It's that time of year again! The 2006 DG Photo Contest!

The 6th annual DG Photo Contest is now open for contestants to upload their favorite photos they've taken. You can see the past contests here:

http://davesgarden.com/contest/

and the link for the 2006 contest is here:

http://davesgarden.com/contest/2006/

Each member is allowed to upload a maximum of two photos into each category. On December 1st, the entries will be closed and voting will begin (voting is handled by the membership at large, and how to do that will be explain when voting begins). Winners will be announced on or around December 15th.

Over the years we've seen some beautiful shots and I'm sure this year will be no exception.

Have fun!

Dave, what happened to the Wildflowers category?

Josephine.

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

and Hosta?? :(

Susahn
=^..^=

We chose to limit the categories this year to try to prevent the category burnout many members felt last year. Just choose the category closest to what you have. For example, hostas would go into perennials and wildflowers would be good in annuals and/or perhaps garden landscapes.

Dave,
Do we need to resize our photos?
Or
Will they all be resized automatically?
The reason I ask is that I just tried to upload a photo and forgot to resize it.
It took up the entire screen!! LOL

Thanks Dave

Cambria, CA(Zone 10a)

Dave, I had a little bit of a problem after uploading a photo getting back to the list of categories. Any way to do that without just hitting back arrow a few times?

GardenGuyKin, it will resize your images just like the forums do.

stellapathic, I added a new link to that page that gives you the option to return to the main page (where are the categories are shown)

dave

Cambria, CA(Zone 10a)

Thanks so much.

Also, I'm assuming the rules are the same as previously, that any photo other than one you have entered before are acceptable? I didn't enter anything last year and have several from 2005 I might want to enter. That's ok, right?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Question:

Would daylilies fall in the rhizomes category or perennials?

Donna

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

stellapathic: Any of your own, original images that have not been previously entered are "fair game" for the contest.

DonnaA2Z: Daylilies = perennials ;o)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks!!

Donna

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I suspect that some pictures may be appropriate in more than one category. In that case, I assume it won't really matter which one we put it into. Yes?

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Nap, if that's the case, submit the pic in the category with the least entries. Your odds will be better there, lol.
Andy P

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Aah, good. I may send in mine for the first time this season!

Gent, Belgium(Zone 8a)

Pictures that have been send in threads (not previous contests), are these not valid ?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Stupid question... what category would you put lizards in?

And like bonitin asked... pictures that we have submitted to Plant Files or posted in Photos... do they qualify?

Donna

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Of course they qualify, you took them, they are fair game for this photo contest. If you couldn't put an image in the contest that had been posted in a thread or uploaded to Plant Files, then I think there wouldn't be much, if anything to submit, for me anyways. LOL

Lizards, my first thought was wildlife. Unless it's a pet, then Domestic Pet, Animal.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Well, I do talk to the lizards... and some of them I've even given names, as they are uniquely identifible and usually stay in the same area. But, I can't really call them my pets I guess.

Thanks,
Donna

DFW area, TX(Zone 7b)

Question: How do I see the pictures that have been
submitted ? I get the page that says how many entries
there are in each category, but can't find where they are
posted. Please help. Thanks.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I don't think they are available for viewing until the submitting time has ended and it's time to vote for our favorites.

DFW area, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh, I guess that's what it must be, but doesn't that make
for a lot of pictures to look at in a short time ?
Well, I'm willing to wait if I have to.

Thanks, mgh.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

No prob, Mahnot. I agree, a lot of pics in a short time, but I think it gives everyone a fair chance that way.

Two weeks for viewing/voting on an intelligent reduction in the overload we had last year will be a piece of cake by comparison.

Goodyear, AZ(Zone 9a)

Are cactus considered perennials then?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

edited to say I found the answer to my question lol

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Dave, I'm assuming there will be only one winner per category. If so, can you list the 2nd and 3rd place winners as well? It would be encouraging for the runners-up to know they were close.
Andy P

Definitely! I think we've always done 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I have never enter the photo contest before. I was wondering if the picture has to be an 06 shot or can it be from your older personal favorites? I hope everyone has had a great Thanksgiving!
Teresa in KY

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

It can be from any year, as long as it hasn't been submitted to a previous DG photo contest.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Dave.

Teresa, I believe any of your pics that you have not previously entered into a DG contest is fine.
One of mine was a little older, too.
Andy P

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks, that really broaden my selections!

Schererville, IN(Zone 5a)

I messed up already.....I guess I didn't pay attention or it just didn't sink in.....I already posted two hosta picture's in the *perennial* category, but have other perennials I wanted to post that would have gone in that one.......:-(......I assume you are doing it this way to shorten how many picture's people post......Just two per category.... I have to really look at my pictures and pay attention.....LOL.....Now, will everyone follow the rules of just 2?

Off to work now on this Black Friday! Have a great Day!! :-)

Lucy, did you realise that you can delete them and replace them with others any amount of times until the end date? Just go to 'view my entries' and there is and edit link to place words, and a delete link to delete the picture.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Dave - what photos would you suggest for Miscellaneous?

Schererville, IN(Zone 5a)

Hi Wallaby1.......

No I did not know that.....Thanks for the heads up!!......Now just for some time to submit more picture's! :-)

Thanks again!!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Is it just two photos total we can add or two photos per category??????????????

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Two per category.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Per category.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Limiting the categories has made it extremely difficult for me to choose photos to enter. I, for one (obviously in the minority), feel that when there were more categories the contest was easier to enter especially for someone who has entered lots of photos in the PlantFiles. Also, it will be difficult for me to vote for the winners when so many different kinds of plants/animals,etc. will be entered in each category (especially annuals and perennials). I haven't entered any photos yet due to the difficulty of choosing only 2 per the listed categories.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I am having difficulty choosing as well. I feel like a science fair. The category determines the outcome, so I'm ignoring some great pics based on conjecture about how people will vote much more this year than last year. I do think picking 2 is okay if there are more subcategories like perennial close ups and perennials in the border, etc. (a happy compromise) Maybe next year. (I know I didn't pipe up till after the contest ideas were discussed.)
