Cute idea! I will have to see if I have enough for one more swap!

(Zone 7a)

I'd like to participate. Could you define "oompa" and "wonka", please? If they have to do with TV, you need to describe them for those of us who live without TVs.

(Zone 7a)

I have seeds for 5b - still curious, though.

Athens, OH

Here's the plot for the movie,
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

"The world is astounded when Willy Wonka, for years a recluse in his factory, announces that five lucky people will be given a tour of the factory, shown all the secrets of his amazing candy, and one will win a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate. Nobody wants the prize more than young Charlie, but as his family is so poor that buying even one bar of chocolate is a treat, buying enough bars to find one of the five golden tickets is unlikely in the extreme. But in movieland, magic can happen. Charlie, along with four somewhat odious other children, get the chance of a lifetime and a tour of the factory. Along the way, mild disasters befall each of the odious children, but can Charlie beat the odds and grab the brass ring?"
Summary written by Rick Munoz {rick.munoz@his.com}

The oompa loompas are the diminuative inhabitants of a fictitious island that Willie Wonka saves and brings to his factory as workers. http://www.imdb.com/gallery/mptv/1372/Mptv/1372/21729_0006.jpg?path=gallery&path_key=0067992

Willie Wonka is the eccentric, reclusive most famous chocolate maker.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

6a
thxs and plmk
moretz

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Ok I'll take the oompa1
Caren :o)

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

6a is any thing grasses, trees, bushes, , fruits, veggies ect no it doesn't have to be choc or specific color.

i said choc room cause i can't remember the name of it. it is where they have the waterfall, and the garden that is totally edible. try to remember something that was in the garden in general doesn't have to be specific or something really cool that willie should have had growing there in his garden. basicly this is an anything goes one.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

good to have you aboard Heavinscent, welcome!

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

i dont know what was in the room lol can any one help me on this lol
i dont think i have the movie so i can watch and see it lol does the trees or grasseds etc have to be edible?
thxs

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

sorry if i am making this complicated but want to make sure i am doing this right and understand

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

if everyone agrees how bout we make #6 willies garden. then we can do that anything that grows in a garden that is edible. would that be ok or does anyone else have any ideas? no problem i'm easy to work with i want to make sure everyone can fit in somewhere.

(Zone 7a)

Thankx, Rox & Silkie, I sure would love to see a garden based on this theme - would anyone like to share pics this summer? Some of the characters could be done up as fancy scare crows ,,, Could purple-podded pole beans suggest a curtain of chocolate candy in the garden? The dark, purply-green leaves African blue basil would be pretty with that - will have to check and see if my seeds matured enough when I harvested them. I do have at least one pack's worth of Pennisetum glaucum 'Purple Majesty' which would set the beans & basil off nicely. I know, we're supposed to keep our seeds a surprise, but this is such a great theme for different gardens - I can see a waterfall among these purples made from a pyramid of pots of the green Amaranthus caudatus with those long ropes cascading down (don't have that one, either).

Is anyone else getting some ideas from this?

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

gm silkie~ one question I have is this...............what is our deadline to get the decorated seed packets to you? I am working on my packets today and thought I better check to see when you need our BE's by. :-) Thanks!
Belinda

bluespriral - - GREAT vision for Willie's Garden. I love the Purple Majesty Millet, and I think surrounded by pots of Amaranthus caudatus would be beautiful! We might think about adding a few hues of blue alongside the purple...........I think gardens of blues, purples and whites are simply gorgeous! Something like white/blue balloon flowers, Belladonna delphinium, Russian sage, Black Knight Butterfly bush, Amethyst Astilbe, & a few Lily-of-the-Valley? Just a few ideas I had to add? :-) I love themed gardens, they are my fav!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

sorry haven't been home. march 22 unless we need more time we can make it later if need be. i'm gonna start on mine tomarrow.

so is that a go to add # 6 as willies garden and add you guys to it?

that would be awesome to do a garden with that vision. that would be beautiful!!!

(Zone 7a)

I think I better stick with 5b, since I know I have seed for that one. Hope that's all right and that I'm not confusticating things in the Chocolate Factory

TexasGardenMom - A few small doses of pale yellow among the murky purples would be fun. Abelmoschus manihot (Sunset Hibiscus) with its big, pale yellow discs with dark chocolate-purple heart mooning over a sea of the hardy, late-summer blooming ageratum would be fun for me - but I'm just musing - I don't have sunny meadow conditions. I agree with everything you said, though.

