Show me your feeders!...Part 2....

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I do believe that they have B!!! Nice looking feeder!! Congrats!

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

Great buy, Sheila! Here's a bunch of (I think) house finches waiting their turn directly behind the feeder...

feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on the ID, I am absolutely brand new at this. Using the great website recommended earlier for ID!

Nice feeder Sheila!

Very good b!

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

And since you all have now created a new addiction for me, I went ahead and added a seed block out back. Yes, this perch is crooked... Tony made it years ago. We may fix it, but I'm starting to think it has character!

Mr. Cardinal says "Off you go! This is *my* seed block"!

And the quail like it too!

Quite the parliament of finches. ;-) And you've got a white-crowned sparrow in the gang with the cardinal. :)

Marlton, NJ

Very cool b ! I love the quail!

Oops! I overlooked your 4:12pm post--where there's a nice view of a white-crowned sparrow. :D They have such beautiful trills.

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

ooooh, which one is that, Magpied? (I'm a total newbie, remember...)

edited to say, I bet it has a "white crown"...

Is it the one facing the Cardinal?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I think the pic magpied was mentioning was the one where you showed the crowd of birds that had found your new feeder. If you look in the bush on the lower right side you can't miss his black and white crown. Listen for him too, they sound so sweet.

Edited to add this link for bird sounds.

Wow, some beautiful feeder! I put most of mine away during the winter months, only have 2 cheapies that I use. I still get a good crowed so the birds don't seem to mind!

Marilynbeth, the bird food is bought at Wal-Mart.....I think the brand is "Morning Song"
and at the top of my bag in the left hand cornor it says "Real Cheeries". I filled the feeder yesterday and threw out the bag so I can't be positive, but im pretty sure.
Here's one I found on the internet that I was thinking of buying. You might be interested in it as it has more than just cheeries in this blend. Scroll about half way down the page and you should see it.

Not sure what kind of Sparrow this one is, .(White-chined?) Hard to tell..... anyone?

Btw.. Just reading about the White -crowned Sparrow recently.. Said that it is a songbird by which they patterned and studied all other bird songs. It was a friendly little bird with a good song, and easy to take into captivity for the studies...

Looks like a wee baby, whichever it is.

Brenda, hi!
In the 4:12pm post, yes, the bird to the right of the feeder with black & white striped crown. The juveniles have the same stripes but with alternating light & dark brown (instead of black & white). In 4:23pm post, as pelletory found, the wc sparrow is next to cardinal; in 4:26pm post, the wc sparrow is left of feeder.

deb, looks like female house sparrow. :-)

Savannah, MO(Zone 5b)

Seems like there are so many species of sparrows to learn about and identify. I like your picture and the sparrow has a nice light brown streek behind its head. I have been practicing with my new camera and am learning more about taking pictures of birds all the time. I want to get some on these threads soon.
I saw a nice flock of cedarwax wings just before dark land in one of our trees but they were to far away to take a picture of this time. I had'nt seen any for several weeks here. I really beefed up my feeders today with some sliced oranges, apples, blackberries(frozen), sunflower(oil) seeds, peanut butter and oatmeal squeezed into pinecones, and some old bread slices. Now I have to just be patient.......
I currently have Red Bellied and Downy Woodpeckers, Mockingbirds, Chickadees, Tufted Titmouse, Nuthatches, Cardinals, Goldfinch, Housefinch, Purplefinch, Sparrows, Bluejays, and Juncos visiting my feeders. It's lots of fun feeding and watching them.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Debinsc - love the contrast of the Cardinal against the silver foliage -good photography there!

I am so impressed with all the birds and feeders - I have lots of feeders and lots of birds, but I sure don't come up with the great photos.

bsavage, I wouldn't change that feeder for anything!!

The photo I have here would be great except it's a bit fuzzy.

B,

Wow! You got lots of Purple Finches and a I see a White Crowned Sparrow!!! We don't see the Purple Finches in the yard (bummer, lol) and I might see one White Crowned Sparrow once in the Winter months (for a brief moment) if I'm lucky. Beautiful birds!

I see another White Crowned Sparrow on your tilted feeder. Wonderful!

And, you got all those beautiful Quails! We don't get those here (lol, bummer). Thank you for sharing!

You'll just have to share more pics with us! lol

Edited to add.....BTW, that is a huge block of suet! What's in it?

