Poppies

Ennis, MT(Zone 4a)

I would love a poppy forum as I am quite obsessed with them. I grow thousands of Shirley poppies each year, plus a few other varieties. I am a professional artist and paint primarily from flowers I grow, particularly poppies.

wow, mulchmania.. those are beautiful. I bet you could fill a few shoeboxes with seeds if you took the time to collect them. I thought I was doing fantastic with my little snack size baggie with the hefty amount in the bottom. LOL I bet you have lots of people eying your garden.

LhasaLover,
Thanks for the kind words. Actually this is the first year I have successfully collected seeds, believe it or not! It is so darn windy here, by the time the pods are fully ripe, all the wee seeds have scattered everywhere. This year I harvested a lot of them barely still green without the openings under the cap. I think they will probably have a decent germination rate, now that I have figured out how to get some.

I only harvested from my large round garden where the Shirley poppies have white picotee edges, or are white centers blending to color on the outer edges etc. My favorite garden. We will see what they do, I am digging up part of the big rectangle which got a bit out of control and will try the seeds in there.

I had the biggest bloom of poppies ever this summer and I people were slowly driving by, stopping, and so on. People we did not even know would stop us in the supermarket and comment on them!

I'll add a pic of a painting I did that became an architectural element in a home. I love poppies backlit by the dawn light. My favorite time of day in the garden.

I'll have to agree with Criterologist on limiting the species-specific forums. As much as I love poppies I feel they could be featured as well on 'Annuals', 'Perennials' and/or 'Propagation". Certainly, it would be more convenient to just click over to a "Poppies" forum, but then why not one for pansies and carnations ? I am a poppy collector, they are my favorite flower, I grow a lot of them, and for myself don't see a need for a Poppy thread. Just my opinion, which I hope is as meaningful as everyone elses.

I'm not voting yay or nay, but if poppy people ever need a home for all kinds of poppies --annual, perennial & illegal :)) hop on over to the Cottage Garden Forum -- we're all crazy about poppies and you can't bore us to tears!

I didn't know bunnies ate poppies...maybe that's why I never got them to grow -- LOL on the bunny relocation program, Diann (Ticker). I'd like to find some cats and lease them on a weekly basis for sort of a "send the bunnies to heaven" program. Maybe I'll put some tuna fish out in spring and see if I can get any to consider my casa their casa.

Meanwhile -- Montana Mulchmania! AWESOME! No wonder people are stopping! I can't believe they haven't been begging seeds from you. The painting is wonderful, too. I wish I could do just even a little doodle on the side of a pot that would resemble a flower instead of a blob, much less have somebody plan their entire home decor around something I painted!

Bunnies seem to like only certain kinds of poppies. I have bunches of Papaver rupifragum, Papaver pilosum, and Papaver lateritium, but the rabbit ignores those and only eats the Papaver amurense (which I have only one plant of). It waits for the buds to form and then CHOMP.

I would like a poppy forum because I am interested in the more oddball varieties, but I don't think enough people care about this plant family, even though it is quite big. A while ago I posted in I think it was the perennial forum with a question about various Papaver seeds from Jelitto (which has a large number of unusual papavers) and got no replies at all. As for the annuals, these usually germinate easily enough that you can literally throw them on the snow and they will grow in the spring. I have done this with California poppies (Eschscholtzia californica) and regular P. somniferum. The only poppies I have had a hard time germinating were Papaver glaucum var. aurantiacum and Papaver setigerum. In both cases they took a long time to germinate, came up spindly, and finally kicked the bucket en masse. I had bought P. setigerum, which I was looking for for years, from Chiltern's, but I see they don't have them this year.:(

I have cleared out a large plat adjacent to my veggies.

I will plant 8 to 10 variants in the same soil.

We will see what happens.

Pictures ... if I'm proud !!!!

Merry Christmas, and it really looks like Christmas here. 5" of new snow. I am taking a break now from shoveling. With my angina I have to be careful. Altogether I have more than 200 feet of paths to be shoveled to different areas. have to keep a trail open to the compost and to the chicken house. then have to shovel off an area off the deck (I clear part of deck) to feed the quail.

I am interested in where you get most of your unusual poppy seed paracelsus. I too like the more different varieties.

I just got the Select Seed catalog today and they have several kinds of poppies.....Danish Flag, Flemish Antique, Venus, Heirloom, Ladybird, Laurens Grape, White cloud, Black Peony, and several others. email is Selectseeds.com........

Brimfield, MA(Zone 5a)

Yep, Danish Flag has a few different names and each name takes a lot or research to find a reputable seller... there are several heirloom poppies with different names and descriptions that require research to include in specific zones. There are too many varieties, too many zones and too many growing conditions, that poppies need and deserve information for each of us to try and grow in our area.

all the more reason to have a poppy forum

To put it as my eleven year old daughter would ...

Dave, "you are the bomb"

Happy new year.

I'm going to the poppy forum :)
