Whooo, busy folks this afternoon!
I sampled the newly baked bread... actually twice to be sure it was okay, LOL. Hope my ordered loaf pans get here soon as I'm sure my brother would love fresh bread. I'll probably find my old pans the day the new ones arrive, but having more loaf pans isn't bad.
Took the two regular shaped loaves to Brent's folks in the pans she loaned me. Seems they are having a hard time with Brent right now. In return, got a promise from Buster (the Dad) to come and give me some tips on fixing my spring/house, and also got a package of frozen mustard greens from his garden. Yum.
Ann, I cannot believe you have been so meticulous about responding to past threads!
Kooger, great if the currants take hold. If not, spring will do!
~~~~ at everyone I missed.
Coffee and ..... for Sunday, Sept. 3rd
Of course I will share it, it is very simple to make:
set oven at 350', prepare dish lilke mine or a rectengular brownie dish with generous amount of butter and flour to dust
3 1/2 cups unbleached flour
3/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teasponn salt
Sift above into large bowl
whisk two very large eggs
i pnit of sour cream . the natural one
add to flour
stir till all flour is absorbed
last add 1 cup of raisins
put into baking dish, cut with knife a deep slit down the middle , sprinle with a bit of granulated sugar, bake for 1 hour
cool and serve with sweet butter
Maria, why do they call it soda bread when there's so little soda in it?
Sounds Yummy!
Hi everyone
Just got a minute to pop in and say hello. My DB is staying another night, so there won't be much down time for the DH and me to just veg out. *sigh* He's really no bother, though, but seems it's just different when someone else is around.
Defoe, so sorry to hear you lost power at your fish fry, but sounds like you managed to pull everything off ok anyway. I hope your foot gets better and it's just rebelling to having your shoes on. Also hope you're feeling better and rested by tomorrow.
Kooger, sorry you had to postpone your surgery and won't be seeing Meezers as expected, but can certainly understand why you opted to do that. Am praying for good results. :-)
Ann, you're always so faithful to go back to catch up when you miss a few days. My goodness ... I just pick up where I left off. Just can't seem to do that! LOL
Darius, that bread does sound yummy. Since both ends have already been spoken for ... I'll just take a hunk out of the center. I love nice warm bread with real butter. :-)
Well, sorry but I don't have time to speak to everyone right now. To those who are feeling poorly or didn't sleep well last night ... I hope you'll feel better and get the rest you need. To everyone else I'm ~~ at ya for now. Will try to BBL.
edited to say hi to you Maria ... we posted at the same time! LOL That recipe sure looks delicious!
How about : soda reacting with the acid in the sour cream as the leavening agent along with the heat & moisture helping the baking powder along instead of yeast ??
6 hours of bottling Merlot instead of Cabernet. Machine worked perfectly, for the first time. One case per minute, or 4,320 bottles of a wonderful Merlot. Too tired to stay to help bottle the 200 or so cases of Cabernet Franc.
Darius, the bread looks wonderful and I can almost smell it from here.
Maria thank you for the soda bread recipe. Haven't made one for years, and your recipe with the sour cream sounds much better than mine.
To everyone, pleasant dreams
Good evening all,
Phew! I'm even less cut out to be a hostess these days than I used to be. DH spoke to a long-time friend of mine the other day to give him directions to get here, but unbeknownst to me told him to come "around 12 ish", not realizing that I had put 2 PM on the invitations. Of course he and his Phillipino wife showed up around 1 and I was definitely NOT ready. As it turned out, she insisted on helping me out --- put so much flour on the surface and on my pie crust dough that I was afraid the pasties would turn out to be filled "rocks" and also insisted on "helping" me by putting my hair into a French braid. Okay. I really didn't want to insult her so just went along. The pasties actually came out pretty good --- both the "real" ones and the vegetarian versions. (Yeah, I heard you Sheila, but I made a marinade for the tofu with soy sauce, red wine, Chianti vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder, A1 sauce, and a few drops of hot sauce, and mixed that with the potato, onion, and turnip today before making the pasties. I don't think that they were all that "yucky" in the end. The French braid was nice but very, very unbecoming to me, so I pulled it out about 1 minute after they left.)
