February's Coffee

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hazel - this area is flat as a pancake! I wish we had hills but we don't, though we do live on Hill Road.

My favorite clematis would be 'Liberation', by Raymond Evison. It was named for the 50 year celebration of the liberation of the Channel Islands.

Pirl
I shall make an effort to check this one out in my gardening book, lovely pic.
Came on here for half an hour about 11ish and not got off yet, so I realy must close for now.
If Mark comes on ask him to give you the link for The Wolds or Caistor site if youre interested, I know the link is on his own web.
All for now, thanks for chat, housework calls and Rio needs a walk.
Hazel

Harry and Jack are back from their first walk of the day in five degree weather as I sit here in my pajamas. If it were summer time now I'd have been outside for more than three hours!

Mark is very kind and sent me many links about Southwold and the Yorkshires.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I missed a lot here yesterday.

Arlene, lovely pic of you & Jack. stop pretending you're old. I planted Liberation this year...looking forward to it. in fact I planted 2. I complained about another plant in the order and Garden Crossings replaced the whole order, so I planted one in the front of the house, too.

Blooms, you are a beautiful lady. I can picture you with your hair down in an elegant dressing gown. that is a stunning photo.

Harper, I just think I'll adopt you. Pretty name ~ pretty girl.

Al, how does somebody with such fair hair get so tan? wait, I know, the tan is a dye job.

Hi, again, Hazel. Rio is adorable. Give him a snuggle for me.

Doesn't everybody think Hazel should tell us funny stories about Mark?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I bet Hazel will give glowing reports about Mark!

Blooms - I don't know how I missed your photo. Must be my old age, no matter what gram says! You are lovely and the photo is perfect in all ways.

Gram - after waiting eight long months and my DH making innumerable phone calls I finally received my Medicare card - that alone is proof I'm not one of the young'uns.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Anita, You left out a word. Did you think Al was digging a hole for me??
Wecome Hazel. Glad to hear that you too are on the east coast. Is it the Northeast? That would be very fitting.

Work has been VERY busy. I am involved in developing several seperate strategic plans at the same time (youth, seniors, town-wide, response to drug and alcohol survey) plus a building committee for a new senior center. All of these things are on top of what I regularly do for work.
During this craziness I found out I had 3 tears in my retinas (retinae?) and had 2 laser surgeries to correct. Unbelievable process. 9:00 am office visit. They find the 3 tears around 10:00am. Do office surgery on 1 eye to repair 2 tears. 10:30 I leave their office and go to work for the rest of the day. Yesterday, I retuned for the other eye then went to 2 Board meetings. Crazy!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

We got snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Hi eveyone
having my morning break, its snowed here in the night.
Dave interesting stuff about your eye treatment, I hope it all goes well for you.
I hate wearing glasses, and would love eye Laser treatment, I spend most of my time trying to find where Ive put them. LOL
Pirl I darent gossip bout Mark, but if I did it would make your hair would curl.
Weve had plenty of laughs, especially at my computer skills.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Mark, can I be your proofreader? no inside jokes now, you two! if you laugh, you have to share ;0) ah, old friends are a wonderful thing.

Dave, how do you get a tear in your retina? what on earth have you been up to besides working too hard?

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi, Hazel. Not everybody gets up this early LOL. But if I want to get in some DG time before work I have to.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Hi grampapa, nice to talk to you, I may be an old friend of Marks, but Im not so old!!!!!!!!! LOL What are your Gardening Favs ?
Hazel

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

early - it's 7 there, come on.

Dave - that's too bad with your eyes, what would have caused that? I have to admit that the first time I read through your post I thought it was tear as in tear in my beer.LOL

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Haze, you are knockin on a bit......................LOL

Yes Gram, you can be my proofreader!!!! No problem..................

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Al, don't you have to go to work?

Hazel, hard to pick a favorite. I love everything that grows, just about. Right now I'm working on a large new rose garden that's going in this spring, so I guess I'd have to say roses. There's some stuff in my journal under garden plans, rose garden. just click on my name if you want to see the plans :0)

I'm also doing a lot of wintersowing (Mark sent me some wonderful seeds..I'm sure you're not surprised.) Lot's of new perennials. I'm doing an herb garden in a heart shape and eventually a long cottage garden bed with the herb garden at the center. But I have to concentrate on the roses right now. here's one I already have - no name.

