Sheila and Deb - Good idea about using a nail or pin to lock it in place! Y'all are awesome with the suggestions!

That wee birdy is ..... an Orange-crowned Warbler.. Great guess sally!

I believe it's a female... They have come to spend the winter here it seems.

Now it makes all kinds of sense, I saw the male peeping through the trees when fall began.. Thought it was a Wilson's Warbler.. haven't seen him again.

Ok, ok maybe not the same.. he has a definate black cap on, doesn't he?

Sorry if the link doesn't work, it was a long one... just go to the wildbird home page and put in"suet" for the search.

Hebron, KY

Deb,

I've been to the WBU store in the Cincinnati, OH area and haven't seen that particular suet. I feed suet cakes year round. Guess I'll have to check into it. Thanks for sharing the info and link.

Edited to say...... DUH!!!! It's a Wild Bird Center store you were talking about, not WBU. I just realized that.

Here's another titmouse from today enjoying the newly hung up Madeline lol. I need to find something I can stick pieces of orange on. The birds keep knocking them out of the tree. I used to have a board with nails driven through it on the deck but it got moldy and then rotted. They sure do love those oranges though. I know I have seen something made out of plastic material with pegs on it. I'll have to look around.

Very cute! See, everyone loves the Madeline Feeder!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Great Pelle, always nice to have more than one place. to shop.. Here in Texas being so hot I have to use the no melt kind. And I haven't found any nectar like the one from WBC search for Hummingbird Nectar. It may seem expensive, but it is concentrated and it goes a long way. Best to make a little at a time until you see the need for a little more anyway.

Now that I know how to space it all out...I can see my resident wren has found the wiggly mealworms. Not as clear as I'd like...I need to work on my distance adjustments on my camera. I planted some Asyssum out there today near were the wren comes.. He sure is checking it out now..Kinda like Itty does when I change something back there.. as if it is 'his' territory. I must have covered wren's bug/worm holes.. :>

That titmouse picture is wonderful! I think they are so cute with their little mowhawks and peach colored undersides.

I love the Madeline feeder too.

Love that closeup Titmouse you pictured! Fantastic and beautiful!

Deb - Did you ever see the blue parakeet again? I just thought of that and was wondering.

lilyfantn - That Madeline feeder is a real novelty! I've never seen one like it! Very cute and whimsical addition to your garden! :-)

Love all the bird photos. I haven't seen many birds except the resident birds the past 2 days. I wonder if they are all heading back north because of all this warm weather we've been having. 84 degrees today in January! I'd be confused too if I was a bird or a plant. lol

Hi Ellen and Welcome to the Forum! I love these fly through feeders!

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I had to run out and take pictures of the only feeder that I have not seen anyone else post. It is a coconut husk (I guess that is what you call the outer part) in the shape of a bird and the coconut is the feeder. The Downy Woodpeckers like it the most. Kim

That is cute! Where did you get it from?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

No my lil Budgerigar did not return... I was mainly hoping he would clear out of town before the storm that blew in that evening. The one visit was nice while it lasted. I have new faces out there all the time anyway. :> Eventually I will load them all in to a new Catagory on my site. So much to do!

I put the wren and warbler's worms and stuff under that big shrub in the corner. The plan is coming together more clearly as I go. I will try to map it out as I go to post on a thread in a coulple months.

Welcome, Ellen! Like that fly thru feeder and what a sweet dove. Sure looks cold there!

Kim, that is an interesting feeder! I think you win the prize for most unique!

lily, such a sweet titmouse. They are one of my favorites. How do you provide oranges? Cut in 1/2? I put apples out but haven't had much interest in them.

Went to WBU today and got a new flat screen feeder!!! Yipee! Also picked up a suet cake trying to attract more woodpeckers, thistle, nut mix and a cute bird shaped cookie jar (1/2 price Christmas) that will be saved for SIL next Christmas. DH hung the new feeder under the eave in front of the dining room window that looks out onto the (ugly) courtyard. We plan to put a youpon in the corner where the fountain had been (pole feeder there now) and add helleri hollies, azaleas, nandinas, etc. Hopefully, we will create a nice butterfly, hummer/bird area.

The new feeder...
Debra

Do you think squirrels would eat that Coconut feeder or is that a stupid question, lol.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Debra that is a good heavy feeder that should last a few years. good choice!!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yupon is a great choice for a bird garden Debra! They are low to the ground and provide great cover. When fledges are ready to come out they don't have far to fall.

Ellen I agree, that's a great fly through!

Here is a Mockingbird up in a tree watching the orange sun set. It cast a pretty color on her breast feathers. almost didn't know she was a Mockingbird until I zoomed in.

Thats nice Deb! I can see why it would be confusing till you got a closer look.

Speaking of fly-through...I had a Cooper Hawk fly through checking out my feeder birds today..He went away empty handed (taloned) this trip..

Hi Ellen! Welcome to the brand new bird forum!

I agree with fleurs... you win the prize for most unique! Very interesting! I used to poke orange halves onto a nail that I had nailed through a piece of wood and then on to the top rail of our deck. I don't have that set up anymore and have been squooshing orange pieces into the areas where branches of a birch tree meet the trunk. This isn't working well as the larger birds like the mockingbirds peck the oranges so hard that they fall out. So I'm going to think of (or buy) something else. I'm hoping some day to lure orioles as I have seen them in town - just not at my house lol.

Wow - I'm so jealous of all these great Hawk shots!

Ok, must add oranges to the mix tomorrow!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I have tried putting out orange for years and all they do is get moldy. nothing eats them. The Tanagers do love orange marmalade through

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks for all of the comments on the coconut birdfeeder. I am not certain which island but I believe Hawaii.

I like the new feeder, Debra. You can always drive about 15 minutes and come watch all of Downey's around here. I rarely look out the window and not see a some type of woodpecker. But, I am still on the lookout for the Ivory-billed...I only get to see the pair, in a picture. ;o)

Pell, we don't have much trouble with the squirrels. When we get up in the morning there is at least 1-3 squirrels sitting on the deck railing, waiting for nuts. If we don't feed them quickly enough, they will come over to the window and look in! I keep expecting one of them to knock on the door! But, just in case, I have the feeder close to the house and they don't climb on the house.

We have other animals that like to eat the birdseed at night so, I have three feeders that are the bottom of planters. I put them away at night and return them to the deck the next morning. While I was out taking pictures of the feeder, Charlie Squirrel decided to come for a visit. Since, I did not give him nut, he decided to eat a little of the bird's corn. You can tell that he is really scared of me. :o))

I can just picture that Kim..
Squirrels are a lot of fun!! I'm glad to have them around..

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL Yes they are!

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

duck, we had lots of woodpeckers when we lived in west little rock with woods behind us - downeys, red-heads, yellow-bellied, hairys, piliated, flickers, you name it!! Now here we are, in the woods, and they don't come to the feeders. We do see pileateds and yellow-bellied regularly in the woods. DH said he saw a "flock" of red-bellied woodpeckers the other day. Drove up our drive and several flushed up and flew off all at the same time. Wish I'd seen that! Maybe they just have too much to eat and don't need the feeders. I've watched a yellow-belly get cracked corn from the ground under the deer feeder. (heeeeeere leeeeeedle wooooodpeckerrrrrrrr........I have some speeeeecial suet for yoooooooou!)

Let me know if you see that Ivory Billed - I'll be right over!

Debra
