What's the view from your favorite perch? Show and tell...#2

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for coming along...
and please join us, we'd love to see pictures of your perch this past summer or even some new fall photos would be fun...

We live so far in the woods it takes a week for sunlight to get here.
Our phone service is not first rate and as a result, the first thread was slow to load. We came from here if you are just joining us... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/635669/

I will have to wait for my new phone line before I can post photos... soon though I hope!

The rain here has been sparse this year. Our small pond was dry as a bone so it was the perfect time to enlarge it.

I dug up a couple different Louisiana Iris which were growing there. I also dug some wildflowers I wanted to save. This was identified as Blue Mist Eupatorium.

I also dug up some of these plants which bloom in May. This is Spigelia Marilandica ~ Pink Root...

This was the end result... Now, we are waiting for some manna from above....

podster, sorry none of your photos came through. It has been very dry here too. No rain since early June until this past Thurs. had a little rain in the afternoon. All evaporated almost immediately, so I am still irrigating.

This morning there was some frost on my back lawn. Temp. was 34 degrees. Got my Gh cleaned and a few things moved in.

Do any of you know how to make those darn sow bugs crawl out of the pots of flowers before bringing them in.

What's going on with the photos! I am not the only poster having problems... The first one didn't show and then later, it arrived. So I posted the rest ~ apparently unsuccessfully. (((((Scratching my head)))))

Frost Brrrr. Nothing like a nippy night to inspire the GH frenzy!

Apparently the no photos syndrome is a DG glitch. I am not alone. Don't know if I will be able to add later, can't even edit these posts. Oh well, maybe it won't inhibit others... pod

This is the view from my living room. Our house is passive solar with 18 ft of floor to ceiling glass which looks out into my back yard. So this is what I see most of the time I’m at home in fact it’s what I’m looking at right now. I have 6 bird feeders, 1 Wild Bird mix, 1 Sunflower, 1 Suet, 1 Thistle, 1 Hummer feeder and 1 ground level tray with Corn. There is also 1 ground level tray with water and the Fountain / Bird Bath with small pond. As you can image we have lots of wildlife coming and going all the time. Many different birds, squirrels and chipmunks, rabbits, ground hogs, box turtles, frogs and in the winter or during dry spells the deer come in too. The telephone pole is unsightly but it did give us a place to put a birdhouse, the suet feeder we use in the winter for the Woodpeckers and a holder for cob corn that the squires just love. Right now there are a pair of Blue Jays several Cardinals at the feeders. We are doing some replanting and in the next 2 years we will have to move the Butterfly Bush. It’s huge and we get a lot of Butterflies in the summer. This one is white and I just bought a yellow one to plant near by just in case we lose the big one when we move it. There is an Ornamental Plum to the right of the Butterfly bush just out of the picture that gets beautiful lavender/pink flowers in the spring and has burgundy leaves. There is a small Dogwood tree planted just behind the fountain. The flower bed next to the fountain has different perennials, bulbs and annuals planted so it looks different as the seasons change also several large brown stone rocks you can barely see right now. The grassy area (looks rough now) has some ornamental grasses and daylilies. Looks like the sun is coming out I try to send some more pictures later.

Looks like my picture didn't come through either. There is a hummer at the Butterfly Bush now. I'll try another picture.

Hope everyone will re-post their pics!

Holly, butterfly bushes are easy to propogate - just cut a bunch of branches and stick them in the dirt (I usually put them in a pot). Most will root and you won't have to worry about not having one when you move your big one (although it quite likely won't die - I cut one down to the ground this year - they actually do well when cut way back, it sat in its "clump" for quite awhile, I finally put it in the ground in its new spot, and it is doing fine!). I'm in the Pacific Northwest, but I think they are like that everywhere. Good luck and can't wait to see more pics of your home and yard!

I did post a photo , I mean tried, it was a Happy Late Birthday to Betty, I will try again. This is a rose, I planted two this spring , the first that I have planted here, I mean t-roses. this one is Ronald Reagan, it is a self rooted type.

Yes, I have cut it back pretty hard before. The picture ( if I an ever get it to post) is of the corner of my back yard. I planted a hedge of Hollies 10 of them that wrap around the corner in an arc. They are pretty small right now and can’t be seen in the picture. The last one on the back is right behind the butterfly bush. My plan is to cut it to the ground at the end of fall and try to keep it reasonably small until the Hollies get larger then move it to the other side of the Ornamental Plum. It has been there a very long time and my Dad told me good luck he tried to dig one up and said he never did find the end of the root. I’ll have to try propagating it. I haven’t done much of that. Mostly I either buy a plant or someone gives me a plant.

Autumn changes are beginning already, and the views are changing with them. This is looking out to my front yard on a rainy day. This viburnum is the first to show color.

Just put the finishing touches on this "accidental" project the other day. The gazebos were on clearance and the price kept going lower and lower so I finally bought one, thinking I would just set it up out in the backyard and maybe put a picnic table under it. One thing lead to another and the next thing I knew I was digging out sod, using up the bricks and pavers I had sitting around, hauling rocks, building beds on the corners and planting ferns and hostas. It turned into quite a project. I even found a old copper chandelier at a garage sale for a couple of bucks and added candles to it.
It's a nice place to sit on these cool evenings and listen to the screech owls calling in the woods.

Bloomer, that is a work of art. Accidental? I should be so lucky. Good job! :·)

Bloomer,
Wow, That is great, I love the brickwork looks like a carpet pattern. This has given me a whole new idea. One of those down the road projects is for my Husband to build me a pavilion. There are a lot of those projects and it isn’t on the top of the list I would like to put in some plantings and just didn’t quite know how to plant them without the structure. Thinking that the plants would just look stuck out in the yard. Thanks so much for the inspiration. I’ll have to go shopping for end of season bargains.

Katymac,

Your viburnum is beautiful. I’m still green and waiting for color.

Looks like my pictures are posting today. I had trouble yesterday. The description for these was posted yesterday. Please pardon the overgrown yard. We've been away for 2 weeks and had a lot of rain also the Butterfly bush is just about done.

KatyMac the viburnum looks lovely and the rain does too!
Early_Bloomer, I love the gazebo. What a delightful way to spend your spare time... Accidental is best!

Early_Bloomer - that's magnificent. The brick work is especially nice - you must have
experience there?

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Early_Bloomer. What a great looking "accidental" gazebo project. You done good, real good.

tammy....... No, a couple of short brick sidewalks is the extent of my brick work experience. I just happened to have a nice mix of odds and ends around here. Thank you all for the nice comments.