How about you? Got any pictures you can share? What are your faves?

I see I'm not the only one getting the worm.... I've been up since 5:30am...something woke me up and I couldn't go back to sleep.

How are the eyes now Dave? What caused the tears? How did you know you had tears?

We are on a warming trend...only 12°...

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Anita, it was 12 when I got up, but we're climbing...all the way to 14F now. I'm always up by 5:30. wish I could sleep later. But I get some time to myself. DH sleeps later. How's the atmosphere at work..all quiet? how many more days?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

gram - looks like it could be Peace (the rose).

Jack also has a torn retina but first they're checking the glaucoma every four months - next appt. is next week. The laser surgery takes less than 30 minutes - no recovery time: miracle of medicine. Jack has 20/20 and does not wear glasses and is not having any difficulty reading. Thank God for such great doctors to see what doesn't even bother us yet but if left untreated could change our lives.

Dave - hope all is well with you.

Anita - maybe it was a L.I. phenomenom. I was up at 5:00 and wondering why. I'm a professional sleeper. Then I spent two hours on emails!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Dave, that's scary about the tears in your eyes. It's amazing how you were able to continue to work after the lazer surgery. Did they give you some kind of anesthetic? Hope you find time to take it easy.

Gram, I checked out your garden journal. Your rose garden plans look beautiful! It's going to be spectacular. Can't wait to see it after everything gets planted.

Pirl, I'm a professional sleeper too! Only, wish the pay was better...

Harper

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Me, too, Harper.

Tears (rhymes with pears - not as in crying tears) may affect people in different ways, I don't know, but for Jack night driving is very difficult when vans tailgate and the lights hit the sideview and rear mirrors. Though he'd like to flip the switch to avoid the glare immediately not all drivers are very courteous and tailgate to the extreme, leaving Jack blind for an instant in that one eye. Consequently, either we just drive within a very few miles from home or I drive at night.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I can't stand those tailgaiters! At night, I just flip the mirrors. I can't see much out of the side ones at night anyway, so I point them so that I have to stretch to see, but the lights don't glare in on me. Sometimes I shade my eyes with my hand.

Pirl, I promise you, I am a courteous driver!

Harper

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I believe you, Harper! In the time it takes to flip the mirror he's already blinded. That's why I do most of the night driving.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Tears are more common in very nearsighted people and just happen. They can also be caused by trauma. I saw a quick flash or two of light (thought it was a car in my rearview mirror). Later I had "floaters" which are little specks you might see floating across your eyeball. They happen to most people but a lot of them, or a flashing light is reason to get to your eye Dr. ASAP. If you had what I had, horseshoe tears, they can be lasered to prevent a detached retina which is much more serious and you could lose vision.
There were other tears in my eyes that may be like Pirl's DH. They are not horseshoe tears and don't run the same risk. They left them alone.
Already TMI, but the scarey thing is the symptoms showed in my left eye (floaters & lights) but not in my right eye which also had a tear.
I'm fine & totally back to "normal". Thanks for your concern.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Good to hear the good news, Dave. Jack also just had the flashers in one eye - the same eye as the tear.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Anyone there?
granpapa (jan) Ive sent you an d.mail about your journal. The pic of the rose is lovely.
Thank you all for your comments on Rio (dog) him and my garden are my passion. Hes laid snoring at the moment, under my computer desk, Tired himself out playing in the snow, he adores it. But hes in bad books as hes snapped my Lavendar off at the bottom, Hope it reshoots, Ive put the stem in water, anyone think that might reshoot? It snowed more last night, but its nice to see the daffodils & snowdrops peeping up out of the snow. The farm estate I live on has all the grass verges lined with daffodils, to mark the estate boundry. When they are out Ill send you all some pics, with my new camera, only a cheap one, cannt go to Marks Budget !!!!!!!!!!

Mark reply to your comment on my age, youre only as young as you feel. Sometimes I feel 18 again. Lols
