Show me your feeders!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I am the same as you Debra. Now that I live in the woods I see very few woodpeckers other than the Red-bellied. The others just don't come around. Once in a while I see a Pileated

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

My plan is to court them with suet.....

Savannah, MO(Zone 5b)

I love feeding the birds here at home. I received a new camera for Christmas and hope to put a few pictures on here of birds at my feeders. It's so much fun to feed them and watch them. Now I will be able to get some pictures of them too!

I put out lots of fruit for the birds. Raisins are also a big favorite. Maybe they are used to it. Here is some fruit from a fruit tray that was a little past its prime. Most of it got eaten. I love this picture because it looks like the chicadee is saying grace lol!

Debra, do you live in the newer subdivision that is up on the hill and has acres between each home? I have a friend that lives there. She has a wonderful view! I hope that you do, too!

Lily your chickadee is precious!!

Lilyfantn, LOL-so cute! I love the chickadees.

Cuckoo, I got a camara for Christmas, also. I am having so much fun taking pictures. Now, I can show and tell ;o))

Lily, the picture is spectacular. I can see why you are so fond of it!

duckmother everyone in my family has managed to get their own camera over the past few years and now I have my own digital camera that takes great pictures. I have a variety of foods out for the birds and have lots of different species. I do need to get some water out near my feeders though. I have a pair of mockingbirds that are so much fun to watch. They love the pieces of apple I put out for them!

Lily,

Great photo! I love the Chickadee saying grace! Adorable!

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

Love that peanut butter feeder! Now I'm going to have to look for someone's throw away tree (as we do artificial now), but I love that idea! Good thinkin'!

Lily, next time there is a photo contest, please enter the praying chickadee, and add your caption in the comments. Iove it! And, just a thought, maybe if you put a couple of small finishing nails where you stuff your orange slices it would help to hold them in place? I need to find a stump too, but it is getting a bit late now. I have a suet receipe that I need to pull out and post.
Kim, like the new feeder and Charlie squirrel is cute! I can say I don't think anyone would have a stranger looking feeder than your coconut one! It is definately a winner!
Debra, I can just hear you calling the birds, camera in hand! LOL!!

Quoting:
(heeeeeere leeeeeedle wooooodpeckerrrrrrrr........I have some speeeeecial suet for yoooooooou!)

Deb your hawk is georgeous, maybe he is looking for field mice?? DH and I saw what he said was a red tail yesterday just a block or so from here, but no camera with us! :o[

LOL, sounds like me out in the backyard in the morning. Dresses in pajamas, container of worms in hand calling the wrens and exchanging calls with the Chickadees.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

lily, that is the sweetest photo of the chicadee. Of course, he's saying grace!

deb, I have a "store bought" peanutbutter feeder. I doesn't have branches on it like the one in your link. If I can find a cedar the right size, I want DH to make one for me. Love the branches! My peanutbutter gets eaten, but not by woodpeckers. :(

duck, we do not live in a subdivision or on a hill, but I'm curious which one you are referring to. Do you know the name of the subdivision or where it is located? We live on private property 1.5 miles west of the 4 way stop in "downtown" Ferndale. LOL! If you ever get out this way, come see us! Because of your name, I'm guessing you live on one of the lakes? My dream is to live on the water somewhere. We have a very small pond, but it's not the same as a lake or ocean. sigh.......

pell, I can just see you out there now! LOL!

Debra

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Cockoo, same here, I am the last to get a digital camara. I have even written papers on our local ducks and was asked to submit photos of each...maybe, they will get them, now. LOL

Thanks for the comment, Shelia. I did a search but I could not find one. I was so hoping that anyone and everyone could get this different looking feeder. But, I will continue to look for them.

Debra, I have no idea what the name of the subdivision is but I think you can see one of the houses from the 4 way stop...if I am thinking of the right place. The 4 way close to the 4H center?
Anyway, it is a gated community...but the gate is never closed. lol Yes, I live at the beginning of Lake #1/the skiing lake. There is a brand new home directly across from the lake that is for sale. The lot is pie shaped...yuck...but the view is spectacular! The houses on the lake rarely take more than three days to sell. But, I think that this one is taking so long because of the lot...and the price is probably too high...for our state ;o)

Kim

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Kim, are you talking about the two "castles" on top of the hill with the creek below just inside the gate? The gates are custom made with vines and leaves welded on it. We pass it on the right on the way to our place. Those are the only houses on a hill that can be seen from the 4-way to my knowlege. The gate used to have two "T's" on it and, when the second house was built, rumors were flying that Tanya Tucker lived up there! LOL! How do those things get started???

