PART 2 BF Host Plant Seed Trade DISCUSSION

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Very cool seed sites, Deb. I had seen the value seeds website before and was amazed at their cheap prices! Are the number of seeds in each packet a much smaller amount? I'm just trying to figure out why they are so much cheaper.

That's funny, but I had the same idea about the Visa/Mastercard gift cards that can be recharged. Definitely would cut down on credit card fraud! I received a gift card for Christmas and my first thought was mail-order plants! LOL

I would be very interested in some of the Spotted Joe Pye Weed seeds. Let me know if you want me to share the cost of the seeds, trade for seeds, or however you'd like to do this!

I have been getting myself mentally and physically psyched up to start preparing the bed along the backyard fence. That's going to be a job. Deb - You are so lucky to have help when doing a large bed. You are right, the more people helping the quicker it goes. Plus saves your back from any injuries. (That's something I have to be careful of.) I also want to extend the front yard garden further out into the yard. I want to include the 3 ornamental trees into the garden (to prevent my dh from weed-eating around them and doing damage to their fragile trunks. I fear that one of the trees has some serious damage already. I am hoping because it is a young tree that it will recover. Putting a garden around it ASAP is a priority for me right now to try to save it and the other 2. My family just doesn't appreciate or understand gardens and plants. Though I am sure once it is completed, they will be out there enjoying it! They are just now coming around to appreciating the many butterflies that I have raised and released. (It's been 2 years!) They think I am nuts right now to be so interested in working in our yard all the time, insteading of watching TV or reading books or playing video games! LOL I guess I just don't "get" them! LOL

:-) Becky,
The Value seeds are not great numbers of seeds, but they are at least enough to get a few plants started. They give the quantity in the details on the site, and when they came the numbers were either right on the money or a couple more.. So I am overall pleased with the deal.

On the Mastercard thing, they can not be recharged by the way. If you found one that can be let me know. Maybe there is a greater security that they can't be, in case a vendor stores your card number. I'm fine with that too. Just to be able to place worry free orders seems best to me.

I hear you about the back.. I have to be careful too. ALthough I had lots of help hauling the bags to the back, the rest of the work is mine to do. I might get Kirby to help me dump the wheelbarrows of mixed soil, but I want to me the one doing most of it. Speaking of the damage to your trees, i also like to be the one mowing and weedeating, since I know how easy it is to wound a tree or a special plant only I would know about. LAst summer I got too close to the trunk of one of my Candletrees, and ended up having to cut it down, :-). I love my family and sure don't want them to be put in the position of me being mad at them, lol. So I just deck myself out in comando yard warrior gear and sweatband and get after it myself. Yehaw!!

I have seen tree guard materials at garden stores.. That might be a good investment to check out.

As for the seeds of JPW, I will just throw in what I can spare along with the PV seeds, no worries. Next year when they seed we may both have a lot to share, and just pay forward. I like that system pretty well, seems like everyone gets more in the long run.

Is sweet pea vine a host plant? The vendor info says so but I haven't read on here about it unless I just missed it.

Sweet Pea is in the LegumFamily. Jackie, (DD) planted several varieties, so I will see what comes to us this year in the way of eggs and larvae on them, and let ya know.
:-)

Quoting:
Several varieties of Peavine (lathyrus) are larval hosts for Skippers, Eastern Tailed-Blue (cupido comyntas) and Orange Sulphurs (colias eurytheme).

from TPP, (Cat) on this thread:

Here is a link to a few skippers, and their hosts etc.:
http://www.wingsinflight.com/gardbutt.html#skipp

Orange Sulphur
(Colias philodice)
Feeding on "Indigo Spires" Savia
Larval Host - Clover, Legumes, Alfalfa.

Southern Dogface
(Colias cesonia)
Feeding on Mexican Bush Sage
Larval Host - Clovers, Legumes, Indigo bush.

Funereal Duskywing
(Erynnis funeralis)
Here on both "Verbena" & "Indigo Spires Salvia." Similar to the Zarucco Duskywing but with brighter white fringe.
Larval Host - Legumes
Nectar - Salvia's, Verbena.

I was thinking some sulphurs, and skippers..
