This is the one I was wondering about earlier, but I didn't say anything. I didn't want to look stupid, but sometimes it's inevitable, lol!!
This is what I found in PlantFiles....it's called Bolivian Jew or Turtle Vine there http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2566/index.html
and there's also a variegated form of it with pinkish white in it, which I have a bit of,
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/103323/index.html
I've also seen it for sale at Wal-Mart being called "Inch Plant" but nothing on the PF matches, so I'm assuming WM was wrong.
I've moved mine around too much to have enough to share or I would offer everyone some. Maybe next spring I'll be able to share some. I love sharing plants! Someone should remind me though or I'll forget.
Wandering Jew Plants
Pod, I'm loving that little lizard! We don't have wildlife like that around here, it gets too cold for the little guys. What type of plant is that anyway? I'm afraid to guess!
Oriole, go out this evening just before dark when the Datura flowers are open or just about open and stick your nose right down into the flower, but don't touch it. Take a big ole whiff. You'll smell them for certain. Be careful, they may just make you dizzy. Seriously. The scent is intoxicating. Mine aren't strongly scented this year, but I blame myself...not enough ferts I'm guessing. I'll try for some pics tonight. Last year's Dats fragrace was so strong you could smell them just walking by, and bending down to sniff would nearly knock me off my feet. Those were the solid white, the ones with Intoxica in their name....and they lived up to it, lol!!
Yes I checked I agree thats a baby jew. My grandaughter got a few sprigs of it somewhere and gave to me. We didnt know what it was.
Ill check out the datura this evening. Thanks all.
I put a couple more on another thread. begonia id. check it out for me will you? dixie
heathrjoy ~ My feelings are hurt, do you mean you would let me look stupid all alone? : ))) I am glad to know the correct name for baby jew. It is pretty and grows freely. Does yours bloom?
I do love the lizards, we get tons of them in the summer. Right now alot of babies like this one.
The plant that houses the lizard was called a moses in the cradle, moses in a boat, three men in a boat, etc. This is what is really is... http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/650/index.html
You never have to worry about me letting anyone look stupid all alone, LOL!!
I haven't had mine that long, but there's been no blooms on it so far. It's had reasonable growth, if I'd quit moving it from place to place it would have a chance to amount to something, the poor thing.
I have a Moses In The Cradle, but mine is striped and much smaller than yours. When I finally get it into a smaller pot I'll send along a pic.
This was my Bolivian jew when it first came to stay. The block of wood is about 2 ft tall. The jew now is touching the patio. I will need to give it a serious haircut before moved in this fall...
There is a striped moses but I don't know if it is a smaller variation. This critter has grown with a vengance. ; ))
Pod, you forgot your pic!!! lol
Here's my Datura. I'm just loving it. I finally started fertilizing it and scent is wonderful...ahhh! This is about as open as the blooms get. It seems very light sensitive. They may not open any more than this because they are near a street light...I can't bear to move them though, they are near my front porch.
Pod that is a gorgeous plant. After giving it a haircut why not root the cuttings in water and start a whole new plant? Or, maybe you already had that planned.
Do you have it nailed to that block of wood? I'm just thinking that could be a nice and easy plant stand...blocks of the same thickness, but in different heights. Maybe even paint it with that spray stone stuff if you want to get real fancy. I like the old wood look myself. Maybe paint it to match my porch, then sand a bunch off to make it look really old and used. Then when I'm having a bad day I'll throw rocks at it to distress both it and me. =^) LOL!
If any of my Datura seeds ripen I'll share some seeds with you. But I'll tell you right now that you'll have to remind me, I'll forget. I have two pods that may (or may not) ripen. I'm sooooo hoping they do! There's about a gazillion seeds in each one.
OOh. I like that on that block of wood. How is your temps? I just came from getting groceries and of course we had to stop at the diner. Talked to a couple on the way home for a visit. From N Texas and they were telling me abt their weather and water restrictions. Dixie
Hey, no need for extra distressing here. This wood has been there, done that! I am never one to pass up a treasure (read junk). Don't need to attach the plant as it is sturdy enough. I have seen folks take telephone poles or hardwood logs and sink them in flower beds in clusters or alone. Then perch plants on top. I liked it...
Actually, when I go for the hair clippers, I will have cuttings to gladly share. I intend to hang the basket when winter comes. I wonder if the plant will be ugly then and I should just start a new one. I like to use a pedestal or holder for my plants as I have a boyzo who likes to help water by lifting his leg.
I am going to pass on the datura seed. I have seeds for the plain old fashioned white and the purple double ruffle too. Just need a reminder to start them in the spring.
Our area is not a drought devastated. No water restrictions but definite burn bans. Folks aren't too smart about that. The ranchers are in a bind for hay cuttings as it is slim across the US. One of these years the cycle will change...
We have had light showers for the last 3 days ~ a total of 1/4 inch of rain. Whew! The humidity is higher than the temp now. High 70's at night, mid 90's daytime. At least our 100 + spell is broken. But Oriole, I wouldn't trade for your temperatures come winter. : )) pod
My sis lives in Silsbee, between Houston and Beaumont...does that count as east TX? lol We visited her once a few years ago, and she was just home earlier this month. I could move to TX. Look out Pod, here I come!!!
The big thing around here that folks put in their garden beds, for some unknown reason, is large tires. Then they paint them white. I've never figured this out. BIG tires, like off of plow trucks. Well, I guess that's a bad example for Pod. HUGE tires, like as big as my whole car. I just did a Google search to try and find a pic and nothing came up. How strange is that? lol. I don't know how this got started around here, but you see it quite often. Sometimes it even looks cute. Sometime I'll snap a pic and share it.
