I feel kind of bad. Being new to seed trading, I just sent the 15 packets plus garlic cloves. Didn't realize y'all would be sending dozens. It's not like I'm hurting for packets --- at last count there were well over 400 in my seed bin. But I wasn't prepared to do fancy labels & all on the packets like the rules say you should do, and I'm insecure about the seeds I've collected myself. Who knows if maybe they're a hybrid, or I cut the pods too early or something.
Do you all grow them for a year before you're convinced they're viable enough to offer?
summerkid don't worry about it. i didn't follow the rules either i guess. i sent seed packs with names of seeds only. and i was forgiven. lol.
i had too much of a lot of seeds and the ones i collected from my own garden were first time seeds and have never been tested for germination. i have no reason to think that they wouldn't germinate though. i will be testing them next year right along with the rest of you.
Summerkid and Mamajack,
I don't remember reading anything about fancy seed packets being required?
I didn't send anything fancy. Just seeds in little envelopes with their names written on the front.
The requirement was 15 packets of seeds.
You could send extras, but it wasn't required. So you did good. :-)
I've traded seeds off and on sense 1997 and haven't tested any seeds. We're all just gardener's sharing what we grow. We don't sell them, so we needn't worry about testing them first.
I've grown some great plants over the years from seed trades I've recieved from ordinary gardener's just like us. I strongly doubt many of them had been tested either.
I'll be thrilled with the seeds I get from everyone. And I'm sure everyone else will be too.
So relax, this is just suppose to be fun.
Joy
Thanks mamajack & Joy
Summerkid, you did really good, and so did everyone else... so don't feel bad.
I am new to gardening myself and ther is alot of info I don't know either...
Well off to get ready for church, you all have a great day.
Connie
Summerkid, no need to feel bad! Unless it's a requirement for the particular swap I'm in, I just label the packet with the plant name and cultivar. I haven't needed to go deep into details and all that. I think it's pretty safe to say that the majority of the swappers know that collected hybrid seeds are not likely to come true from seed and are willing to see what comes up. What you sent was fine and I'm sure no one would be disappointed! Just enjoy:)
Donna
PS There is still a spot or two on the 3rd Annual Valentine's Swap held by Sheran if you'd like to join. You'll see some familiar names over there:)

Summerkid - Mine are not fancy either! So you are not alone in that on this swap! :-)
i asked for instructions on that one dmac. but haven't heard. how many packs of seeds is it? and you are supposed to dress those up for valentines, right?
Usually when they are holiday themed you do them up for that holiday, so go all hearts and flowers. I would imagine since there are about 25 signed up, we'd need to come up with 25 packs for even stevens:LOL: I wasn't aware that Sheran was recovering from a medical thing so I'll just watch the forum for further instructions. Oh, and Sheran usually has everyone send some small-$1 or less gifty item that also gets swapped around. Sheran is a great host (like Connie) and I enjoyed that last one I participated in. Hope that helps:)
Thanks dmac, There is I believe 2 spots left on sherans valentines swap...
Since sheran is doing a valentines one, I am thinking of hosting a St Patty's one. Got to find out when it is lol... I am having a brain fart at the moment, as my grandaughter would say :o)
Connie
I have no problem whatsover with seeds being sent with nothing but the name. I'm certain Connie said in the instructions there was no need to do anything fancy with this swap.
I did put a note on the ones that I have that are hybrids that they may not be true to the parent. Some of the hybrids I sent, like the White Swan coneflower, the dwarf sunflower and Goldstrum blackeyed susan will come true. Nobody expects you to test the seeds for germination. My goodness. This isn't Burpee. (Actually, considering the lousy germination I've been getting from Burpee seeds, that is probably a plus.)
rofl@hart
My seeds have not been tested that I know of. (the ones from my garden haven't I should say) Most of the seeds I send have come from other traders, I don't have many of my own except my MG's and Cleome's.
Everyone cheer up and have fun :o) Thats what it is truely all about anyway ;-)
Kick back and ENJOY the Holidays...
I only stated to put what info you could on the packs to help beginners like me, that didn't know the info. And everyone has been so great and says if you have questions you can dmail them for HELP, and trust me, I will rofl Cause I need all the help I can get :-}
This has been great fun and looking forward to doing the St Patty's Day one...
Summerkid, when (if) you sign up for certain holiday swaps, everyone usually makes that holiday seed packs, by either printing some up or putting stickers on them..
Connie
I tried to test germination just for my own information once. I placed seed on damp layers of papertowel, put them in zipbags and labeled them all. It was kind of cool to see them unfurl but then I wasn't sure what to do with them, how long to let them stay in the baggies and it was off season. I ended up with little baggies full of moldy paper towels:LOL: Maybe they were meant to be sacrificed when you test them;)
Well, I did a little research and St Patrick's Day falls on a Saturday March 17th.
I will post the St Patty's Day Seed Swap after New Years Probably with in the first week of Jan...
Maybe the second week... So keep your eyes open :o)
That will give ppl plenty of time to have gotten there seeds ready to WS, and see what they still want...
If anyone comes across where I can buy the Jade Echinasea (here in the US), please let me know... It is really pretty and it's GREEN lol... I don't know if it is grown from seeds or bulbs or what...
Well I am off to take a napp b4 Church tonight...
TTYL Connie
Thompson and Morgan (US catalog) has the seeds for the green echinacea. Might also try Parkseeds.
Hart is it the same as this one???

Sorry, I was thinking of the green rudbeckia.
http://seeds.thompson-morgan.com/us/en/product/8605/1
That Jade echinacea is a patented plant so you're not going to find seeds anywhere. I see that Cotswold Gardens place list them (at over $7 USD per packet.) You'd be better off to buy plants. And since no one else lists seeds, I wonder if those really are legit Jade seeds?
Yet again, yes, we all lust after the newest plants but unless you want to buy plants, and usually at a premium price, you're better off waiting a few years and get them at a reasonable price. It's like not buying the $200 per plant newest daylilies. Wait a few years and you can get that same dayliliy for $10.
Nowadays all of the fancy new plants are being patented. That means you're not going to find seeds and plants are going to be expensive because the only legal source is the company that bred the plant.
Barb, Diane & Brenda Received your envelopes today :o)
See mama told you they would be here ;-}
Ana's should be here sometime next week. or the week after, not sure how long it will take...
Got my carpets cleaned, the tree up and decorated. This will be our next post from Connie:
"ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ"
Connie, we've posted a bunch of good holiday recipes in the Mid Atlantic forum. I highly recommend the apple cole slaw, which is very easy, and the lemon curd tarts, which are so easy you won't believe it.
lemon curd? what the heck is lemon curd? lol. it ain't no southern thang or a texas thang i can tell you that.
ROFL MamaJack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree
Lemon curd is nectar of the gods. It's made from lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar, butter and eggs.
It's an English thing. I got hooked on it via a friend who travels to the UK every year. It's not hard to make from scratch but you can usually find it in jars in the jelly section of grocery stores.
I use it between layers on yellow or white cakes too. You can just poke some holes in the cake and let the lemon curd soak in. It's sort of like a really good lemon pie filling. I usually can find it at the grocery stores but have also found it at TJ Maxx where they get alot of higher end gourmet food items. You can also make it fairly easily. This is a really good recipe www.recipezaar.com/37890
If you like lemon flavored anything, you'll love lemon curd=)