Two of my four brothers made it over here today. The oldest is having a very bad time of it lately as his SO is slowly dying of liver disease (caused by all the heart medication she's been taking for years now.) and the youngest had to work today. We also had invited two very long-term friends of mine and their wives. I mentioned one of the couples earlier in this post. The other couple also made it, but my friend John has had a very bad year. He had to go in for surgery again last November, then had chemo and radiation for the second time. His wife told me that it's been a pretty awful year, but that he's been doing fairly well for the past two weeks. He seemed okay today, but the whole thing is very difficult to deal with. Woodspirit, I know what you mean and all I can do is to wish you and your sister the best and hope that things work out that way.
I was up until 1 AM last night trying to bake an English cake for DH's's birthday. I have always had lousy luck with English recipes for baking. It always seems that they call for far too little in the way of liquids to balance out the dry ingrediants. I ended up pouring more orange juice and a tiny bit of water into the dough as it seemed more like bread dough than cake batter and I couldn't imagine how I could possibly "fold" whipped eggwhites into something that stiff. I also used some self-rising flour in with the plain flour as I didn't have quite as much of the regular flour as I'd thought. Luckily, it actually came out quite good. There's not a crumb left, as a matter of fact.
V-ann, you are amazing! I have a hard enough time trying to keep up with everyone while I have the opportunity to check in several times a day. Now that you've been mostly out of touch for a week, you're doing a great job of re-capping and responding to everyone. I have to say that I'm waiting along with everyone else here to hear about your experiences in the Orient!
Everyone has left now and the cats have all come out of hiding. If you didn't know us, you'd never in a million years guess that we have four cats. They managed to completely disappear until the coast was clear again. One of my SILs brought her silky terrier, Buddy, with her and our cats took that (plus the advent of several humans they didn't know), as a command to make themselves scarce. We had hoped to introduce DK to the family members, at least, but there was no finding them, even armed with a flashlight.
Bonnie, I sure hope that your foot recovers swiftly. Are you sure that it was just putting shoes back on that made it act up that way?
I have read everything that you've written, people, but please forgive me for not remembering and responding to it all right now. I'm afraid that all I want to do at the moment is to veg out and relax! I will be back in a moment to post the link to tomorrow's thread. I know that it's kind of early, but I really need to chill out for awhile.
Goodnight Gracie!
Here's the link to the September 4th Coffee and ...... thread. See you there!
Hey folks,
I'm not really so meticulous. Just started reading through what happened in the last week and found I couldn't keep my mouth shut. LOL. Pasted the comments into WordPerfect so as not to lose them and then pasted them into a message here. Did you notice my spelling got better? WP has spell check. LOL
Anyway, got busy and didn't get any farther. Have looked at most of today's messages, but will reply tomorrow. I think an unusually early bedtime is in order. We will go babysit grandkids for awhile tomorrow morning as a friend of DSIL dies suddenly last Thursday and the service is tomorrow morning.
DD#2 phoned from Vancouver for a recipe. It's her 32nd birthday today - I was in labor all Labour Day with her, but she arrived early on the Tuesday morning. We called when we passed through yesterday, but since we got the earlier flight didn't try to see her. She has Mark's parents and grannie with her this weekend. Her call got me starting to organize the recipes that I already have in the computer. Remember that organizing my large loose leaf recipe book was to be a retirement project? Well step #1, I think is to make subfolders in the computer and divide what I already have into individaul recipes (some are several to a page) within each category. Got that done for appetizers.
Will catch up tomorrow.
Ann
Woods., Betty you can unload any time , I'm so very very sorry about your Sister..prayers for strength for you and all the family at this time.. May she know she is loved and prayers for her..
I want to try the soda bread to since I'm irish to.. sounds good.. thanks Maria for recipe hope your getting better every day.
