It appeared that both transactions might have been staged.
Craigslist
oh you guys...i didn't see any of it and don't have a clue what you are talking about....but
it sounds quite juicy:)
hehe
Ah! I followed this but then there was this:

Alas, a hoax.
That said, it does highlight the importance of spelling correctly and making an effort to present the item that you are trying to sell in the best possible light.
Another thing that I read about this particular bottle was that an museum expert actually asked for a close up picture of the hand written label and confirmed that it was a 1922 commemorative bottle of ale.
very interesting......i just love ebay!!!
I don't know if I love eBay so much anymore but it is still a tool that I use for my business...
For example- why would that high bidder think that bidding not once but TWICE as a joke is acceptable when eBay's policies state that placing a bid is a binding contract? Non-Paying bidders waste everyone's time and for those who try to make a living on eBay it just kills them!
And eBay will refund the seller but the Final Value fee on that item was over $7000! They charge first and refund later! And if the guy had followed through and personally picked up the item and paid with cash, eBay and PayPal would have backed any claims by the bidder regarding "Not as described" or "Not received"! Grumble grumble grumble.
For anyone interested, here are the 2 auctions:
The first with a low bid and the second the failed sale.

Hummm glad I've not tried Ebay. I spend enough time with what few sites I check. :)
My nephew bough a 1995 Land Rover Discovery through Craigslist day before yesterday for a price I thought was too low.
Yesterday it caught on fire on the freeway in LA and he managed to get it pulled over to the side and it completely burned out.
I think that he can cancel his check that he paid with but sheesh- he is 20 years old and thought that he had done his due diligence!
woah!!!!! Isn't there a buyer beware policy on used cars unless bought from a dealer? I see on the judge shows they always tell you to have a mechanic look it over first. Really stinks to have such a bum deal like that----so glad sounds like he walked away okay!
we bought a car in ebay and it was great....it is just like buying regular cars....buyer beware
I would be so scared to buy a car off ebay! Was it local so you could view in person?
I bought my car off eBay and it was fantastic to this day and it was sight unseen.
Unfortunately though now I need to shut up because this does actually veer directly into what I do for a living and I need to pay Dave for a classified ad to discuss this! LOL
BTW, the Hermes cashmere scarf was on a table not a wood floor. Look at all the pictures and you will see the edge of the table.
it was in dallas...we are 5 hours away....so we bought it knowing full well that if it were a lemon we would full well not take it....
paj----good going on that!
The thing to watch out for now is that there were a bunch of cars flooded in the Gulf region that are in the used car market all around the country and they're often fixed up just enough that it's hard to tell.
You're so right! It's very important to utilize a service such as CarFax when buying used cars so you can check the VIN# against previous repairs/claims. http://www.carfax.com
A question for you CL 'experts'. I have attempted to contact 3 sellers on CL this week end and the email via CL does not go through. I get an error report that the receipient will not accept my emails. The seller offers no phone #. Is that a tactic some sellers use after selling their item to avoid further emails on the subj? But the item is still posted so I kept thinking it was my computer and maybe it is.
I don't know of such a feature. You can cancel your listing easily, so I don't know why anyone would go to those lengths to avoid you, and certainly not three people.
I think that there is a technical limit on the number of people that you can contact via CL within a particular time frame, and that you are triggering that limit. Try again after 24 hours.
I did hear back from one of the emails that was reported blocked. So maybe it is my pc. Thanks.
It could be your e-mail address is one of the domains flagged as spam by many ISP's. Some are very particular about receiving mail from Hotmail or Yahoo domains, for instance.
my email is not either one of those but a local company; pacifier.com I think in the end 2 of the 3 did go thru.
Have you heard about the young woman who answered a Craig's List ad for a nanny and was murdered? People can be too trusting but never too cautious! I read that her parents stated she'd once worked as a nanny in Turkey after responding to an online ad. It worked out well once, so I suppose she felt comfortable...so sad that she didn't feel vulnerable.
Oh my gosh biv biv I JUST did!!!! http://houston.craigslist.org/bab/483352805.html
I actually had my own encounter with a total crazy, just by email thank the heavens and have decided it is better to give my stuff to charity than deal with trying to haggle getting a few bucks for my goods on Craigs.
And actually, I posted to see if there is a charity that would pickup with exchange for a tax receipt. I mentioned that I preferred a charity that didn't just resell the items and I got a great email from someone in my local area who DOES pickup with receipt and the items go towards an ORGANIC COMMUNITY GARDEN!!!! You can't get much better than helping people learn to garden. :)
The post was flagged for removal. What did it say?
My mom is always telling me to stop meeting people by myself that I meet on craigslist. I am always picking up stuff from people with ads in the baby section. I will be more careful after learning about this:
Katherine Ann Olson had answered online ads for nanny jobs before without trouble. But one posted on the popular Craigslist.org website for a job in Savage may have cost the young woman her life.
Olson, 24, was found dead in the trunk of her car at a Burnsville park late Friday night. She was last seen by friends on Thursday morning, when she went to meet someone in Savage about the job, which authorities said she had found on Craigslist.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A 19-year-old man suspected of killing a woman who answered an online ad for a baby sitter was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder.
Michael John Anderson is accused of shooting Katherine Ann Olson in the back at his home in suburban Savage, according to the criminal complaint filed in Scott County District Court.
Bail was set at $1 million.
Olson had gone to Anderson's home Thursday to inquire about a baby- sitting job she had seen advertised on the popular Internet bulletin board Craigslist, authorities said.
Authorities said her blood was found in Anderson's home and a gun was found in his bedroom. A neighbor saw Olson's car sitting in front of Anderson's house for more than two hours Thursday, the complaint said.
The body of the 24-year-old Minneapolis woman was found Friday night in the trunk of her car, which was abandoned in a park about five blocks from Anderson's home. Olson's purse and a bag containing bloody towels, one of which bore Anderson's name, were found in trash nearby.
Anderson has been in the Scott County Jail since his arrest late Friday.
Cell phone records indicated he talked with Olson on Thursday morning, the court documents said. Anderson also said he had not used Craigslist since January, although the e-mail address in the ad matched his address. He told police his mother and three friends had access to the account.
When confronted with evidence, Anderson admitted he was present during Olson's slaying but said the killing was committed by a friend of his who "thought it would be funny," according to the complaint.
Howie just sold his cellphone and PDA to co-workers and bought a T-Mobile Dash with they money. We found it on Craigslist and met the seller at a White Castle last night, along with two friends of ours. Howie was looking through the files (it's a smartphone running Windows Mobile 6) and found some rather, errrr, embarrassing pictures on it. You would THINK people would delete stuff before selling it. There was a picture of the seller on there, too. LOL He did a factory reset so all the pictures and their contacts are now history.
Sheesh, yep I would have deleted it. But then again I never would put an embarrassing picture of me out there anywhere. I'm not sure how it all works but I wouldn't even want to sell my computer when it gets old, be worried some genius could find all my old files. Nothing embarrassing, just personally find that creepy.