Pixie,

Thanks! I just saw that bag you described at a store here (before I read your answer), I didn't get it (stupid, stupid, stupid me! lol), but plan to the next time. How much of it do you put on the feeder each day for the birds?

Edited to add to say that I didn't get that bag because I was waiting for you to say which one you use. It looks likes a great choice also! (I keep wishing I bought it away, lol). Turns out that it was the 'right' bag! lol

Thanks Magpied and everyone for the info and help on ID's! That seed block I got at Ace Hardware... I think it was called the wild bird mix or something... has sunflower seeds and lots of other seeds. At least it's lasting more than a couple of days. Now that the birds have found the feeder, they are *piggies*! I filled it up almost to the top on Friday, and it was completely empty in 24 hours! And it holds a lot! So, I guess I'm going to have to start "rationing", because they just keep eating until it's gone! As Tony said, though, we've had a LOT of visitors. Very fun to watch and learn. They are quite beautiful!

WalMart also carries that seed block (at least in my area).

Hebron, KY

lol, how big, wide and tall is that seed block? I've never seen one that big before at a store. Great for the birds though.

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

I guess the seed block was about 1 foot square. Couldn't believe how heavy it was when I bought it! I think it was $13.99.

Love that photo, Murmur!

Marlton, NJ

I think mine was a little smaller than that and less expensive. Probably 9x9. I'll check later.

Marlton, NJ

Just checked, its 8 x 7 x 3. Its so nice that theres so much variety to chose from. Where did you get the larger size b?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I'd like to pick one of those up myself....but I need some sort of platform in which to place it. See what ya'll have done? Now I'm wanting to go to Wally-Mart and buy more feeders...lol. And with no large enough trees in the backyard..more shepherd's hooks while I'm at it...lol

What do ya'll do to take care of the "spent shells" that our feathered critters leave behind on the grass? It looks as tho the ground is beginning to rise a bit under my feeders...even tho the bermuda grass grows over them. I would move my hooks, but the clay/rock soil here is so hard to penetrate that I can't seem to create new holes for the hooks. What is a bird watcher to do? lol.. :)

Melanie

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

Mine was from Ace Hardware.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Mumur that's a good pic of your Purple Finch! ...
And the Fruit and Nut Morningsong is a great price Pixie! You can get it next time ya go Marilyn:-). Your not stupid, lol. There's a reason for everything, hehe.

Speaking of piggies....LOL.

great photo, Deb! I wish I could get as close to my feathery friends as ya'll do.....Such clear, pretty shots. :)

We have an Ace Hardware here as well, bsavage. I'll have to check them out as well.. :)

LOL, all birds are pigs, aren't they?!

Great pic of that Purple Finch Murmur and great pic of that Cardinal Debnes.

Marlton, NJ

Darn, I think our closest one went out of business. Have to check the yellow pages.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol..speaking of chubby birds. I found this image online a bit ago.... This poor guy must have been really chilly.... :)

Thumbnail by TxTurqoize

Melanie, That pigeon is most definitely sick. I know the look!

Brenda, isn't that a 'quail block'? The idea is that quail will peck at it while on the ground. But--not a good idea if the block becomes wet. Also not a good idea if birds stand on it, as their droppings will be on the seed. :o

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

RNTDoves .... sure they eat out of the dish, but then combing the ground is more peaceful.. less competition. :-)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Ya know, I've seen that look as well, mag....what with all of the many birds that I've seen in the wild..... Poor guy.... : / I remember our parakeet of 12 years just sort of looked puffed up and fluffy before he died....

Melanie

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol...peaceful until a raucus gang of grackles and red-wing blackbirds appear....what a fun mob to watch....lol

Pouring down rain, here, again, all day, again. lol I decided to go out and check on the birdseed situation and I was stunned at the variety of birds. I saw nuthatches, wrens, mournings, collareds, must have been 50 cedar waxwings, at least that many cardinals and robins, several blue jays, several different kinds of sparrows, goldfinches, house finches, and a brown creeper. I ran in grab my camara...batteries dead...no extras, either. Rats!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

daaaang...you lucky girl, you! I won't see that sort of variety until next month.....and only for a short while....

Hebron, KY

It's been raining since Friday here. Real soggy when I feed the birds this weekend. :-(
