Show me your feeders!...Part 2....

Hebron, KY

New feeder I got at Lowe's the other day. Got a 'big brick' of 'suet' to go with it, Trail mix, so something like that. Chickadees were the first to find it soon after putting it out. It has a perch on two sides.

Mr Titmouse finally stayed still long enough to get a photo. I have had to sit at the window, camoflauged by plants to finally get a pic. of him!

This little finch evidently thought he had a cute butt....he was right.

Mr. C getting a bite to eat as I had to hide behind a huge plant to get this one too. Sorry about the leaf in the way.

I kinda like this photo, if you look..this little finch's feet are not on the ground. He was hoping around yakking at the other birds to get away and I caught him in mid-jump!

Then the Nuthatch jumped in to get his share.

pixie - LOL - loved your comment about the finch with the cute butt!

Pixie,

Great photos! I haven't gotten a pic of the Nuthatch yet, bummer. :-(( LOL

What kind of feeder are you using to get those photos?

Marilyn

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Marilynbeth,
It is just a cheap feeder from Walmart that I leave out all winter for the birds. DH nailed it to the deck rail and then put a board in front of it so our feathered friends would have plenty of standing space. I usually buy songbird food or a bird food that has real cheeries in it and the birds love it. (so do the squirrels)
In the spring I put out orange slices for the Baltimore Orioles, but other than that I always use the same food.
I actually sit in the house to take the photos...behind a bunch of house plants so they can't see me and then I try to zoom past the leaves of the plants to get a shot of the birds outside. As you can tell w/ the Cardinal photo...I didn't get past the leaves very well!
Edited to say: These were taken yesterday morning....it was 11 degrees but with the wind chill it made it -6 degrees....now you know why I take these in the house!!!

This stump serves all the critters, what the birds and critters don't get, the racoons finish.

These are some great photos guys! I just love getting my fill of birds we don't see all too often around here ~ Thanks all!
The jumping finch is so cute pixie! I love the stop-motion photography~here's my contribution and an all purpose feeder, have another of the same that serves as a bath~

These guys are little piggies! :)

lol...squirrels....ya have to love 'em. :) I guess this rascal was also giving me a hand and feeding a flock of White Wing Doves below him. They didn't seem to mind a'tall....lol And that darn feeder is suppose to be "squirrel-proof." Since I don't have any trees in my backyard, with a newly built home and all, I pretty much have to rely on shepherd's hooks to make do. They seem to work ok....tho there isn't much perching space. :)

Hi Melanie, I had that feeder and the darn squirrels broke it,lol. This Squirrel Buster Plus feeder is working great but now I notice that the brats are chewing the branch off from the tip inward in hopes that the feeder will fall down. They never stop trying.

lol pelletory...they are determined little rascals! Nice feeder ya have there. I was curious, what sort of bird was that to the left of the feeder in mid-air. Odd markings...sort of barbed....almost like a quail, lol....

Pixie,

What brand of Birdfood do you use that has the real cherries in it? I'd like to get it for the birds here. Thanks.

Edited to add.......... What store do you buy that birdfood at?

Tx, Its a Red Bellied Woodpecker coming in for a landing. He pulls al the peanuts out of the mix and I put extras in for him.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

ahhhh....ok... :) (I know, I know, quail don't go to tree feeders, lol) But ya never know ;)

I do have quail that comes to my fly through feeder - I've not been able to get a picture, darn it.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

This doesn't really count as a feeder pic. The mourning doves are always at the feeder, so many that I never take pics. But tonight I was trying to photograph the evening sky, and when I looked at the pic, I saw the dove in the tree.

Exquisite photo - I love winter branches against the sky . . . and you've captured quite an array of color in the sky! The dove was just frosting on the cake!

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Beautiful color in the photo, Debi.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Lovely Debin!! The sky is always changing....nice to capture a moment like that!

Debnes

It took 'em a while, but the Gambel's quail go to my tree feeder for peanut butter mix (pb, flour, cornmeal, lard, sugar). They look silly but they don't care. ;-)

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Magpied, that would be a great photo!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

beautiful photo, deb. Something about the starkness of winter clad trees...truly lovely... :) Thanks for sharing. lol, magpied....THAT would be a great photo... :) I can't get quail to come to my feeders...but I do have a neat talent of calling male Bob Whites up to my house, lol. My grandfather taught me how....though he could call females up as well. I called a male up to the front yard....even tho behind us is a huge pasture. The front yard is,... well....a street with houses in front and to each side. I sat on my front porch bench and called...got him to the street...and when he saw that I wasn't another male Bob White...he took off in disgust for the pasture....lol I reckon the neighbors must have thought that I was crazy...lol

Melanie

I will try to get a pic of quail at tree feeder but they're keeping a low profile with Cooper's frequenting so often. (They come and go quickly for the seed I scatter on the ground.)

Melanie, when I had the blue jay, she mimicked one of the male quail's calls... which seemed to trigger a lot more calling on the part of the quail. :-) (I used to get the poorwills to 'answer' me in the desert... lol)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

awww... I love the sound of whip-poor-wills. I use to listen to their calls at night, deep in the woods at my Grandmother's house in the Blue Ridge Mtns. :)

Same fellas at the feeder today: titmouse, chickadee, sparrows. I was hoping to get either a nuthatch or a woodpecker, but no go. I put our peanut butter today though, and a new finch feeder to try to lure a few goldfinch. So I hope to have some great feeder shots again,...meanwhile, here's Mr. C on the birdbath.

Today I saw a pair of Dark-eyed Juncos... I took the pics and let Ben ID them for me. We have 3 books now for him to look through. The pics are through my window, and some of them aren't that great. however this one is well enough to tell.

:-D

Great photo thru the window Debnes! I try to get pics of the Juncos, but they hide alot.

To give ya an idea of the tempurature dropping now here in North Watauga/Keller TX .. Droplets that are thickening on the tree outside here.
Still the birdies come by for some fuel to make it through the coming freeze tonight..

Debnes,

That tree looks like a Magnolia! I have one too.

Marilyn

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Had a lot of Mourning Doves this morning too...>
Oh and thanks Marilyn! That tree is actually a Bradford Pear..Not one I would pick, would rather have a Magnolia there.

Funny story, Some Waxwings that flew threw a few days ago landed in that tree. One of them pecked a bud off the Bradford and spit it out, (Hoctooy!). Then they flew off to Shiela's house :-) (South of me).

I'm going to try a little "bird psychology". Haven't had any takers at the new flat feeder we hung near a window a week ago. DH swiched it out with the peanutbutter feeder they are familiar with on the pole system. After they get accustomed to the flat feeder on the pole system, I'll move it back to the window. Has anyone tried this?

Sounds like it might work Deb,, worth a try.

Here is my $8 cedar feeder from WM, cam with some seed too. I am not sure it is much of a hit yet. I only had one cardinal at it so far. But I am sure as soon as the regular feeders get close to empty they will find it.

Nice pics, everyone! Apparently the birds have found my new feeder...