Can't imagine any house on the lake staying on the market long. A friend waited years to be able to buy a house (she said you have to wait for them to die - LOL) on the lake. I believe it's the same lake as yours. They did a lot of remodeling and landscaping then, completely unexpected, her husband of 33 years wanted a divorce! I felt so sorry for her. She leased another house on the other lake and last I heard she was trying to buy one. Hopefully, she is on the lake permanantly again.

Here's the view from my house yesterday morning......no lake, but lots of wildlife!

Well Debra, I guess the house that I saw from the 4-way was not in my friend's subdivision. LOL I do not remeber a castle. Seems like it is called Ridgeway, Ridge Road, or Ridge Hill...sound familar?

I wonder if the friend that you are speaking of is a lady that used to walk everyday. She would always stop to see the ducks and/or Khaki Quackie. Anyway, one day she and her hubby just vanished. I never saw her home 4-sale or anything.

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

Finally got around to taking some pics of my feeders. I'll post the ones I haven't seen here yet.

This suet feeder has a cage around it and keeps the starlings and grackles out of the suet. It holds two suet cakes. Downy woodpeckers and nuthatches in particular seem to like it.

Geeze, after saying a while back up in the thread that I don't really have to worry about squirrels emptying the feeders, look who showed up today lol!

Here's "little piggy" crammin' in the seeds.

Here is my peanut butter log. It's about 5 years old - you can tell it's old from all the peanut butter oil that has soaked into the wood. Today we had a red-bellied woodpecker feeding at it. First one this year!

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

I made this ground feeder. It has a screen bottom. Whatever doesn't get eaten during the day is cleaned up by possums at night.

lily,

It's impossible not to think they are cute. They're so entertaining. If you ever have a left over pumpkin from Halloween, cut a small hole in the side and they will eat their way into the pumpkin. They are soooo cute sitting inside the pumpkin looking out! Great photo ops. Wish I'd remembered to do that this year....darn!

Here is another feeder I made for black oil sunflower seeds.

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

These hang above my garden where I don't want a mess on the ground. The tube has shelled peanuts in it and the other has sunflower hearts and chips.

That's a great peanutbutter feeder, goldfinch. Good job on the ground feeder. Some friends of ours have one similar with a solid bottom for their ducks. The deer and raccoons keep that one clean, too!
Debra

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

I love all your neat feeders goldfinch! I can't believe you made them all. Bravo!

Hi Debra! What a good idea - I have some pumpkins rotting as we speak in vvarious locations around the yard - compost pile, spots that don't get very fertile like in the back of the bed under the eave of the house. I just cover them with mulch while they rot. It adds to the soil.

Marlton, NJ

Nice feeders Goldfinch! I love the peanut butter log!

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

lily, that's a great idea for pumpkins. Would never have thought of burying them.

Marlton, NJ

Hey Guys do you think we should start Part 2 of this thread? Its hesitating a tiny bit for me and I'm on cable so I can imagine what its like for our friends on dial up.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

I'd vote yes.

You go pelle, just post it here when you get it all ready, count me in!

Thanks Sheila!

I've been reading about the use of baffles on all your poles. I had a major problem with squirrels too. Then I learned about the simple use of a very common children's toy called a slinky. If you don't mind the way it looks, it works great. I should say it works great for squirrels not raccoons. I have a raccoon that manages to climb it but not without some effort. I can tell when he's been around when the slinky has been stretched on. I manage to gather up the slack to put it back in place for any squirrel traffic. As a matter of fact, I learned about this clever tool right here on Dave's Garden.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Really?!!!! That's a new one! Would you explain in more detail? Is it just attached at the top and encircles the pole? Is it attached in any way at the bottom? Any photos of yours by chance? Fascinating!
Debra

Slidell, LA(Zone 8a)

Sorry no photo. I used a plastic coated twist tie to attach it at the top and bottom. If it gets stretched out too much over time they can be replaced for a mere $2.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks for sharing. Think I'll have to try that!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Ordine1 - That's a very interesting idea!!! I might just have to try that one myself! :-)
