This morning, as I was sipping my hot coco on my front porch, I saw business cards on the plants. Picked it up, and it read: " Make your home more beautiful with a beautiful garden" ( ok with that!) and then it continued with something that makes me anxious to say something back: "Save your time for more important things, let gardener so and so take care of it for you"
AAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHH! What could be more important than gardening, going to the mall??!!
This afternoon I went for a walk, and found those cards ALL OVER THE PLACE; everyone has them on the grass!!!
Not only am I offended by this man's statement, he threw his stuff on the ground, careless!!
I have been thinking what I will tell him when I call him up... but can't think of anything with IMPACT!
What would you say? Advise please...

"Save your time for more important things"
Doesn't that count as littering?
And trespassing, at least.
Christie, Sounds like the man in my neighborhood who would turn up at my door every few weeks looking for gardening work, specifically lawn care. The man is standing in my garden asking to mow my lawn, I have no lawn to speak of. My garden is planted to the sidewalk strip with shrubs, grasses and wildflowers. Finally I told him I like to garden but if he'd like to clean the house that position was available. He never came back.
In your case I'd say "If you think gardening is so unimportant I don't think I'd care to hire someone who thinks so little of their own work".
Ooooooo .. that's my territory! I'm the sledghammer for my neighborhood. My neighbors come to me for problems like that. Here is what you do,
1. Scan the card
2. Take pictures of the cards on the grass and everywhere they are
3. Call gardener so and so and tell him they have 24 hours to pick up every errant card that is littering the yards or in inapropriate places and to present themselves back at your doorstep at a specific time to show you their peddling license (most cities require door to door people to be registered and fingerprinted). When they show up, have camera in hand and take their picture and get a plate number if possible. If they do not show up, tell them you will be calling the city's Litter and Nusance Control Department on Tuesday. If they have no peddlers license, call the police and give them your pictures.
Every Spring we have door to door people non-stop, so I put this sign on my door and it works.

Love the sign!!!! ...you cranky old lady!!
Perfect!!!
I need that sign! Very clever. Thanks for sharing.
I've worked in landscape maintenance for 12 years and have had to do some door hanging marketing. It wasn't very effective considering you could pick the neighborhoods to do, if we got leads off of 5% of the houses that was good. Of course 5% leads would equate to >1% sales. For a lot of these 'some guy in a truck landscapers' yellow pages is not an option with the cost, but there is no way to make yourself look hireable by making a mess either.

You are all welcome to taking it and using it. I've had a great deal of experience as an enforcer as such and working with city hall and the police. This world has gotten too crazy and half the time, the people that come to your door are actually casing your house for vulnerabilites or to get a look inside to see if anything in there is worth stealing.

I live in California, and a lot of these workers are illegal... Being a forreigner myself ( although legal!) I can't report them...
I wanted to say something to him, and I got a few ideas here, and the "cranky old lady sign", I will put up. I have a regular no sollicitors sign, and it doesn't keep any of them from ringing the bell, or quaking when the door is open (with locked screendoor).
( my son thinks I AM an old lady, so it'll be appropriate!
Thank you for your smart'nes!!!

X, your sign needs a P.S. that states all of the above also applies to politicians.
Yup, gonna laminate mine.
LOL!!!
Unfortunately, not everyone in the world is a gardener. There are those that desperately need their lawns taken care of either because they are too busy making a living or they are too old. If you find a good lawn person, one that shows up on time and does what he/she is supposed to do, and does not charge an arm and a leg, then you are blessed. I could use some help but no one ever shows up here. LIZ
I have no problems with gardeners, but this one stepped on my toe implying gardening is unimportant.
Ofcourse some people can't or won't do it themselves, all good with me! But for me, gardening is very important. He could have worded his card better!
I just looked at the pic of your front yard. I wonder if that person has any idea of what gardening really is? Your home looks beautiful I might add.
I was surprised when I called the police because someone had dropped a soft drink cup right by the back bedroom window. The policeman said that there was no law against walking over someone's property unless the property was specifically posted in the proper legal way. This means you legally couldn't do anything if someone chose to make a path across your property or chose to stand outside your window. Fortunately, I don't think many people know that.
Good grief. I never heard of such a thing!!! Do you think it's that way everywhere?
It's that way here. Until we had clearly posted "No Trespassing" signs last year the sheriff's dept. couldn't come in and take on the gangs of kids who were using our homeowner's assn. as their "territory". After, they were able to send in the juvenile & gang activity squad.
I wonder if my beware of dog signs could mean the same as no trespassing or if I need to put up a couple of those signs also. I sure dont want someone I dont know coming onto my property uninvited, that just gives me the shivers.