Anyway, here's a pic of my Bolivian Jew, the pink part that looks like a bloom isn't a bloom, it's new growth. I had to lean over our grill and snap this shot blind...it didn't come out too bad!
Heather is yours varigated.
Silsbee is most definitely east Texas but so is Texarkana... We got plenty of room in Texas, come on... Room to grow too. : )
Yep, mine is varigated. It's got stripes of pink and maybe even a bit of white in it. The new growth is completely pink. I can't explain that. It looks like a bloom, but feels just like the leaves. I'm just glad it's got new growth! I did put some Osmocote on it just the other night, so hopefully it will have a lot more new growth before I move it for the umpteenth time...then it's coming in for winter and I'm letting the poor thing just grow and grow. Maybe by spring I'll have a plant to be proud of.
Ooooh, to move to TX!! You know, my sis has a fire place...and for the life of me I can't figure out why. I mean it's pretty and all...but it's a waste of space! I think she has a chance to use it about once every 3-5 years. I could have used a fireplace every day this week, it's been so damp here, but too early to turn on the heat. DH just doesn't have that "TX attitude" tho, I think either you're born w/ that or you're not...and he just wasn't. Me, on the other hand, well...somedays!! Please know that I don't mean any offense by that "attitude" remark.
We have two fireplaces at home, one in the workshop and one at work. As we are remote, the power goes off frequently and sometimes extensively. The most recent was Rita for 5 days, the longest was 10 days during an ice storm. When it is cold (not during Rita) it is nice to stay warm. Also believe in propane stove, still like to eat. I pull my hair out trying to save these plants if it is that grim...
If by spring you have any to share, please let me know. I have never had the var one. How pretty.
Now, how is that fair? I don't even have one. Not even a pretend one. I've thought about building one of those pretend ones...those ones that they use lots of moulding on...and just setting it up at Christmastime. LOL!! My DB had one of those in his apartment and I thought it was real till one day he was painting and he picked it up moved it. The inside was just painted flat black and it fooled me. They kept a nice screen in front of it too though...that helped the overall effect.
Someday when we get our dream home I'll have a "sitting room" for company with pretty furniture and a fireplace and NO tv. Also a fireplace in the bedroom....cozy.
How badly did you get hit by Rita? Not too bad, I hope. Katrina did go right over my sis, but they really didn't get much damage, just a few holes in the roof and branches down. Afterwards they left because of no utilities, no police, no fire dept, etc. I was begging her to get out of there. I'm still amazed that she had cell service, what would we do without things like that? So, yes, I see your point in having fireplaces in TX and propane stoves...I guess I'm just a bit jealous, that's all. =^P I'm the only one in my family that doesn't have (or hasn't had) a fireplace....whine, whine, whine!
Snboyken, if you are interested in my varigated Bolivian Jew...and if it grows well over winter, which it should...I'll share some with you next spring. You'll just have to remind me because most likely I'll forget if you don't.
snboyken, I posted while you were writing yours. Most certainly you can have some! =^) When I'm bringing it in for winter, if I find I have enough to share I'll let you know and send out before it gets too cold to ship. It roots just as easy as any Jew. Otherwise I'll start some for you asap. Just make sure you remind me...and don't be shy about it either!! I take meds for back problems that sometimes make me forgetful (well, I blame it on the meds, lol). So, if by next spring you don't hear from me make sure to look me up. This plant is too pretty not to share!
thanks heather, sounds great. I have several types of jews as well if you are interested.
Heathr ~ just a quick mention and then I'll leave this forum to plants... if and when you put a fireplace in the bdrm, raise it up off the floor. Then you can lounge in bed and enjoy the flames : )). pod
Thanks Pod...as long as they stay in the fireplace!
Snboyken, maybe some of the white/green Jew if you have enough? If not then you can just have some of mine. Don't worry about it.
I have what I think is a wondering Jew...It is totally burgundy and large leaves...Have no pic..I will be giving it a hair trim when I move it inside.....I also have the fuzzy Jew...It will also get clipped and I also have Silver Squill...Several pots that needs separated...Anyone interested in that??????
Bluepoppy, what are you looking for in trade?
a few more of my trads. This first one is one I picked up at Kartuz a few weeks ago. It's a keeper for sure!! Tradescantia zanonia http://www.kartuz.com/p/71949/Tradescantia+zanonia.html
This is one I picked up at Annies Annuals last year http://anniesannuals.com/plants/plant_display.asp?prodid=2223&account=none
some noid.
Laurie, I think maybe you did a boo-boo...sending you a mail so you can send those gorgeous pics to the right thread. Not that I don't want you here, I've missed you! =^)
Heather
Hi plant-lovers,
Is anyone besides me uncomfortable with calling this group of Tradescentias "jews?" I grew up with "wandering" jews" but even then the name seemed strange to me.
xxxxx, Carrie
Ok, I did the boo-boo. What was that I said before about looking stupid being inevitable??? LOL!
I still have to look up what Trads are, but it turns out that they are, at the very least, related to Jews. I have so much to learn...including to keep my mouth shut until I do a bit of research, lol. =^) What's new?
So sorry for the interruption or any embarrassment I may have caused. I'll be researching each of these beauties later. Thanks for sharing them!
Heather
Sorry Carrie, I was writing while you posted and I missed your post. I guess there's been some reclassification on the Trads...or something. =^)
I have always called them Jews, I didn't know until last year they were Trads.
I dont know what it is, but it sure is pretty..good luck in your search to find what it is...
Char
Thanks Char, not a great photo but.... I'm not a great photographer either.
I have no clue what it is, Keep us posted on the growth.
