Zucchini problem

Uniondale, NY(Zone 7a)

This is a picture of one of my zucchini (Burpee Hybrid) plants from last year. The started out great I picked 4 squash and then the four plants started to wilt from what appears to be some sort of disease. I am getting ready to order my seeds for this year and would like to get something that is not as susceptible to whatever this is. Any thoughts as to what this problem is and what can be done to prevent and/or eliminate it would be greatly appreciated.

TIA
Hank

You might have had a squash vine borer on your zukes. If you grow trompocino squash you won't have a problem with the borers. Harvest these when young and you can use like zucchini. Wilting could be from a number of causes.

Here are some DG threads from last season that may help you:

Thanks for your very fast reply.

That's what I thought it was at first, I have had problems with vine borers in the past but what bothered me is the yellow mottling on the leaves.
I noticed in one of the threads you listed that you recommend sowing clover as a possible deterrent. Any particular type? Should I sow the clover so that it is growing when I plant the zucchini or sow at the same time as the zukes? I think I will try some tromboncino squash, it seems they like to be grown on a trellis, any idea how they would do on the ground?
