Connie - I just sent my envie out to you today! Hopefully everyone will get theirs out to you before or by Dec. 15th. I can't wait to see what seeds I get! Thanks so much for doing this swap! It was fun! I got to meet some really nice folks here on this forum/thread. Hope to swap again with any or all of you!
This was a BIG undertaking, Connie! THANK YOU so much for all your time and energy in organizing and handling this swap! I hope you get lots of wonderful seeds from this swap as well! You deserve an extra serving of seeds! :-)
Happy Holidays everyone!
~Becky~
CLOSED: CGs LMW Seed Swap 2006_3 extras
Okay, I was just putting some of the mimosa pods in ziplock baggies and noticed holes in the pods, Sorry to those who wanted some of these...
I am throwing them all out... I am not going to risk sending bugs (ewwwwwwww)
Had hubby put them in the out side trash...
Really sorry about it :(
Connie
Connie,
I'm headed for the P.O. with my huge oversuffed envie! As usual, after I got everything packed up and sealed I realized I had forgottten to include my return envie, so I had to cut it back open and insert it! LOL! I'd forget my own head if it weren't attached!
JoAnn
Thanks Becky, I will let you know when they arrive...
A note about my last post (above) When I was putting this big envelope with the seed pods in a big plastic baggie, I saw (ewwww) some of the bugs crawling around... They are now freezing in the out side garbage can.
Connie
Oh JoAnn, I know EXACTLY how you feel... I'd lose mine to if it wasn't attached to my shoulders rofl
Connie and all,
Here's a few links about how to germinate specific plants. The first thing I do is go to PlantFiles with the common name to find the Latin name (if I don't know it), because the following sources are organized by Latin name. (Try to put as little information at a time when using PlantFiles; for instance, if you know the common name, try that first without anything else you may know about the plant)
1) The plant descriptions of http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/index.htm often contain germination information, along with how long a seed is viable and much more fascinating stuff. For instance, JL Hudson gives following advice for germinating castor beans:
"Soak seed overnight & plant in pots to sprout in about 1 - 12 weeks at warm temperatures. Plant out in May. Seed half life about 13 years."
2) an encyclopedic source is: http://tomclothier.hort.net/
3) another great one: http://www.onrockgarden.com/
Hopefully I'll be able to make a database of the plants I hope to start from seed this coming year, so that I can group the ones together that have similar germination requirements. At this point, I don't know how useful that will be to winter sowing - so many surprises there, but it will guide me in how close to the last spring frost to wintersow different things. I need to spread winter sowing out anyway - can't do all at once. If anyone hasn't been over to the Wintersowing Forum, now's the time to do it.
edited to add one more: http://www.theseedsite.co.uk/germination.html

Yeah, Connie, I don't think you can make a sweeping statement like "all tree seeds need" whatever. I've also found if you can't find a seed in one of the germination guides, do a google search for "(plant name) germination light" to see if the seed needs light or darkness to germinate and "(plant name) germination stratification" or "cold treatment" to see if they need cold. Like bluespiral said, you can always winter sow instead of putting seeds in the refrigerator.
I guess it's a moot point now, but I think you can bring any tender plant inside for the winter. I do that with my potted datura rather than let it die down in the winter. I don't know if there's any real advantage to this but it keeps my brugmansias company. LOL
My goodness we are all going to have gardens busting out with flowers next year, aren't we?
Joy, before I forget, did you get my request for the Eryngium agavifolium and yellow scabiosa? I'm sure you posted that you did but I missed it in all the postings.
I know how you feel hart, try ing to find something in these vast posts rofl... My poor eyes :o)
Thanks for answering, I decided I didn't want to take a chance with the locust so I pitched them..Even while in the freezer more holes showed up... So why take a risk...
I am sitting here sorting my seeds I received from another swap I was in and getting those listed and put away...
I still have lots of jugs to wash and get ready too :( Oh does it ever end? NO lol
I can't wait to see what all my garden beds are going to look like. I sure hope that they are busting out Hart. I hope I don't kill all these seeds I have been collecting...
I was talking to badseed yesterday and she was telling me about Strawbale planting. So I looked into it and showed my DH the pics of what it looks like and also printed out the instructions... DH wants to try a veggie garden using this method... Really looks very simple :o)
This is the link if you would like to check it out, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/631772/
Summerkid and basket_case, Got your envelopes today. and summerkid, my oh my :o)
Connie
Hart, Yes I've got you down for those. I'm going through all the posts today to make sure I have it all. As soon as I'm done, I'll post it to make sure I haven't forgotten anyone.
Then I plan to spend the rest of the weekend getting it all ready to send to Connie on Monday.
Real life has been hectic, one thing after another it seems. But things have settled down for now at least.:-)
Joy
I had hoped to mail mine out on Monday, but the funeral home where my father was buried is having a memorial service tomorrow for everyone who died during the past year. I really, really don't want to go but Mom does so I'm driving up to be there for her.
And Monday is grocery day, which takes all day, and Tuesday I have to finish some editing I'm doing for a friend so hopefully I can get all this packed up on Wednesday.
Connie I feel so bad for your friend's family, to lose someone so young especially. I think holidays are so hard when you've lost a loved one, but when they die so close to the holiday it must be worse. My friend, who is in her 70s, lost her grandmother on Christmas eve many decades ago and she said it's still a painful memory that comes back every Christmas.
Oh I know, My DH's dad past away on Christmas / Eve, right at midnight, many years ago. The only grand children he got to see were my 2... It is hard..
Ken and I went to a dinner the other night (not the Play) and the guest speaker got half way here and got a call and had to go back home, his DIL found out she had Lymphnoid (?) Cancer, so he felt his place was at home with his son and family.
I got news today Anna past away last night at 9 pm, she was 50... It had already reached stage 4 b4 they found it and they had given her up to 6 months to live. She only lived 4 days... (She found out about it on Monday)... I was in shock when I received the news today... So many deaths...
Connie
I'll have mine in the mail by Tuesday after work. I think I may have to go up to a bigger envelope since you were all so helpful taking my extras off my hands--only to make room for more!
So sorry to hear of all the losses. I know there is no "good" time for these things to occur but it's got to be a whole different experience for the surviors to have to go through these situations during the holidays. I think there is already alot of undue pressure to provide everyone with a picture perfect holiday and there must be some sense of...I don't know...guilt?, for celebrating the season. I lost my mom in 1987 and my dad in 1993, both in September. I was only 24 when we lost dad but it seems so long ago now. Oh, I still tear up randomly and have a bad day once in awhile thinking of things I'll miss out on, but the good memories and fun stories come alot easier now. I realized the other day at work that I must talk about my parents more than I thought I did because a guy I work with said he wished he'd had a chance to meet them, that they sounded fun. What a great compliment! And he was right, sure we had our issues, all families do, but I couldn't have asked for better--and I'm adopted, well adjusted and have no interest in the whole birth parent thing--I have a great family, both then and now. Good thing to be reminded of when these things happen:)

