CLOSED: Charlie and the Choc Factory Seed Swap

Coaling, AL(Zone 7b)

How frustrating silkie. I hope that you have some real help from the officials there in your area...

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I am so sorry .... I now have also been blessed with living in a rural area... and only 15 mins to any thing major... There is crime here I am not saying there is not but not so much in our area more in the city of Danville, they have shootings and everything... Now I must admit, I think what helps here is that the lady in the middle of our road use to own 7 hateful German Sheps. mean as snakes... No one could walk the road... not even us... we were told to walk the road with a gun.. Yeah I am going to teach my young ones at that time to walk a road with a loaded gun... well believe it or not we became friends after her husband passed and I also helped her with the last 3 of her dogs who were so old and needed to be put down allot sooner then she did so no more mean dogs there but.... She does own 2 new ones now that my son and I went and pickedup for her and so far so good.... We now also own 2 very large dogs and 5 little one that let us know if anything is on the road or in our yards.... my dogs the big one are not mean but hey they dont have to know this... now the mail lady will get out of her car to drop off a package and the UPS man love them... Darla the pit jumps in the truck with him and sits on his lap... her loves her... Now the sherif no matter how many times he has been here he will not open his door or window until I walk outside and call the dogs... Then we also live next to a cow farm and they have some wicked guns... one day I was walking our land and the shot rang out sounded like a cannon going off I am not kidding I hit the ground and screamed... well next thing I know here they come telling me how sorry they were that they were shooting there new muzzle loader what ever... I said I thought you all were shooting me they said no ... they did not even shoot on my land but it sounded like it was right next to me... I said you normaly yell if you see me that you are taking shots... they did not see me this day... I am use to it now but at first scared the pants off me..LOL
GOsh I wrote a book sorry....

Suzy & I are having Post Office Tribulations. Remember my idea a few posts back about making up 3 packets for everyone in this swap that included 2 kinds of black-purple bladed grasses (well, one is the black ophiopogon)? Suzy very kindly sent 50 more seeds of Pennisetum glaucum 'Purple Majesty' to add to mine to give to this swap. That was 8 days ago, and it has not arrived. Boo hoo & grrr.

As things stand, my stuff is ready to mail out, with everyone getting 8 seeds of the Purple Majesty. If Suzy's seeds get here, there will be 12 seeds for each member of this swap. So, I guess all I can do right now is wait. Y'all take your time. When it looks like everyone else has sent in theirs, I'll send in mine - so we can give our "trusty" post office time to produce these seeds.

Does keeping the receipt when you send something through the mail enable whatever got sent to be tracked, or is it necessary to pay for a confirmation # to find out where it went? I think I'm going to do both.

Liz, I know exactly how you felt, and hate that you had to go through that, too. I think that sort of thing, once I got past it emotionally, is one reason gardening means so much to me now - well that goes for anyone or anything I hold dear.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Mine haven't left yet, either.... my dog found one package and I have to replace the decorative part and the chocolate. The seeds didn't interest him too much. I already know they don't fit in an enelope, so I want to find a nice box where they will nesle in comfortably without a lot of room to slip & slide. Dawg has seeds on order, so I figure Monday or Tuesday will be just fine.

Bluespiral, does that black grass, Ophiopogon, produce all black seedlings? Or some green and some black?

(Zone 7a)

Suzy, about 80% - 90% will be black, and the rest will be green. If you or anyone who's interested would like more, send me a dmail around next September and I'll send you a bunch. They should be planted right in the ground in the fall before the ground locks up with frost, and the seedlings will appear a little late in the following spring. As for the ones I'm sending out now, I would wintersow them immediately upon receipt up north while it's still cold, or sow and refrigerate them for a few weeks down south, like you would daylily seed, before bringing them out into warm temperatures.