And how about those Salvia guarniticas? The S. guarn. 'Brazilian Black & Blue' does well here - stays low to about 3', needing no staking; tolerates quite a bit of partial shade, smells bad to woodchucks & rabbits - and lurks well in shadows, to boot :) The blues and purples of sages and morning glories contrasted with dahlias in cream, pale tones of yellow or apricot are an essential trio for late summer into frost - these keep hummingbirds very happy.

But, Salvia guarnitica 'Purple Majesty', which can be a pain as it gets to 6' and needs staking, is the most incredible magnet for hummers we have ever seen - cuttings root and winter over indoors surprisingly easily. Now, what would y'all recommend to grow with this one?

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

no problem, i'm glad to have ya here. thank you for joining us!!

ok that means we need 6 more members now. does anyone else wanta join us in the wonderful world of choc and candy???

silkie

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

sign me up for something for it is late and I cant keep my eyes open but they wont close in bed... so I will read tomorrow what I want in for but dont want to lose a placce..
thanks,
Susan

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

always room for you susan, glad to have ya join us anythime!! just let me know when ya can where you'd like to be.
thanks,
mary

(Zone 7a)

Mary, I found another black-purple leaved "grass" in my seeds saved from last year: Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'. It's about 6" high with little spikes of white "pearls" faintly blushed pink. Absolutely foolproof. If it's true that edging can make or break the beauty of a garden, then this one will make it - wonderful as edging or a low, carpeting "eddy of water" in the foreground.

Soooo - and I apologize for being a pain, here - but can we put me in 6b? I can do grasses and fruit and other unusual things for that category. And I think 5b, which I originally signed up for, might be easier for someone else to fill.

Hoping not to have irked anyone's morning -
karen

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

Great idea Karen to add just a splash of color with the Sunset hibiscus. I hope we have given someone a few ideas to go with the purple themed #5. :) And also, I was thinking about your question regarding the salvia - - - what about a verbascum mix (it has lots of white, pink & purple) and grows 24-30". It would be a nice off set to the salvia or maybe even going with a nice summery mix of pink coneflowers and Little Miss Muffet Daisy? Just a couple ideas................anyone else have a good idea to add? I guess you guys can tell that I am SO ready for Spring - - - I've got "the fever" really bad! LOL
Karen, if you ever have any extra Purple Majesty to trade, I would love to add some to my gardens. I love anything that brings in the hummers and butterflies. Sounds like it would be a nice addition to my millet garden? Thanks.
Belinda

(Zone 7a)

I love that last palette of white, pink & purple you just brought up, Belinda. I'd be tempted to put something about 6' tall toward the back or center - maybe slightly off the middle - like the Black Knight buddleia pruned to one trunk that isn't allowed to leaf out until about 3 1/2 or 4' - then it would be shaped into a "lollipop", so that the flowers could swirl right up against it underneath.

OR! a tall teepee of morning glory 'Sunrise Serenade'???

There's no way I could ever actually make these gardens, but it sure is fun dreaming them up.

For this thread, there's a lot we can do - at least conceptually - with lollipops...standardized rosemary in the herb garden...standardized boxwood in a white flowered moonlight garden - a pool of white daisies under the boxwood...

I don't want to impose too much on Mary, so will send you dmail regarding trade.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

belinda and karen i wish i had the visions you all do. i bet your gardens are fantastic!!! karen i switched ya, not a prob.

i'm so glad you are all excited about this! hubby thinks i'm crazy, lol. he is tired of hearing about seeds and flowers, i think i've worn his poor ears out. i decided to wait a little to do mine yet cause i have more neat things comeing in throught the week i think would be great for this. so my fist stop is shopping for things then i'll get busy on what to do after it's all in.

alright that leaves us 5 more spaces to fill, we are getting there!!!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok it is late as I just woke up at 1:30am and is not 4:22am so I am going to try to go back to bed... I would like #3 I believe it is candy? If this ok please let me know... Thanks and night night.

Mary, I don't know if I really count as a newbie or not, but I have only been on DG since the summer, and have only braved the terrain of seed swaps and trading since the first of 2007 (though I have quickly become addicted!!!) This is really my first year to add flower gardens to my yard; I've only really done vegetables before this season.