connie, i am sorry to hear about your friend's child and am so sorry for them. just recently in our town a 15 yr. old near genius boy was skate boarding down an alley behind his house. he shot out into the street and another kid..........17-18 hit and killed him. and just yesterday my sister's co-worker's 16 yr. old hit a 10 yr. old the exact same way. if any of you know any skater's please tell them about this. they are using that new board where they lay down on their stomachs. both kids were skating down alleys behind their houses and ended up in the major road that passes their neighborhood.
one more thing on a lighter note:
just found a pod of orange trumpet vine seeds...........campsis radicans. any takers? prob. can get 2-3 trades out of it.
Barb I would like some of the orange, I think I got white from a different trade back a month or so ago, orange would be pretty.
Connie
connie, look this plant up. i don't think it comes in white. i am always cautious with this plant. i love it but i would NEVER have it in my yard. lol. but campsis may not do for you what it does down here. but ask somebody who might know. i know it's weird that i offered these seeds and now am trying to warn you but i know there are many plants that are monsters in some places but not others. the problem with trumpet vine is not so much the vine but that it sends underground runners up 3 ft. away...........5 ft. away and suddenly there are plants everywhere.............down here. most folks down here grow crossvine if they like this type of plant. however when trumpet vine is in bloom what a sight to behold. there was a restaurant here that grew it around all sides but the one that faced the lake. really pretty and tropical looking. unless i hear back i will send some to you.
Mamajack, would you mind sending me some? I actually have gobs of the stuff growing here and tried to get seeds for a friend this year with no luck. I assume the birds beat me to them.
There is no such thing as white trumpet vine. There's orange, yellow and red. Maybe she's thinking of moonflower? It will spread like crazy (not as fast here as in warmer places like where you are) but it draws hummingbirds by the zillions here every summer when it's blooming. Besides, I have plenty of room and the stuff was obviously planted many, many years ago.
Never mind mamajack, I have the orange, and white, THe seeds I have say on it White Trumpet vine... So I guess I will be surprised to see what grows, I googled trumpet vine "white" and there are quite a few white flowers that fall under this title... So who knows what I have rofl... This is the link http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=Trumpet+Vine+White&btnG=Search
there are only 2 pages...
Connie
The only actual flower I found when going to those links was bindweed. You sure as goodness don't want to plant that stuff!! You'll be fighting it the rest of your life.
One link for white campsis (trumpet vine) was an ebay seller, although I didn't see the listing. I would say it's bogus. I did a regular google search for white campsis and came up with nothing.
mamajack - Would you also add some campsis radicans for me as well. (I'm #18) I know about this plant and have one in my yard that will be dug up in the Spring. I am going to transplant it into a large container (pot) instead of allowing the runners to take over my yard. Though it is not looking too good right now. I don't know if they go dormant when a cold snap hits them. So I want a few seeds just in case my vine doesn't make it. I'll also cut it back before it gets seed pods to keep it under control as well. I know the blooms come off the new growth. I've done a lot of research on this plant and know what I'm getting! And I have seen the flowers and it is absolutely beautiful!!! And I am also trying to attract the elusive hummers to my yard. (I have quite a number of "hummer" plants in my gardens currently.) I heard the Trumpet Creeper was listed #1 for attracting hummingbirds! So ....... add a few seeds for me, if you would please. :-)

Happy birthday, Mamajack!! Hope you're having a lovely day.
thank you all. i got up and found all of these birthday greetings on daves and couldn't figure out how anyone knew. i knew daves was responsible and then i saw the birthday postings on the side. i am 52 years old today. my kids are 10 and 12 and and tell me i am not cool. i used to be cool. i also am pretty sure i was a HOT mama................once. was anybody else a HOT mama once? the coolest i ever looked was when i wore skin tight black leather pants with a bustier made out of small pieces of torn leather AND knee high black snake skin boots. hahahahahahahahahahaa hey i still have that outfit somewhere. if i ever learn how to do it i am going to put that outfit on and post a picture of myself right on daves. i will wait till halloween though so it will look more fittin'.
beckygardener sounds like you know about the campsis and i will be happy to add those to your pack. and connie you nixed them. the white trumpet vine is prob. something with a white trumpet SHAPED flower and isn't campsis. does anyone grow campsis where it's cold? is it as bad in the cold?
Hiya Mama,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.... I hope you have a wonderful day.... Enjoy...
Hugs,
Susan