Ack - I just realized that some of us live beyond zone 6a, which is the northern-most zone for winter hardiness for this plant. Well, Pepsidrinker lives in zone 5b in Michigan, and she loves to try anything and everything regardless of zone - she's probably a pro at wintering over perennials tender in her zone. Unless anyone tells me any differently, I'm going to send everyone these seeds like I originally planned, and she can be the guru for those wintering these indoors up north. I think this would be lovely underplanting a containerized weeping Japanese threadleaf maple - I seem to recall seeing a bonsai forum around here somewhere. But some of these maples are natural, genetic dwarfs, so those might be easier.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Blue, I've seen it growing here as a perennial; not sure which Black Mondo Grass it is, tho.

I want it!

Suzy

(Zone 7a)

Hello, everyone - Suzy's seeds arrived here today - took 10 days, but they're here :) It might not be until the middle of this week when I can get to the post office - our car has a couple of dates with repair shops.

Mary, adding your Purple Majesty seeds to what Suzy & I send would be great. I'm putting hers in with mine tonight and will have the whole business ready to send the next time our car cooperates. Charlie would approve of our gardens this coming summer.

Belinda, I can be such a "gasbag" - I don't do dmails quickly at all, so they pile up. I owe a lot of apologies. Have just dmailed you. Hopefully, you'll get back to me soon, since your swap is time-oriented, too.

Y'all, Belinda has been having the kind of weather dreams are made of - sure wish she could send some in all our BEs. Personally, am very glad to see that sheet of ice receding from our back garden - before we all know it, we'll be doing a mosquito-repelling seed/plant swap or we could broaden it to anti-itch potions - what's good for poison ivy?

lol,
karen

OK, the birthday festivities have passed, and I am able to concentrate on seed packet fun... I just finished making my packets, and will try to get a giftie tomorrow or the next day and get these puppies out the door! Elizabeth

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Didn't get my seeds out yesterday as planned. Started out the door when the phone rang. Had to pick up my granddaughter from school, sick. Took her to the doctor, strept throat. Came out of pharmacy, got another phone call, had to go get hubby, he's sick and running a fever and couldn't drive. Ended up back at Wally world getting more meds and soups.. i'm worn out. will try to get it in the mail sometime this week after all the sickies are out and gone.

i'll let you all know as they come in so ya know i got them. they are not due till the 24th i think i had put so still pleanty of time. we can wait as long as we need to not a prob. you all are very welcome for the extras i'm haveing ton's of fun with this swap and i'm glad to be able to give as others have for me. there is nothing more fun than shareing with friends especialy seeds and the love for gardening!
silkie

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

i forgot to tell ya i changed my addy in the exchange to my p.o. box. if you have the other addres it is fine it is my home. i changed it cause if i get it at the po box i get it at 10 am everyday not squished. if not i have to wait for the mail lady which is anywhere from 2:30 - 4:30pm and it gets crammed in the box. so it's not only better on the seeds but also quicker. so if you send it to either addy it is fine.

Taking care of family, friends and all other important commitments come first, period. :-) Trust me, we ALL understand - - - and yes, Karen my weather has been truly what dreams are made of............very little wind, highs in the 70's and lows in the upper 50's. By far my FAV time of the year. :) If only it stayed this way gals ~ you all will be very tired of me grumbling about the HEAT by June, we are usually in the upper 90's+. ICK. :(
Silkie, I know this is going to sound like a really goofy question - - - but do you have "Silkie Chicks"; hence the name silkie????? Or am I WAY off base? LOL (nothing new for me!) roflmbo
ttfn,
Belinda

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

since some of us in the swap are doing trades if you want to send your trades for me to send back to the other person to save ya on some shipping it's not a problem. just put it in your be's when you send them and a note as to what is for who and mark trade and i will pass them along when i send the be's back.

DH sent mine out on Thursday, 2/8/07. Lacking telepathic powers, my sweetie didn't realize I would rather have saved on postage by sending it out first class, so it went out by "priority" mail, confirmation #0304 3490 0003 1483 9856. So, that package must now be worth its weight in pret-ty good chocolate - it'll be interesting to see what "priority" means this time.

