After the usual medical disclaimer (IOW - I have no knowledge about this), I did see this site where it is listed as an edible in the landscpae. Now, it doesn't say which iris.....

Texas Statewide Roundup April 28, 2007-TRADES
Thanks, Cj. I was in a little bit of a panic. I was planning on tortilla soup, but without irises.:) Hmmm. Wonder what flavor they would add. I think I won't try that just now. It'll be interesting to see if the other bud on that stalk blooms after its chicken stock/salt bath.
But then I saw this....
A story with a moral, and disclaimers. Harvey became a student of plant taxonomy early in his teenage years because of mistaken plant identification. He and a 14-year old buddy had been avidly reading Euell Gibbons books on foraging for edible wild plants and were eager to try cattail rhizomes. They bicycled to a small sedge meadow bordering a nearby lake and pulled up several stalks to get at the rhizomes, then wielded their official Boy Scout knives to prepare the strips of reputedly crunchy goodness right at the lake edge. They didnÕt encounter the outer "peel" they should have but waved that observation away as literary exaggeration by edible wild plant experts. After washing the rhizome pieces in the lake, they popped bunches of them into their mouths and swallowed them greedily. For the next hour they vomited their guts out in bewilderment, and for the rest of the day and part of another they savored the flavor burning pepper and old boat motor oil. Later, Harvey discovered they had sampled wild iris (Iris virginica), which is mildly toxic and definitely not very scrumptious, instead of cattailsÑthey both have green sword-shaped leaves and grow in swampy or marshy places. Despite strenuous encouragement from his parents to go into medicine or accounting and spare his life, he decided to learn how to identify plants with a higher degree of accuracy by studying taxonomy in a more rigorous fashion. Eventually he enjoyed many (properly identified) edible wild plant products without stomach distress or the lingering taste of peppery motor oil.

Was it just the flower? Did it just fall in and you got it right back out?
Hmmm. Well, now. Which one is right I wonder. It fell in and I picked out after maybe 30 seconds. It was the faded flower and a bud not opened yet on a short stalk.
They also list Dolichos lablab, and it is eaten in many foreign countries....according to research I did a couple of years ago...
Maybe you could call the poison control center in Galveston?
I just called poison control. He said that it can cause stomach and skin problems, but since it was only there for less that a minute he didn't think it would be a problem. Hmmmm. I think I'll ask on the lily forum. thanks Cj.
LOL Marylee, when did this happen? Have you eaten any of the soap yet?
Marylee as long as that soup been boiling , it should have killed anything toxic.
I remember Euell Gibbons, wasnt he the one who ran around the woods eating everything and died of stomach Cancer?
ROFLOL!!
This was last night. I didn't want to take any chances. I am making tortilla soup and I really like it, but if I make it and it makes everybody sick, they won't eat it anymore. So I threw out the liquid, washed the chicken and started over. After that awful stomach virus in Feb, I am not taking any chances.:)

I've got you down Clayton!
Clayton, I have you down for aloes.
Thanks,

I've been going through and trying to organize and check over the things I am bringing to the roundup, and made some not so nice discoveries. Spider mites and aphids. I am soaking my seedlings and plants thoroughly tonight to rid most of the spider mites and I will treat them tomorrow to hit everything else. I will do my best to get rid of these bugs before the roundup, but I will recommend keeping them separated at first to ensure they are gone. And I won't be offended if someone doesn't want to risk it. The problem is that this year I overwintered brugmansias in the greenhouse, and that is where the spider mites came from I think. I didn't have a problem before that. The aphids I think just came about in the last few weeks, they aren't bad and I will hit them hard tomorrow. Sigh....I guess I bit off more than I could chew this year with all the seedlings. I didn't realize how busy school would keep me. Another thing I found.....the cherry brandy gaura did not like being divided. The main plant is just now springing back to life, and one of the divisions completely rotted. The other has a little new growth. I hesitate to take another division from this plant. Also, the divisions I tried to root of the dianthus 'spooky' are not rooting. I can take fresh divisions, but hopefully someone else has a better method for rooting these. It's been pretty hectic here but I will hopefully have everything conquered and not find any more discoveries.
:) Kim
kim,
I have a good size lantana if you would like it I will dig it up after I cut it back some. It is yellow and pink. I think it is called confeti. LMK

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
