too.
Ceejay, Friday just automatically heads for the laundry room at night when I have their little dishes of food ready, so I figure as long as she's wanting to go there, why not? LOL - goofy cat. When I'm gone for the night, DH doesn't put her in there at all so it's just a routine she and I have. When we first got her, we put her in there for her own protection - she was so tiny.
Fly, glad you enjoyed Allan Mandell's website - wish there was a better way for me to share what he expressed. And, of course, at the workshop his images were on a large screen - and lovely music as well. So the impact was phenomenal.
Time for my coffee.
Hello everyone.. have great day..
wedding sounds fun..if bride is 4X 4 how can she trapise around hunting and hope never mind.. or did mean 4x4 as something else like ??think i'm brain dead kids drove me crazy and i thought none today but they are here oh fun fun..
thinking of you all. blessings..
Twyla
Twyla, you must have the patience of a saint, I think I would go hide in the woodshed and pretend I wasn't home when they showed up. I don't know how you do it.
Hello. I'm out the door.
Hope you all have a good day.
One of my mother's friends was telling how they had a cat
that moved from the country to the city with them. After a while,
the cat disappeared. With a straight face, he maintained that
it was because the cat couldn't read the numbers on the houses
that it got lost.
Ciao for now. Errands up the wazoo. Rained all night, more rain
on the way. Goody, goody. Bye ..............

Fly - You have a funnee DH! LOL!
Murmur - That was awesome! The Northwest Pacific tour we took was the reason my DH decided to become a Master Gardener. It was so outstanding and he was so inspired by the beauty of it. We toured some homes on Bainbridge Island - and Little & Lewis, Seattle, WA, Victoria and Vancouver. Heronswood was another joy - now gone, and so sad. We visited a Japanese Garden and a Chinese Garden in Vancouver too. I highly, highly recommend them. Did you notice that pyramid of bowling balls?! I have to wonder where they got all of those!
Serendipity!! I was trying to locate my NW Pacific tour stuff to review which private gardens we visited, and found a light meter for a camera. I don't remember buying it, but I did buy a Pentax SLR back in the '80s, and maybe I bought this at the same time. Probably. I wonder if it still works. I wonder how to use it.
And now back to work on my program. I wonder why I agreed to do it.

Hope everyone's day was great and ya'll got all your errands done and programs worked on. I had a house full of kiddos and we weren't able to do too much fun stuff today but the rest of the week should be different.
So much for the traditional strawberry picking. I looked up their website and because of the last freeze, there are no berries at this time. I'm totally bummed. So, instead, tomorrow we're packing a picnic and heading down to the Museum of Natural Science for the tree frog exhibit. I'm so glad it's still going on. The butterfly exhibit is included....that'll be nice because that's where DH and I met. So romantic. If it's rainy, we'll just eat our picnic in the museum. That'll be two days down, three more to go. Gotta think up ideas. If I were rolling in the dough (which I'm not), I'd take them all to the rodeo carnival. Nothing better than a good puke ride. Looks like I'll have 6 kids tomorrow.....no problem, they entertain each other.
I spent all of yesterday planting, cleaning beds, tilling compost in, getting twine on the fences for the vines and did it all again this afternoon. My back is hurting. If I don't lose some weight from all this work I'm really going to be ticked off. I've been eating like a rabbit, okay, except for lunch today but.....come on!
Last night I was, once again 'that crazy neighbor" outside in my nightgown planting. I had gone to bed early but woke up because of the thunder and lightning and couldn't get back to sleep. I should have been wearing that slave bracelet and the crown of flowers we discussed earlier. The weather was so bad this morning....I was pretty scared. It was just thunder and lightning for a couple of hours but when it finally rolled in it was viscious!
Fly - I meant to tell you. I'm ticked. The $16 pink calla lilys at Cornelius are $3.97 at Walmart...same size, and variegated. Can you believe????