And Suzy sent enough seed of Purple Majesty to get the count up to 18 (some are 19) seeds in each baggy for members of this swap - I really hope everyone posts pics this summer - there are so many combinations to try with this plant - not to mention bird conniptions among its seeds. Suzy, did you send those diagrams of a container garden with Purple Majesty to Mary to share with us? I thought those were great....maybe add something spilling down over the edge of the pot ... is there an orange lantana that would do that instead of growing upright? And then there's a lantana with pale yellow florets that change to pale pink as they age...

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

i just got it in. what do you want me to do?
plmk,
silkie

(Zone 7a)

I think that 18 seeds of the Pennisetum glaucum 'Purple Majesty" for each person of the swap might be enough, but it you still want to go ahead and add 7 more to make it 25 seeds, that would be okay.

One bag is marked "6b" - that's my part of the swap that I was supposed to do.

The largest bag is marked something like "extras". In it are 12 "books" that are identical to each other and are just a gift of mine & Suzy's to everyone else in this swap. Inside each "book" is a baggie, and inside each baggie is another baggie folded up. The folded-up, inside baggy should have a label inside that says Pennisetum glaucum 'Purple Majesty'. That's the one to add seeds to - only if you don't have anything else to do - sounds like things are usually hopping over there. DH & I experimented to see if the baggy containing all the seeds could be opened without disturbing the arrangement, and for us, it worked.

But, if it looks too complicated, I wouldn't add the seeds and just distribute a "book" to each swap member's envie.

I'm hoping the postage I sent in small denominations will help with any extra weight my stuff may add to others' envies.

Does this sound alright? Let me know - am hanging around today snipping chicken wire roofs to keep squirrels & birds out of my wintersowing jugs when I take their tops off - will check in again in a bit.

I am so amazed - priority hasn't always meant in 2 days - sometimes it means "lost". I hope I did everything right.

karen

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

No fair! Mine went out Priority on 2/8 also and it sounds like you didn't get it yet! Hopefully Monday!

Suzy

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

suzy and caren i just got yours. if they were sent to my po i get them in the am if sent to my home i get between 2:30- 4:30.

(Zone 7a)

lol, Suzy - sometimes, I think the post office has its own little spot on Mt. Olympus and the fickle gods and goddesses who run it play games with our mail as if it were our fates.

(Zone 7a)

Whew

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Okay, then that's good!

Suzy

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

bluespiral-i can send it back first clsss and return unused postage, or cash, or seeds to make up for it, let me what i'm to do,

suzy- who do the silver ones go to? all the loose candy am i to slit it with every one?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Silver are the 2bs. I also did 5b and those are gold.

Loose candy was packing material...or you can send it instead of the bar. Whatever works best for postage. I thought you said you had a dozen kids -- I figured they can get a sugar high if nothing else LOL!

Suzy

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

lol, i forgot you were doing 2. forgive my blondness. some didn't send as much as others did so i will use for fill in first if you want. yes i have 5 and they were eyeing it up already, rotfl. seems like i have a dozen most times, lol. i will add extra goodies to yours since you sent alot of stuff to make it fair what you get back.

ok i got 3 big boxes now for wonka stuff.

box-1: i'm putting all your seed packets in one these won't get swapped till everyones is here.
box-2: i'm putting all return envies/boxes fixed to go back with postage on or money inside them so those are ready(except blues till i know what she wants me to do with the extra shipping).
box 3: has bags with everyones names on them so everyone has there extras, trades, newbie pcks ect in them seperated so they get to the right people and it has all the gifts in it as well to be swapped after the rest are here.

please let me know if i missed anything.
silkie

suzan- you sent next most candy how do you want me to do yours? does it go to one person or split up with your packs or most for your gift and part to add in were others were less? let me know so i know how to do yours. i'll add extra of something for yours also.
silkie

(Zone 7a)

Mary, maybe start a postage fund for absent-minded, silver-haired old ladies who forget to include postage, labels, etc. with their swaps??? just kidding - but it's yours
