by gum you are right Pirl ;)
Coffee Time 2007
Congratulations, Anita!!!
pirl, I don't have lids on the cups; I covered them w/the baggie and I'm hoping that the condensation and moisture from the soil they're on should be enough. I've had many, many outdoor "cold frame" seedlings lost b/c rain got into the ventilation and rotted/washed away the seedlings. I only have 2-3" of soil in the cups.
Here is a planting of 100 daylilies on the south facing slope where I hope they will go permanently. It needs lots of clearing and faces the pond:
See the mounds of snow??!!! I had to drag myself through the drifts to take this picture. Lucky I took my cell so I could call for help.
Facing South down the slope. Note my Supervisor's tail in the lower right corner.
There is a raked bed with hosta seed somewhere horizontally 1/2 way down. They have no cover or pots.
I'm having a hard time keeping up lately! It must be cold out!
First and foremost, Congratulations Anita! What a nice Bithday present. Working with less tension makes it so much better. Good luck giving notice!
Jax, That's pretty quick assembly! I don't think I could even get the soil into that many pots in 2 hours. Possible warning, my understanding is you need air to get in your containers. I have holes drilled in my milk jugs and soda bottles and I leave the lids off.
Pirl, I think you need holes in your coverings, primarily for air and for water. The wintersowing website explains all in a much more concise manner than the DG threads. Anita(I'm pretty sure sure and I did this once before. She was more organized and succesful than I was.(What a surprise!). Good to see Charlie again!
Al,Gotta love the Onion! Thanks for the chuckle.
I will read up on it today while the snow is falling. At last count there were 14 snowflakes... make that 17.
Jax - you sent me your blizzard! I love your property!
Jax, your property is so beautiful! The real Jax's tail is lovely. I almost couldn't see it because of those white-out blizzard conditions. When do whe get to see all of her?
I tried winter sowing last year and failed miserably. I think I'll visit the wintersowing site. I'd like to try again, but I want it to be successful!
Jax, Definitely need a pic of REAL Jax :0) your countryside is lovely there! and I don't see why ALL of your sowing wouldn't work. maybe not every single seed, but...nice work!! does your supervisor have a flask of something warm in case the snow gets you? (I think everybody knows what I mean by warm...like brandy..not coffee). I can just see that hill covered with daylilies and hostas. You need some hellebores ;0) (don't mind me...I love them, but I don't have many shady areas, so I plan for other peoples).
I sowed 4 more gal. milk jugs yesterday...snapdragons, hibiscus moscheutos (3 colors), rue, 2 kinds of fennel, and 3 varieties of gentian for my rock garden. lots more to do, but at least it's progress
Harper, any idea what the problem was last year? I feel bad that it didn't work for you. You hear all the raves about how great it is, but I suspect the failures just fade away and take another tack...probably sowing the conventional way in the house or buying their plants again. I told myself I would start slow and see, but I've caught the fever and taken the 'leap of faith' LOL
I thought Jax was a cat! Goodness- will I ever learn how to pay attention to the details? (embarassed sigh)
AYC- I am just the caretaker here. Jax is property owner and makes sure EVERYTHING I do is done properly. Actually, I don't get a salary, so that technically makes me his slave.
grampapa, I've wondered about growing hellebores; I haven't got to them yet. I'm only 46 so I've only tried the first million or so garden plants!
About ventilation: Hhhmm... How am I going to make that happen? Would it be more of a concern when the ground starts warming up, or the seeds start?
This is the real Jax. He's a he. I tell him he's very macho, even with the poofy coat. This pic has been cross-posted; sorry!
He is VERY handsome, poof and all :-)
who cares about cross posting! That cute mug deserves to be seen twice!!!
Gram, I have no idea what I did wrong, except to think that these fragile little seeds can't take the cold. (*sigh*). I'll try again with some more.
Harper
I'm hoping my limitted success last year was due to really horrible potting soil. We'll see.
Now this story isn't from the Onion :)

Scientist Develops Caffeinated Doughnuts
Updated 7:40 AM ET January 26, 2007

DURHAM. N.C. (AP) - That cup of coffee just not getting it done anymore? How about a Buzz Donut or a Buzzed Bagel? That's what Doctor Robert Bohannon, a Durham, North Carolina, molecular scientist, has come up with. Bohannon says he's developed a way to add caffeine to baked goods, without the bitter taste of caffeine. Each piece of pastry is the equivalent of about two cups of coffee.
While the product is not on the market yet, Bohannon has approached some heavyweight companies, including Krispy Kreme, Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks about carrying it.
... but can he make doughnuts good for you???
Not by adding caffeine. LOL
All the caffeine and only 100 times the fat!!
Well, this thread is huge. I started another, please join me over there http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/689353/