Well, I'm back at it again. I try NOT to use Craigslist for all the crazies I've met there but sometimes, if you have some good loot worth selling I can't resist. Although I now have a local charity group that PICKS UP and a income tax receipt is just as good for me.
But in finishing up my last batch of "okay I'll try to sell it on Craigs" stuff I am getting tons of no-shows.
What do you make of people who are emailing you back and forth and FINALLY FINALLY you give them your phone to call to make sure they come when you are home or your address to mapquest and THEN right before coming by they send an EMAIL that says (and here are 2 recent ones):
I'm sorry to do this but my mom just called telling me my aunt passed away so i'm not gonna be able to make it.
or
We ended up having to take our daughter to the ER last night so now I won't have the money to buy it now. Thanks.
Items were $10 and $15 respectively.
I mean---emailing me this right before they were to come? Once I had a lady say she was on her way OVER to my house and after waiting 30 MINUTES I called her to ask what was up----she said that the item she was GOING to buy from me---well her SIL JUST NOW came over and had bought her a brand new one. ????
Seriously, I understand tragedy happens---but it surprises me you'd then remember to EMAIL about something so small as this... Is there some scam I don't know of where people are just trying to get your address or phone number? I just can't imagine? Yes, I the unexpected happens but I think I'd be to distraught to get back to the person over it and if it was a tragedy but didn't hit to close to home I'd have the decency to let the person know by phone if they'd provided it.
Recently I have really really scored on CL's! Are any of you familiar with Marge Carson furniture? I am going to go look @ a sofa later for $150. I think it is old but we will see......
We found a really nice wingback style La-Z-Boy recliner on Craig's List last week, and another style one on there yesterday. I won't go look at stuff by myself, though, that's for sure. When it's a small item, we meet the seller at a public place like a restaurant or coffee shop.
"Flagged" and gone?? I have been looking @ cars on CL. I cannot tell you how many times I have clicked to find it has been 'flagged' and it is gone. There must be alot of pranks in the auto section. I have learned enough now, in the last week, about reasonable prices for certain used cars that $3500 for a 2005 Suburu Outback is a prank or something worse.
I've sold cars, furniture, baby items all off Craigs. I'm not sure on those "pranks" though. Sometimes some folks really just list things at a great price. Sometimes they are in a hurry to move, I had a friend who sold her car in one state way under value because she couldn't take it with her on a move to another state and she had to sell fast.
I've actually had seemingly normal ads I've posted flagged.
I only wish the system was set up so that you can view the reason YOUR ad was flagged.
Yeah, if they made note of the reason would be great. Some of these are down less then 30 min.
Many are flagged because the person put up more than one ad for the same item and that is against the rules.
They are flagged very quickly sometimes. I accidentally placed a wanted ad for tomato stakes in the farm/garden (?) category because I had it and the wanted category open on two separate tabs of my browser and filled out my ad on the wrong tab. Within fifteen minutes, I had a notice that my post was removed because I had miscategorized it. They don't move ads, they just delete them and you have to re-post in the correct forum.
I thing CL is the best thing since . . . . DG's!
