First Frost/freeze

35 here and falling at 6:30pm. The greenhouse is so far holding on at 44. Should I cover my rosebush or can it just go to sleep for the winter?

Kim

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Kim,

I never cover mine, we're in the same zone.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

We had our first freeze last night with 25° and are expecting 20° tonight. Brrrrrr! All five cats are in the sunroom tonight, and even the Great Pyr is happy to be inside. She slept in our bedroom last night, but she got on the tile and as close to the outside door as she could. That probably lowered the temp enough that she was comfortable.

My "keypad" is integrated into the keyboard on my laptop and the alt 0176 does not work for me even with the number lock on. I use the copy and paste! Frustrating, but I will keep working on it.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks...I'll just let it be then. It's my first and only rosebush.

You just trim it back to 1/3rd it's size around Valentine's Day is all I've been told and it works for me. =)

Alt keys work different on laptops Pat. Let me find that site and post it for you--I have both and always am using the wrong one on the wrong computer. I have to do lots of strange things for science; like electrical resistance (ohms Ù)--just google alt symbols on laptops--you'll get a million. =) Debbie

I see ohms symbol doesn't translate from xp to Dave's; computers, gotta love 'em.

Well, it is 46 here now..Have a freeze warning in effect. As a new gardener, I am so nervous. I probably took in more of my container plants than necessary, but I figured better safe than sorry. I have a new seedling Brug a friend gave me from his prolific producing one! It has done so well..I would hate to lose it..or any of my plants for that matter..I have, in the ground, 3 Broms, 2 Oyster Plants, 4 Hibiscus, 2 Asian Lilies, a Chilean Mandevilla(forget the actual name), and a Japanese Purple Honeysuckle..Yall think they will make it? I went to every plant file for each of my plants, shrubs, and trees..Seems they will be ok..but then again, I am new..and stay bout half confused until some wonderful, experienced gardener helps me out..Hence, asking my question of them surviving..It's only supposed to be freezing tonight...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Down to 28 here at 10.30 , they are predicting the low 20s, hope all will be well.

Ingleside, TX(Zone 9a)

I have gotten waaaaaay to used to the normally mild winters down here..It's funny..Grew up in NE Texas..so dealt with ice..and occasional snow..Spent a few years up in Virginia..had LOTS of snow and ice..and temps at or near 0! Until we were up there, I truly had NO clue about cold..But since moving down to the Coastal Bend of Texas..if it gets down in the 50s at night, I am ready for a fire, crank up the heat, and my toasty toe warming socks!! Funny how much colder it seems at that temp down here..Oh well..I hope everyones plants do well..Gotta take 5 and put the flannel sheets on the bed...brrrrrrrrrr!!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Schools are open here in Keller ISD, but I'm keeping my 3 kids home anyway. They have very good attendance and their grades are great... I'm sure I can find something for them to do here. Mwahahaha!

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

This morning I woke up to 28 with the greenhouse holding at 40.....so all is well here so far.

:) Kim

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

It's below freezing and in the upper 20's at this time. At least we don't have that horrible wind! If the roses and hibiscus freeze on top, that's ok w/me. Any pots I have have been pulled into the garage. Except the plumerias. If they die, they die. They are just too heavy for this lil' ol' lady to move and my DDH is down at our place in Palacios. I don't have the strength/stamina to be moving heavy things around. It's just not worth it!

Ann

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

24 here this morning, things are well frozen, but it is sunny.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

I didn't cover one single thing. It was dark and rainy when I got home last night and DH was not inclined to do so. Anyway, this summer was my first gardening experience and I researched and learned an INFINITE amount of information from my DGer friends. However, I invested quite a bit of money this summer on plants, seed, supplies, etc., and have decided that this will be my last year spending so much on flower gardening. So whatever survives will get propagated for next summer. I'm going to continue specializing in growing the Sago Palms which was truly a wonderful experience for me. So much diversity growing this tortoise of a plant! And, I'm going to try my hand at self-pollination and seed production. I want to grow them beautiful and healthy, and give them away each year as christmas gifts! Didn't realize how valuable a mature Sago Palm is, until I learned about the slow growth pattern. It's sort of like finding a huge pony-tail palm that's grown for 10-15-20 years!

I have decided to become a VEGETABLE FARMER instead! I've got five brand new Earthboxes, and have moved into research on veggies and fruit. I've ordered my seeds from Johnny's and they're on the way. It makes more sense for me to grow something productive to give away to friends, relatives, and total strangers who can literally benefit from the "FRUITS OF MY LABORS."