Ceejay, I'm so glad you enjoyed Mandell's photos - I am so in awe that I can't quit thinking about them. At the workshop he showed images from China that literally had us all gasping and wiping tears from our cheeks. He's a magician with his camera and (his computer - plus adding the music - that is just such a lovely accompaniment to the photos). Wish you and DH would come out this way again - did you visit Oregon much? Mandell is from Portland so many of those photos (as I'm sure you noticed) are from that state. My friend from Olympia (about 100 miles from me) considered taking his class this June (here on the island), but had too many other things going. I know I am just not ready for anything like that, but someday . . .
Mahnot, I want you to know that you had me singing "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" in my noggin all day long!! Thanks a heap (fortunately, I always have been, and always will be, a big fan of Elvis)!
Kristi, I repeat: Your daughter and her friends are lucky to have you!!! Your new buddy, Lorenzo Lizard, is adorable!
Time to put a bunch of photos on a cd to send to my nephew - he loves to see things from around here to remind him of home!
Murmur, I looked at Mandells photos and they are stunning. Girl, your photos are more than comparable. Go back and look at your pictures of the birds. YOU are a PROFESSIONAL! Those pictures are not a stroke of luck....that takes talent, which, by the way, you have lots and lots of.
Lorenzo Lizard! I love it! That's perfect!
I'll be searching for him always.
Lorenzo Lizard - cute name.
Speaking of names: I love Mario Lanza. Years ago when my kids
were still small, my husband bought me Mario Lanza's records
for Christmas. He warned the kids that they were not to tell me,
it was a secret. Well, my youngest was only 6 at the time and
it was just killing her, not telling me. She decided to give me hints:
"Mommy, you like singing. Singing records are nice. Do you want
some for Christmas?"
"That would be great, honey, but whose singing should I ask for?"
"Mommy, how about Orlando Garzonga?" The cat was out of the bag,
but it did take me a minute to figure out who Orlando Garzonga was.
What a frustrating day ! I got all set to run my errands, put the laundry
in the car to take to my daughter's, let the dogs out, checked that
nothing was plugged in that shouldn't have been, got in the car,
put on my seat belt, started the motor, pressed the clicker to open
the gate...........nothing. Pressed some more, the gate opened half
way, then stayed there. I checked the battery connections in the box
under the solar panel - nothing's loose. Hit the box with my fist. Nothing.
All afternoon, I had to keep an eye on the yard and look out for stray
dogs or people wandering in, and I had to take the dogs out on a leash
to do their duty. Aaarrgh !!! My SIL came over after work, did something
with the wires, and VOILA, I was a free woman again. So frustrating.
Mahnot, so sorry about the darn gate, but what a wonderful memory about your daughter and Orlando Garzonga! I will forever smile if I hear Mario Lanza's name - and I will promptly correct anybody who doesn't use your daughter's pronunciation.
Kristi, thanks for the compliments about my photography, but believe me, I had some beginner's luck there! I haven't had a good photo in ages.
Oh, yes you have, Murmur. I love the bird photos and I'm
seeing yours on there. Kristi's right, and I'm grateful you're taking
the photos. How else would I see some of these marvelous creatures?
Are you an Orlando Garzonga fan too?
Ahhhhh, technolgy, gotta love it. NOT!
Back in my IT days (worse job I ever had...never a moment's rest), most folks wouldn't bother asking for help until they were beyond help. Generally, they had tried to 'fix things' themself before they would call for help. At that point, they usually had made things much worse. Some, beyond fixing. And NOONE wants to hear that they did the damage themselves. Like I said, a horrible job. I worked 7:00 am to 4:00 pm (sounds good, right?) but two weeks out of the month I was on call and up all night. 22 factories that operated 24/7......when one went down, no sleep for me. I did it for about 4 years total and finally said 'enough'....I needed to function like a normal human being.
I used to travel a lot for the different jobs...some were good places to go and seemed worthwhile, other places.....like Hereford, Tx.... you would have to pay me a lot of money to go back. You get off the plane and all you smell is cows. Miles and miles of stench. Even after I got home I could smell it, a shower couldn't remove it. It sticks with you.
