Nicole

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Love it , Dave. Doesn't the plant pretty it up enough?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I am just curious what the purpose for this is. It is a lovely page featuring a single photo from a different site (DG) Since DG is already established and a google search for Bleeding Heart (Dicentra spectabilis) gives DG as it's top option what is the goal or advantage of setting it up as a seperate domain rather than as a page on DG?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

You know Trish knows :)

Say, is there a way aside from marking this site as a bookmark, that there will be a way to "watch" it? I don't want to miss a daily bloom :)

Dea

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

That's such a lovely way to start the day... I'm with Dea... how do we bookmark it?

DFW area, TX(Zone 7b)

Dave, I like it very much. Yes, a Bookmark, please.
It's a joy to look at and a quick reminder of plants you
might have forgotten. Thank you.

I added a button to the bottom of DG for it.

Zanymuse: it's a nice way to showcase the prettiest and best of the flower photos we have. There are hundreds of thousands of image... This narrows it down and shows the ones selected (by me actually) as what I think are particularly pretty.

dave

Very cool, indeed!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Quoting:
I added a button to the bottom of DG for it.

Cool, only I often forget to scroll all the way down as my list of watched forums fills the page. Would love to be able to have the option of placing that link at the top somewhere so I can easily remember to check it daily. It's such a pretty cheerful page. (no need to pretty it up LOL, the pictures speaks volumes enough)

DFW area, TX(Zone 7b)

This is true, Sue. I hardly ever see the bottom of the page,
unless I'm looking for that "Contact" link so I can ruin Terry's day.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

LOL!
Sshhhh, don't give anyone any ideas

Austell, GA(Zone 7a)

Great new feature. I love it.

Dave, this feature is a very nice daily blast of what might be or how did I miss this one, or a wow, me too, moment! Thanks, Patti

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

They print out so much better than the Plant Files format too.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Very pretty Dave, I like it.

Arlington, GA(Zone 8a)

I love the idea of a new Bloom everyday,
Have you considered a Calendar for the Site,Some of us may not get to check it everyday and it would be nice to be able to go back and check a certain day.Or even a daily email with todays flower.
I did mention I love it right.

Nice!

I do have one concern, however, especially with how easily everyone says the images are to print out now.... I know a lot of people disabled that copyright/watermark feature on the photos they uploaded into PF so the images would be easier to see, and they figured their name on the entry would assure that credit for the photo would remain with the image. But if it's so much easier to download, print, save, etc. the photos from Blooms.com, then it seems likely that a lot of images could be "lifted" without difficulty or consent.

I don't know if there's an easy way for people to find and edit their PF contributions to include a little copyright note... or is there a way you could add this to the images that are posted on blooms.com? I realize it's still easy enough for people to edit out or trim off a little copyright thing, but at least that way it's clear that the image isn't intended to be public domain or to be used for commercial purposes.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade here, and I do think that the new site is way cool... but I've received a couple of "what do you think?" Dmails from people who were worried about the copyright stuff... yes, I told them to post their concerns here, but they haven't, and so I will. :-)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks for mentioning this Critter, I had the same concerns right away. I do use the water mark but it's easily enough cropped out.
Perhaps Dave can add an extra level of difficulty by adding something like Flickr.com does. They place a transparent image over your image which acts as a deterrent but of course is not fail safe.

Love the new daily though and have added it to my daily links!

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, this is wonderful! Go-go-go...

There may be some tools Dave can implement to prevent theft.....but beneath the photo, it boldly states the photo is copyrighted to [member name as hyperlink] and unauthorized use is prohibited. That *should* stop anyone who might "borrow" it out of ignorance.

If anyone ignores that prominent warning, they're proceeding with full knowledge that what they're doing is wrong; if they're that determined, they'll find a way no matter what deterrents are in place (short of completely disfiguring the image - which would negate the whole point of bloom.com ;o)

We take copyright theft seriously - in fact, we recently lost a new PlantScout vendor when we discovered they had used some photos from PlantFiles, and they didn't see why we would be upset about it. Suffice to say, we will go to bat for anyone who finds their photos used elsewhere without their permission.

On the other hand, we ask that if someone does dmail you about using your photo, please reply to them - even if it's to decline their request. Their note is most likely due to us advising them to contact you, the photographer for permission. And dmail is a perfectly safe way to reply to them without divulging any personal information or your personal email address. If you ignore their note, they may decide the lack of reply is indicative of your lack of concern for your photo, and consider the image "fair game."

Okay, off my soapbox now ;o)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Please don't think I'm unappreciative of DG admin's efforts to safeguard our contributions. :-)

I do respond to Dmails about my photos, and I'm generally inclined to let people use them, just because they've had the courtesy to ask first. But that's a good point -- it's important to respond, even if it's to decline. People don't always take lack of response as lack of permission.

I think the reason I'd like to see some sort of small watermark on the image itself is that it's easy to download a photo, forward it to somebody while keeping credit appropriately intact, but then after it's been forwarded 5 more times the note indicating the source for the photo is long gone.

critterologist, this is why we have the option to watermark photos. Click on "My Info", then "Preferences" and the Copyrights.

dave

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Right. My concern is for the people who chose to leave off the watermarks when uploading photos into PF (so the photos would be easier to see) and who now have concerns about the photos being imported into blooms.com. Since I don't think there's a way for them to go back and watermark photos that have already been submitted, I thought it might be possible to put something on the photos as they're being imported.

Compare the current bloom.com page with this one:

http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/67062/

These full size pictures have always been up. Nothing has changed, so why the new worry?

Dave

Cambria, CA(Zone 10a)

I just found this and think it's way cool. Since I missed the bloom for yesterday is there a way to go to past blooms of the day?

Yes, actually I'm planning a "view past entries" feature for bloom.com.

dave

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Dave, I think the concern might be that the photos at bloom.com are seen as more widely accessable, easier to download, and easier to print... all of which are big pluses for the most part.

BTW, I really am passing along concerns I've heard others express, not using the "a friend of mine has this problem" line when talking about myself... I put the watermark on any photos I upload that I want to protect. I've Dmailed a link to this thread to the people who have mentioned their concerns to me, so hopefully you'll hear from them directly.

:-)

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Dave, I would like to see each day's featured plant put in order along side (or as a border) the main photo.

What I am trying to say is: the main picture would have thumbnail prints of each day of the current month, either along the left side of the main picture or around it as a border. That way, we could hover our cursor over the picture, find it's name, and click on it to get the full picture and information about that plant.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

How about adding a link to bloom.com on the DG and PlantFiles newsletters? I read those every day.
