I'm not going to get to see my Brug blooms. It will freeze hard before they fully open. sigh
Debbie I will try the Rangoon Creeper cutting in the spring. Thanks for the tip. I think this is my favorite vine.
Lin
First Frost/freeze
Really 32 before they open? The next 10 days for RedOak look good and clear, 39 is the lowest of the low...
My Lavender bush is putting out a ton of spikes right now and is loving these cooler temps....plus, my Fairy Duster is popping seeds out everywhere...thanks in part to those few rain showers that we had a month or so ago. lol, I was leaning down close to the duster and got popped on the cheek as a seed pod shot its seeds out...lol :D
Melanie
TxT ~ could you elaborate on a Fairy Duster please?
Must be one of these, which one do you have Mel?

Mimosaceae Calliandra...I believe a "Pink Fairy Duster," debnes... :) Absolutely wonderful little shrub until it decides to pop a seed pod and wonk you in the face..lol Very pretty after it rains...for some reason, rain drops seem to accumulate on the leaves. :) I think they are related to Acacias as well....
Melanie
actually, debnes...I've never seen it drip any sort of nectar....and I'm out there allll the time, lol. At least I don't notice it on the rocks below the wee branches. But the flying flowers sure seem to enjoy the puffy blooms. :)
Melanie
Well there it is..The butterflies see the dripping. The puffs remind me ot Texas Mist, which is full of nectar... Guess not visibly dripping, lol. It is a butterfly magnet though.
I love your pink/white one..beautiful plant!
Melanie~ if you have any extra seeds, I will trade you something. LMK
I'm collecting seeds right now...debnes, hence the cheek popping...lol... I'll dry them out a bit more and send some to ya if you'd like. They make a great xeriscape plant for drought persistent areas. Dmail me your address and I'd be glad to mail ya some... :)
Melanie
What an Awsome Red Deb, cant believe that grows in the Bronx ... actually I cant believe anything grows in the Bronx. lol Do it grow here?
Yes Mitch. We live way out in the country and it always gets colder here. We had a very heavy frost this morning. Local weatherman is predicting 30 deg. for outlying areas tonight.
Lin
They are even predicting 32 for outlying areas down here tonight.
I should be well above a freeze for the next week at least... I am more then ready for my first hard freeze so I can get out there and take bush cuttings!
WOW Deb! you could put a forest in there.
lol yeah Sylvia, I just added a couple more sprigs to it.. If I do any more it should be in a different container, don't ya think? Someone sent me some Lady M Passionvine cuttings. I put a couple of them in with the Blue Crown. Then I filled a bottle with pearlite and water, and stuck a couple in there. The LadyM cuttings were from the middle of the vine somewhere, not the very tip. So I don't know if they will root or not, but I'm giving it a whirl.
Someone just sent me some Scarlet Milkweed if anyone wants any, she sent quite a bit extra. *And I finally have a small lot permit for getting seeds from Canada. It's good for 3 years, and I'm thinking it will be worth all the trouble. It only took a week and a half, but I called a lot, lol.
How is your new place Sylvia?
Deb, do you know the scientific name of the Scarlet Milkweed?
I would like to try it, if possible.
Josephine.
Josepine just let me know >
Asclepias incarnata is one of them Swamp MW (the one she calls scarlet, but it is actually a deep pink color.)
I also have some Asclepias curassavica Blood-flower
They are ready to go out in tomorrow's mail Sheila!
o/
Sheila ... now I know what that long dried piece is outside in a pot ... my Goldenrod. You guys should have cut that back too. I hope it survives. Sheila do you know what I am thinking for out front? Do one great big bed of colorful Texas natives ... that would be awsome! Are listening Josephine? lol Put that Texas star right in the middle. Sheila do you think they got the Texas star. Oh boy I know you are going to get tired of me asking what I got out there. and the Lady in Red...and that purple Spirea thing I got from Linda. ... and all the Daylillies in fron of those shrubs....yeah I just made up my mind what I am going to do out there! :)
Deb you could save me a piece of that too. lol
Deb, I would love to have the Swamp milkweed, Asclepias incarnata please, I sure hope it does well for me, it is beautiful. I already have the Curassvica.
Thank you very much.
Josephine.
Great Josephine, I will send it out with Sheila's today..
:-)
Everything looks like snow this morning here. We dropped into the 20's last night. This will definitely finish off the cannas and banana trees along with some other plants.
Lin
Sylvia~ you talking about the Passionvine? Sure I will save you some.. I will make sure it will root first.. Here is the method I found to root things. I am going to try rooting some of the new growth from the Aristochlia Ted gave using this method too.

stayed about 35 here, but just over I35 in Lancaster they hit 28 - so it is getting closer...
It got down to 28 for me. Luckily I watched the news, and hauled all nine pots of roses toward the house and threw a sheet over them and the herbs. I'd just planted a weeping butterfly bush Sunday; it's about 10" tall. I put a pillowcase over that one. I uncovered everything early this morning. I hope they make it.
Now that kids are not a factor, neither are single beds, so I have some nice flannel sheets for the garden. Of course, last night was most likely the only time I'll drag them out! Or... we could have a freak snowstorm anytime between December and February. It keeps you on your toes down here.
We got to 31 for several hours here near Katy. Nothing seems to have suffered but we won't really know for a few days or weeks.
Ann
I didn't realize the water in one of my small bird baths was partially frozen until I went outside to uncover the plants. I was surprised.
Brigid your plants should be okay since you covered them. I went ahead and planted my new roses from Merrygro in the garden. It was so nice Saturday I worked outside all day. Got a lot done. I mulched the roses real well with hay. I checked them this morning and they look great.
Lin
Got down to 30 at my house last night, covered the tomatoes and a few things up front but left the rest. The thunbergia got nipped and the banana is looking brown, everything else looks ok right now. I'm definitely a "fend for yourself" type of gardener....if it'll come back from the ground, I let it get zapped. Even a few that I am unsure of I do that with. I've got too little time to run about covering everything. All the tropicals were sitting in the greenhouse which was at a balmy 37 this morning....need to get another heater in there for cold nights. They all look ok though.
:) Kim
DEB, I hav loads of Passion Vines, I want some of that yellow gold stuff ... if you have some left. :)
Sylvia, look back in the thread, is it the picture that I posted of the Silky Gold Milkweed that you want? Remember it is the one that I bought at Martha's Bloomers in CS? If so, get ready, I will give you about 10 or 12 plants. I will take some cuttings of my large plant this weekend. It has one last burst of blooms and seed heads now and I have been putting it off. I also have little plants all over my flower beds from where I spread the first seeds in the summer.
Sylvia, you're crackin me up... did you get my dmail? I was trying to say Sheila is the one with the Silky Gold Milkweed. I have the Incarnata which is deep pink, not gold.
:-O
Congratulations Deb!!!!
.......at least my Brug is still alive. :) Shall I put it in the store room outside?
Thx Josephine! It's my first one to own, ever! I was thrilled to see the bloom, and more that it was yellow! Do cuttings take well on this one?
Did you and Sheila get the seeds I sent?
