First Frost/freeze

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Melanie~ Spiders are pretty smart, I am sure yours will be alright...she will fight for the babies for sure. :-)
Hazel that was an awesome way to deal with that situation, bless your heart!! I kinda had a similar experience a week ago, but barely hit and only boinked the lady's bumber.. She was the nicest person I have ever had an accident with. We just exchanged info, and the insurance took care of the whole thing without a report.
I will pray your parking kharma gets a little better girl, just in case you have to get out there at some point. I sure know how it is, and i rather not fight crowds either.

Josephine, which MG bush is it? I love MGs, but I'm needing some that dont choke other plants out. Maybe I will try to establish a tri-color convolvulacae early next year... is it that one or another?

Deb, I am happy that your was a small booboo with little damage too. It's good to know that the insurance company took care of it without a police report. After the lady told me that I needed to call the police, I thought that maybe the procedures had changed. The poor little girl just kept apologizing for hitting me. I finally told her that I was sure that she didn't do it on purpose and that accidents just happen. I suppose that I am glad she hit me and not some jerk that would have made her feel worse than she did. When I have to go shopping, I try to go when most people are at work so that the parking situation isn't so bad. I am amazed at all of the traffic during the week and during working hours now.

Deb, this the bush morning glory that I have from Hazel; http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/52996/index.html
When it makes seed I will give you some.
Josephine.

Good point hazel, I often think of it like that too. In fact in most cases I find a reason to be thankful and I find in turn I have more because I was looking for it, that's all! I am glad it was you instead of a road-rager too, sigh...

According to the legal advice we are given, the nice lady and I did it all wrong. Your never suppose to admit fault, (I did)... and never supposed to say "I'm ok, I'm fine, I didn't get hurt in any way" to the person who hit you.... (she did) LOL!

Yet it worked out perfectly, go figure :-D

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It is beautiful Josephine, yes!
Put me down for some, and Thank you!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol debnes....I know I know....I truly am worried about my mama spider. I worried about her mother in the same bush last winter....and like htop, I'm also worried about my lizards and geckos..lol. And I have chrysalis' hanging all over the fence in the backyard... I wish I could bring everything into the warmth without causing alot of broohaha...lol.

1604 can be a nightmare! Since I live at Braun and 1604, outside of the loop, I have to commute back and forth each day down 1604 to IH10 and DeZavala. Yikes, always seems to be a near-miss everyday.

What kind of BFs are in all those chrisalids Melanie?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Melanie, you live really close to me. I live off Culebra ... a hop, skip and a jump from 1604. (about 2.5 miles).

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

htop, I'm so glad everyone is ok! I was in an accident about eight years ago... A little high school girl was taking her friend home. She had just gotten her license and it was the first time her dad let her drive HIS car. She was in a left turn only lane, I was in a go-left-or-go-straight lane. I turned left, she went straight. Oops.. She was SO scared! No one was hurt except my little car. Her insurance paid for everything without any trouble, and I was just so glad (after the shock!) that she hit me instead of someone who wouldn't have been nice to her. I think the rule about calling the police is pretty new - at least it just started a couple of years ago with our insurance company.

There's a warm front coming through this week and it's supposed to get back into the 70's during the day and only in the 40's at night. I've enjoyed (sort of) having a "winter", but I'm ready for spring now! LOL

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

goodness htop, you ARE close to me. :) We shop at the HEB on Culebra and 1604 so I may have bumped into you a few times if you shop there as well, lol.

I think that most of the remaining chrysalis' are Gulf Frits, Debnes. The remaining Sulphurs hatched out only a few days ago. But I have at least 10 hanging on my backyard fence.

I'm sooo glad that we'll be seeing some sunshine again! These cloudy, chilly days are hard on my emotions. Being stuck inside, looking forlornly out of the windows onto my little flowerbeds is tough, lol. But the sunny thought of Spring makes me smile deep inside again. :) I'll have to move my plants back outside into the sun as well.....

Deb & Kenya, my Duranta's have come back for 2 or 3 years, but those winters were harsh. I've got a small one potted and put in the garage, just in case. Mine put out new shoots last month so I cut a couple off and put them in water to see if they'd root. I'm still waiting.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yeah Paige I hope mine makes it alright..It should with how deep I had to dig to sink it in, plus the coverage of newspaper and leaves.
Park seed is having a dollar seed sale if anyone is interrested.. Look in their perinnials too, there are several nice colors of Milkweed..

Marylyn_TX, this little girl was really scared and so embarassed too. I rememmber the first wreck in which I was at fault. I felt so stupid. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. The fog is pretty thick here this morning. I worked at pruning the perenials that had received freeze burn yesterday. I had to cut back the lantanas so that the pring bulbs and annuals which are coming up have room to grow. The bluebonnets are coming up as well as the larkspur. Radar showed the Houston area receiving some rain. I sure wished we had had some here. It looks like this will be a great week.

Melanie, I usually shop at the H.E.B. at Grissum and Tezel Road; but I sometimes go to the one there on 1604. Maybe we can get together one day to chat in person.

konkreteblond, I rooted some duranta cuttings last year. They took a little longer to root than some of the other plants so don't give up on them. Mine is in a very large container. Each past winter I wrapped it with frost cloth which is quite a job with the way the branches grow. This past freezing weather, I was just too tired to cover it. Even though the temperatures were in the upper 20s for a couple of nights and for many hours at a time, it showed no damage and is still blooming. Do yours freeze all the way back to the ground?

Deb, thanks for telling us about the Park Seeds sale.

Stephenville, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Paige,

Your duranta cuttings should root with no problem. It actually has been one of the easier plants for us to propagate by cuttings. Just FYI, DH and I didn't have any success germinating duranta seeds though. They may need some sort of special treatment. Regardless, it is kind of irrelevant because of our success with the cuttings. I agree with htop on the speed at which durantas root, though, they do take their time.

I am heartened to read of the successes had with placing the duranta in the ground. They are such wonderful butterfly/hummer attractants. I have a place in mind for mine in beds on the southwest side of our house, but have been too chicken to put them in the ground in the past two years for fear they would only be an annual for me in our zone. Finding replacements for them in our area is impossible and I wasn't going to risk losing them after one season. However, I am now encouraged and believe I will give it a try this next spring. But just in case we happen to have the freeze of all freezes next winter, I will also keep some pots of duranta cuttings going in the greenhouse as replacements, just to be safe!

Thanks everyone for your input.

YW Hazel,
I got carried away on my order, lol...Maybe I can make a list and share what I don't need here in the forums.

The Yellow Brug I cut down is drinking lots of water and looking pretty healthy. It is so heavy I had to weigh down the vase to keep it from tipping...I would love for it to make it through to Spring.

I agree Kenya, the cuttings are a good way to go.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Deb, that would be nice. :o)

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm definitely waiting on the cuttings. I've had great luck lately rooting things by just sticking them in water in a jar in my bathroom window.

My goofy yellow Brugs sat on the front porch all year and did nothing but look scraggly. As SOON as I put it in the garage because of the coming freeze a few weeks ago, it started blooming!! I think it has about 6 blooms on it now and tons of new buds! What is up with that?! My garage has never smelled so good! lol
