With bubblies!
Thanks Dave, guess I missed it somehow.
A new fun thing to look at
Jacuzzi would be great, but my keyboard might get wet. I thought moon phases fit nicely with gardening.... I always consult before I plant. Google search because that is my home page. Temp, just because it's nice to have . :)
Hi everyone. Sorry that I'm so late to this thread...I've been away from DG for the past 10 days due to health reasons. I wanted to post here, even if I was late, to let everyone know that I was one of the people who had written to Critterologist (Jill) with concerns over the copyrights of the pics. She is a great friend, and I really appreciate her speaking on my behalf when I wasn't able to. I never meant for her to be put in the middle of anything, or for any of this to cause any kind of uproar. I just had/have a few concerns.
I would like for everyone to understand that I have nothing against Dave selling DG and this has absolutely nothing to do with that. I just wanted to say that for the record, in case anyone's thoughts went that way. I haven't been one of the "negative talkers" about the sale...I thought it was a great opportunity for Dave and his family and I'm very happy for them...it's got to be a dream come true for them! I really think that DG has only gotten better since the sale, that's my true attitude. You can see where I posted on the long, long thread saying congrats to Dave, Trish and Terri if you want to look it up. But, anyway...
The whole reason I was concerned about the pics is because I've had some really nice pics stolen and others have used them to make money. It can really put a damper on your day when you're just surfing the web and you suddenly come across your own pic being used to sell someone else's goods. It doesn't matter if it's a store's site, an eBay auction or whatever...it's upsetting. It can also be upsetting to see your pic on someone else's site whether they are selling anything or not. I think half of it is the surprise.
Something I realized after reading through this thread that I hadn't thought about before writing to Jill is that not everyone is so protective of their pics. Maybe some of us are more protective because of bad experiences that we've had, or because of what we'd eventually like to do with our pics in the future.
What's the difference between putting pics on PF on DG and having them on Bloom.com? Well, since I first wrote to Jill there have been some changes at Bloom.com. When I first voiced my concerns to Jill I felt that Bloom.com was a very "open" site and not very well linked to DG or Gardens.com. To me, it felt like it was just "out there" on it's own and anybody could just stop by and pick up a pic if they felt like it. I do feel like the recent changes have made the site much more structured and have tied it in with DG and Gardens.com very well, giving it a more secure feeling. I guess that's the thing to me, PF is a like a site within a site, it's only searchable so many times by non-subscribers per day (or was). It feels as though it has DG, a community, around it protecting it. It's at Dave's Garden, so we can all figure out who Dave is if something is copyrighted to him. At Bloom.com when something is copyrighted to Dave we don't know who he is, even though there's a link to DG there...we haven't yet seen DG and don't get how big or important DG or Dave is. DG members and subscribers get it, but Joe Schmoe who's just looking to swipe a pic doesn't get it.
There is software, I have no idea what it is or how it works, that can disallow right-clicking on a pic to download or save it. Instead of the regular box popping up a box comes up that tells you that you don't have authority to have the pic, or that right-clicking is not allowed. Obviously, I have no problem with anyone using any pic for their personal reference, I believe that's what pics on the Web are for!
I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time to read this, I'm sorry it was so long but I wanted to make things clear.
Have a great day,
Heather
I must confess that I have not read this whole thread so I hope I am not repeating what someone else has said. That said, I am afraid I will have to have every plant displayed on bloom.com because they are all so beautiful. I totally like the big bright right in my faceness of this page.
Thanks so much Dave for surprising us almost weekly. I think I need another job to be able to pay for all the new plants I want!
Joy
I know some folks have been enjoying printing out the "flower of the day," but I do like Heather's idea (if it can be implemented) of disallowing downloads of the images -- maybe do the same for PF also, although I'm not sure I've been able to successfully download PF images before. You can still share the bloom of the day with a friend by emailing them the link to that day's blooms.com page.
As I've said, even if the first three people who pass an image along are careful to include the credit and copyright information, as photos are forwarded along through cyberspace it seems like those credits are inevitably lost.
For anyone who may be regretting (for one reason or another) their choice to not watermark photos when they uploaded them to PF... Is there any way to allow them to edit the photos they've contributed to add the watermark? I think I asked that question at some point, but I don't think it was answered -- sorry if I missed it!
I have made the blooms.com one of my home pages. That way I won't miss seeing a great picture each morning to start my day off right! Then on a few of them, I am finding, I have and can upload a picture and add them to my journal while I am there.
critter, anyone who wants to "swap out" a photo can do so. They need to click on the "report an error" when they're on the correct PlantFiles entry, and tell us they'd like to replace their image with a better/copyrighted one - the important thing is they need to be on the photo page, or at least the main entry page, and specify which image they're referring to.
Hey Sheila
I like your idea of making Blooms your home page so you don't miss it. Great suggestion.
OK, Terry... it sounds like anyone with concerns about copyright of their images can take steps then, although that sounds like a tedious process for you and for them if they've uploaded more than a few photos... guess I was hoping to hear there was a shortcut! Thanks. :-)
