Summerkid; your scenery is STUNNING!!! I like your special feeder very much, it looks very Victorian! Stylish!
Show me your feeders!...Part 2....
Really ornate and attractive SK! I bet it is flustrating for the squirrels. Love the water views you have, but wouldn't want to live in IL!
It has been too cold down here for me this week!
Yeah, I really hate it here too. I'm from Montana & have my heart set on moving to the Pacific Northwest. But I can stomach a couple of more years here because I love this property.
In the summer a blue heron nested to the left of that A-frame. I could set my clock by his rising! Especially as fall set in, he looked colder & more frazzled every morning as he teetered on the dock, like a ruffled old grandpa. We have some sort of vultures, lots of hawks & owls, and occasionally an eagle. I'm seeing something big over there in the trees this month but can't catch them with my binoculars. It doesn't seem like we'd have eagles over there right now so I'm thinking osprey.
But my favorite might be the half-dozen swans that panhandle up & down the river as the seasons come & go. They eat out of my hand.
I have to be careful with my feeders because I have a couple of cats who venture outside once in awhile & danged if they aren't too fat to snag a bird here & there, I don't know how.
It looks like it is a wonderful place to sit and watch the world and nature go by for sure.
Yes, that view of the birdfeeders is the same as from my computer. It's kind of a bleak beauty right about now, but in the summer it's quite lush. I'm also stockpiling rhododendrons, small evergreens & other woodland plants to soften the riverbank.
Beautiful place SK!
Is that because the womenfolk whop 'em upside the head?
There ya go summerkid!!
Lovely feeder there too.. My sister could use one like that .. do you mind if I show her this picture?
My property is too small for that one I think..My primary focus is actually Butterflies, but with the cold they are South or dormant now.. Plants are all down, except the evergreens..But come Spring you will find me out there taking macro shots this year. I will get the birds from this window as I have been.
Loved the metaphorical story there with the Squirrel, LOL! Reminded me of the Monkey paw story.
Christi, Sheila, Very nice Downy shots there!
I Gotta share this pic of the baby Ruby Crowned Kinglet I got today almost dusk..Practically Hummer sized..To give you a ruler, the bar he is sticking his wee head through is about 1 x 3/4".. I'm still sorting the pics I managed to get..too too tiny of a bird! I hope I get a lot of these, and there is a good chance I will until it gets too hot. Then they will move N by NW to breed..The Hummies should be back by then. Awweee!!
:-D

Summer, that is the most beautiful feeder I've ever seen - well worth what you paid for it! Are you sure you want to move to the PNW when you have such beautiful scenery there? It's quite incredible. I hope you'll share more pics of the general area.
Great photos, everyone - and Deb, that is the most itty bitty Kinglet ever!!!!
It is SO SO flat, murmur. You never even see a sunset. And it can be awfully hot in the summer & awfully cold in the winter yet no snow.
I'm surrounded by cornfields. There's nothing else to photograph.
I think that feeder is still available from the company that Stillbrook Horticultural morphed into.
Okay then - when are you moving out to Whidbey Island???!!!
Is that where Greenbank is? In October I took my b'friend on a whirlwhind tour, hoping to convince him to move with me (born & bred in Illinois). We started out in Seattle, then through Leavenworth during the peak fall color and on to Wenatchee, where my dad lives, down to Goldendale to visit Grandma, and on to White Salmon, which is the area I liked the best. On to Portland to visit friends & family there, through the Oregon wine country, and finishing up in Cannon Beach.
Cannon Beach almost did the trick. Jack has lived all over the world & says he's never seen a more beautiful beach.
Yes, Greenbank is on Whidbey Island. And I must agree with Jack that Cannon Beach is absolutely gorgeous. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
I went out to move the suet feeder over to the peanut log feeder the other day and caught movement just beneath me arms. It was the RC Kinglet! He was right about my waist on the bottom of the peanut feeder. He looked up at me and took off. I was grinning at him so he probably saw my teeth and thought he was lunch. LOL! Here is a good one the DH took later when it returned.
Alrighty~ I meant to post a pic of the female *trying* to fit her head through the small rectangular opening in the suet feeder...Even though she is only about a half inch longer her head was a bit too big to fit through the smaller openings...
Sheila I need to send you some of this 'Insect Treasure' suet, it's the only way to get them to stay still for a second. LOL! I would love to see that you are getting a lot of them over there.
I've been looking closer at all the pictures I have taken of these Kinglets, and there must be more than 2!! Kinglets lay an amazingly large clutch (up to 12), so it wouldn't surprise me. Murmur, ya might want to watch for them in Spring, they will pass through WA on their way to Canada..
summerkid, stay clear of those cat claws before you click on this, lol!