Colorado Springs was great, Sheridan, WY., Billings, Mt, Savannah, Ga., Gramercy, La. - I'd go back any time. Lovely people....fun places. Never Hereford again.
Mahnot.....your memories 'stick' with me. I love them. I almost feel like I was there and I almost always find a tear in my eye.
Oh, dear, knolan. Didn't mean to make you sad, but you know -
sometimes Sad is good for us - sort of like a drizzly afternoon
that makes you slow down and plop yourself into bed for a nap
or to read a good book. Of course, in MsBiv's case, that would
be in front of the fireplace and on her chaise lounge. Where the
heck is that woman anyways? Hope she hasn't decided to walk
to Miami now that she's got a new walkamathingee measurer.
Well, folks, I'm off to bed. Can't seem to keep my eyes open
tonight and the 3 squares of Carmello that I had are putting me
into some kind of sugar shock and I'm getting an upset tummy.
Gotta learn to stick to Hershey Bars.
Gonna let my doggies out one more time, go to bed, turn the
radio on and hopefully drift off. Sweet dreams all. Ciao for now.
((((((( Bama )))))))
((((((( All youze guys )))))))
Waaaaaa !!!! Where is everyone? I had a shower, my sneakers
don't stink, and I was wearing a smile when I got here. Sheesh.
My SIL came over and cut the grass this morning. Looks nice.
Well, the farmer with the blue eyes is ignoring me, so I have
called someone else. I hope this is not gonna be a pattern.
I've got oodles of work that need to be done and it's got to be
done NOW. I checked Angie's List, and the guy coming is OK
with them, so we'll see.
It's so muggy here that the dogs don't want to be out at all.
Guess I'd better turn the air on for them. Poor Angus Murphy needs
a haircut, bigtime. That's one more errand on my list.
OK - I'm outta here. Hope you all have a lovely day.
((((( Bama ))))))
Ciao for now.
I'm here, Mahnot. Even though I shouldn't be.
The museum trip was a disaster. Took us an hour to find a parking spot. Even the garage was full. Parked about a mile away, started having ouuur picnic, got rained on. Packed the picnic up and ran to the car for the umbreallas. Walked all the way down to the museum and the line was soooo long it would have been 5:00 pm before we got our tickets. No joke. Took an hour and a half just to get around the Herman Circle to get back to the street to get home. So far, we've accomplished nothing fun for spring break. Drats!
Oh, I'm so sorry, Kristi. Bummer. I think your rain is coming
here because it's getting very dark all of a sudden.
Well, there's always the movies and popcorn. Or the library.
I used to take my grandson to the library, then we'd go for
ice cream. Of course, he's a big reader. Wish I had a good
suggestion for you.
Yes, we were going to go to the movies but one of the little girls has to be home by 4:00 so, that was out of the question. Probably tomorrow. And bowling. I think we'll go bowling tomorrow too.
We love to go to the library too.
The kids and I were so looking forward to seeing the frogs. I should have known better than to try and go during spring break.
Bummer, Kristi - that's very frustrating!!!
Mahnot, yes I am a Orlando Garzonga fan, although I haven't heard his music in a long time - something to look for!
Finally got my nephew's care package together - he's gonna love it!!! I even have the customs form filled out!
Bama, I'm almost out the door, but know that as always, you are in my heart and my prayers (you go everywhere with me, did you know that?). Hope you're having a decent day, dear lady, and that you have again been able to get into the garden. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{Bama}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
Yes, Bama, we're all thinking of you and praying for you.

KNolan, my day has been frustrating enough without that little exercise in futility!
Sorry Biv - I didn't mean to add frustration to an already frustrating day. I should have known better because I felt the same way!
LOL
Whew! We just got pounded with a doozy of a storm and another one is headed our way. My seedlings have had enough! Poor little babies.