I used to bake all time bread everything but quit all now for 2 yrs..
Have a good Monday everyone.. and a good night to night restful. ~~~~~
Twyla
Say Goodnight, Gracie.
Well, just had to pop in to end my day. Went to church tonight, and had coffee and left over desserts from last night after church. When I got home, went to the garden to get a few peppers, and ended up picking everything and have a 1/2 bushel of peppers. So tomorrow will be spent making more spaghetti sauce, chopping some to freeze, and maybe some pepper relish. Seems like the garden is winding down kind of early this year. Still have tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and just sowed the turnips last week. The fall squash will be ready soon, acorn, and cushaw.
The foot is better, and honestly just think it was rebelling about the shoes. I put on tennis shoes, as I knew that I would be on my feet for hours. Since I am used to barefoot, flip flops and sandles during the summer, I think that it was too much of a shock to the feet to not rebel. LOL.
Hope, I didn't know you were Irish. I am part Irish, part Dutch. I think that the Irish are a hearty lot, don't know what the Dutch heritage gives me though.
I am going to try that soda bread Maria. It sounds so good. Sure hope that you are feeling better, and what is this about depression? You gotta save that for the dead of winter, when you can't get out and do anything.
McCool, that shindig sounded lovely. Don't you just hate it when someone comes in and tries to remake you in an instant? I know that she probably was sincere in wanting to help, but I always wait for direction before jumping in. Tell DH happy birthday from us, hope it was a good one, and that he enjoys many more. I have never tried pasties, but have heard of them, and would like the experience of tasting some made by experts. You could tell me ingredients all day long, but until I have observed the process making them, then tasting them, they are still a foreign food to me.
Viann, thanks for being so diligent in replying to posts made in your absence. I can't do that, just read what has gone on, and then take up in the present.
I01, I sure hate it that you and DH will not have much quality time together. When is DB leaving? Maybe you can make a date for one night this week, and enjoy 3 or 4 days rolled into that time!!
DH is having severe back pain, don't know if it was from his fall, or just an old injury that got stirred up. He has a Dr appointment for Wednesday, his regular 3 month check up, as he is on meds that must be monitored. He is planning on asking the Dr. to refer him to a pain center, as he has been going to a chiropractor for the past 8 months, and doesn't see any improvement. Sure hope he gets some relief, by what ever means, he is taking pain pills on a 4 hour basis, and gets about 2 hours of relief from them.
Well, gotta get moving toward the bedroom, the nap this afternoon should not interfere with sleep tonight, as I am already nodding off.
Hope everyone has a good pain free restful night. Good night John Boy.
Not that kind of depression, Bonnie, :-)) the kind I have is being in ratten mood because I can't seem to get feeling better.
Good night all, sweet dreams
Maria, glad to hear that.
M5 , Thanks a bunch for putting me onto Brennan's .
I like the style of the open air market , reminds me of Florida. It looks almost like the Brennan's in Monroe ( I was there about 5 years ago with the HOG Chapter.)
I emptied my huge custom saddlebags before I left home . Didn't get too many peaches because I knew they would suffer in the 40 mile ride back home. Had some after dinner tonight and will do something really wicked with the rest for breakfast .................. uuuuuuum - um
Got DH some micro brew from the Flying Dog Brewery in Denver . This one is called 'In Heat' Wheat. Appropriate since Sammi just did exactly that ............ lol
Also got a couple of good sized wedges of full cream Brie with a nice crust on it and excellent chewy whole grain seeded rye for tomorrow. Will just add on of my impromptu 'kitchen sink' salads and I will be all set for dinner tomorrow evening.
A good day for a nice little ride , just cool enough for my fav windbreaker and driving .
gloves.
Gas up on 164 and the rock highway was 2.98 for premium. Who would have believed that those prices would make me happy ?
As Johnny Carson might have said ...............
"May the fleas of a thousand camels infest the armpits of the fat rich petro execs"