So, next summer I'll grow Sagos, caladiums, coleus, and ferns in the garden. And tomatoes, squash, bell peppers, green beans, okra, Romaine lettuce and spinach in my Earthboxes!

We had 26° this morning. Nice sunshine. As soon as it warmed up I went out and uncovered the roses. They will need to be covered again tonight. Looks like all the plants are okay. I'm so glad there's no wind today. The wind yesterday made it feel so much colder.

Turbo and Gymgirl I bet your plants will be fine. Sometimes I think the plants are hardier than we give them credit for.

We put the finishing touches on our new greenhouse just as the sun was going down last night. We didn't have a heater yet. My newly rooted Clerodendrums, Ugandese and Musical Notes got nipped pretty bad. Should I prune of the brown/damaged branches now, or wait until spring? Thanks for your help.

The heater on the porch kept the temperature at 40°. Yea! Some of the roses that were blooming in the yard look a little sad.

Hope everyone faired OK with the "Artic Blast." Another cold one coming tonight.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I woke up at 7:00 AM this morning...and my bird bath was iced over...lol Although it was 27°..everything seemed to look ok ...as much as I could see running off to work. But I'm still keeping things inside a few days and some things covered outside. Keep warm tonight!

Mitch I think your hibiscus' will be okay. They will look awful through the winter but will come back out in the spring. I have been overwintering mine in our storeroom and it will get from 35° to 40° in there and they have survived every year.

Lin

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

A couple of my plants liik darker green like wilted lettuce...:- ... Oh well.. I will go out now and cut them down and put some newspaper with heavy mulch over them. That should keep whats left of the life in them....I'm crossing my eyes, hehe.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Thanks Lin! They are green, just look really bad...

Dallas, TX

Wow I missed everything again. :) I would have loved to have been looking out the window when all this was going on. Friday I saw a lot of stuff wilted.. I hope I havent lost too much ... especially my Blue Bird hibiscus. Mitch I had the Brug on the carport , but I guess I did not have close enough inside.
Dawn thanks for the pics of the snow ... Gym girl you left those Sago Palms out int he cold? How did they survive?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Try it and see if it makes it - get it inside!!

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Sylvia et al,
The Sago pic is from the summer! However, yes, they will stay outside for the winter. They're pretty hardy, which is why I'm so fascinated with them. The temps so far haven't hurt them one bit. As the season sets in though, I'll probably gather them closer together and cover them over with some sort of lean to. Problem is giving those broad leaves room to spread without gettting punctured like a pin cushion!

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

We had another fairly bad freeze last night. It was 27 ° before I went to bed. Don't know what it did after that...forgot to reset the memory on my indoor/outdoor thermometer last night. I don't think the weather people knew this one was coming. I feel bad for all the people up in the midwest who are having a power outage. My FIL was without power (and any kind of heat) for two days up there. We didn't hear anything about the outage on the news until yesterday.Fortunately, DH's brother, unable to reach him on the phone, had heard a lot earlier than that and packed up a generator and took it down to him. So yesterday when DH called, they had already gotten the heat going.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Below freezing again ... This is the longest period of below freezing temps we have had here in San Antonio for a couple of years. I am afraid we be in for a long winter. The weird thing is that a lot of my plants do not show freeze damage even though I didn't have the time nor energy to cover them as I usually do.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It froze here again last night, I have many plants in the garage that need to see the light, I hope I can take them out for sun bath soon.
My phlox had surprised me, it is still green, and the elderberry too.
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Josephine, I know what you mean. I have a lot of plants in my house which doesn't receive much light and have been wanting to put them back outside for some sun and water. The nights continue to be very cold so I can't unless I drag them out and then back in. My phlox are doing well too. I am really surprised that yours are doing well because it is so much colder up there where you live.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

I hope we are having our cold weather before the first of 2007. I really don't like cold weather and the very low humidity. Makes my skin and nails crack and the rest of me cold to the bone.

Ann

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Ann, I know what you mean. I am wearing long johns, socks, a sweat shirt type nightshirt and a sweat shirt over that in the house. I used to infrequently wear even a coat during cold weather. I guess my old bones just don't like the cold anymore.

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

It's very cold in our part of Texas. 2l° on our front porch early this morning. The frost is so heavy it looks like a light snow. Good news, the sun is shining! Hopefully it will warm up to at least 50 maybe a little more.
Yesterday I enjoyed watching four deer mosey across our pasture and on into the woods. They are so pretty. I also watched a red breasted hawk sunning himself in the pasture near our house.

Lin

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

My DDH who moved to Houston to escape Wisconsin's cold weather is freezing! At least he doesn't have to shovel snow!