Been trying to catch up on this thread, gorgeous photos everyone!
Debnes, thanks to the link on kinglet, I will be watching for the little guys from now on!
I am not sure which one I had bought before. I usually make my own PB suet and they go for it. They haven't acted that intrerested in the Crunch PB on the log yet.
Great shots , I love to what them flit around too.
I tried PB suet too, and they wouldn't touch it.. Starlings pigged out on it though, lol. I think I'm stayng with the Insect kind for now since I am beginning to see the whole family. I wonder where they have their nest, or where they stay at night in the cold, humm..

Same result here with PB suet. I'll probably give it to the squirrels.
Great pics all! Welcome Christie, you've got a great yard! Summer, WOW! No wonder you're getting all those hosta! I'm jealous! :)

BEAUTIFUL!!! :-)
Great shot!
How sweet Deb, we don't get them very often here. It is a cutie!!
Deb, thats a beautiful shot!! So nice of him to stay still for you. lol
That one was for you, Pelle! ;>
Pixie: It was nice of him to "pose". Of course, ya don't see the 7 other shots of him jumping around and being a blur! :)
DebinSC
Thanks Deb! :-) I know they are such fast litlle guys; aren't they. Make the Chickadees seem a little slow.
Titmice are so adorable and beautiful! Great pic! Thanks for sharing.
Marilyn
Loving all the wonderful photos! Y'all are getting some GREAT shots of so many different birds!
Deb - You have a great set-up location for photographing all your birds! Whooo Hoooo! I am really enjoying your photos!
I'm beginning to think there is something about my yard that birds just don't like! No birdies all weekend at my feeders. I added another arm to the post and am hanging all the feeders on it except the tube feeder. No little hummers, no bigger birds in my yard. I wonder what my neighbor is feeding the birds? She gets them at her feeder. Maybe they are stuffed after eating at hers?
It is like summer here. I think many of the migrating birds have left to go North. It's probably too hot down here for them this winter. Or they don't like what I am feeding them. Or the local hawk is intimidating all the birds. (Though I doubt it.)
Maybe I should just stick with butterflies, caterpillars, and lizards???? lol Those I get plenty of! :-)
Deb,
Great pics! Love that adorable Kinglet! It's the sweetest 'thing'!
Did you buy cherries from the grocery store to put in your tray feeder? Did you cut any up or leave them whole? Pitted cherries?
Marilyn
Ohh I did it again!! Sometimes I miss things up the thread ... hey but I am looking back and seeing the pics Debin posted of her wee titmouse.. How sweet that one is!! Great shot!
Don't give up yet Becky.. It takes a while to get regulars at your feeders. If other people in your area are already feeding birds, it's only a matter of time. Just hold out for the long haul, they will come see you soon enough. Some of these little guys come around and you might never see them unless you have a window or a blind to see them through. Placing a nice (even pricey), suet cake in front of a window with no screen is an idea that happened to work here. It takes the right birds a fair amount of time to discover a secluded suet cake.
This Dove was real curious about the window.. she went for several swings on the hanging feeder, (like a kid), even though she didn't want anything to eat from it. She liked checking it out.. so did several other birds. Like the above Kinglet, & Mockingbird... also Mourning dove hopped up there to have a look. I was outside working a lot today with the wonderful weather too, so it threw a few of them off.
