Wandering Jew Plants

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

What do the back of the leaves look like? It puts me in the mind of 'Moses in the Cradle'....

Just another 'I don't know but sure is purty' here. What forum is it where they ID plants? You could post it there, they are usually very quick in IDing things...they amaze me.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, what about Callisia Fragrans? It really looks like something in the Tradescantia family!!!

I would be embarrassed to post this wimpy guy in the ID forum. Maybe if it puts on a little muscle, I will. Those guys ARE good at IDing but...
It doesn't favor the one I know as Callisia Fragrans but I do think we are in the right family. I will try to check the back of leaves tomorrow. I dread the shorter days. Get home from work and there is no outside daylight time left. : [ pod

Shoot, Pod, I've seen pics on there asking for IDs that were weeds...and even the folks that posted the thread knew it. If you knew what it was you could help it to get some muscle. I'd post it!

Thanks heathrjoy. I guess you might have inspired me. Just don't have a great photo, it is so tiny. When I ask for ID's, they ask for better pictures...

Have you gotten an ID for sure yet? I thought it was a good pic....I've seen much worse from my own camera and posted under my own name so don't worry! lol

Piedmont, SC(Zone 7b)

I was given some purple heart cuttings a couple of weeks ago. I put them in a pot and they are still living. Can I leave them out during the winter? Are these perrinials? I would appreciate any help.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Smokey ~ in this area, they can stay in flower beds and return in the spring. I would think if you leave it in flower beds, mulch it for insulation and it should do o.k. If not, holler ~ we'll fix you up with more.

Heathrjoy ~ I hadn't taken time to post the odd one yet. I got worried as it shed a leaf it didn't have to spare but it is now putting on new tiny leaves. If it is a jew, it should transplant easily. I will work up my courage to post... : )) pod

LOL Pod. Have you posted it yet? Any ID yet? I love a good mystery.

Hey all: I saw the photo's of all the beautiful wandering jew. I have some that looks like the one you called baby jew. It began as a basket plant like yours many years ago. I made the mistake of hanging it in a tree in the yard and some of it landed on the ground and it took over! Fairly easy to pull out, but I spent a couple of years pulling it out of flower beds, must have thown out at least a couple thousand baskets worth! Should have potted it up and sold it at a yard sale! LOL. Anyway here's a photo of a bed by my back driveway that it has taken over. Grows as a great ground cover, wouldn't you say? It dies down in the winter if we have a cold winter and comes back thriving in the spring! I do like the baby form, just don't like it to take over all my flower beds!

Lin, I think I would love to rummage thru your plant collection. I had something similar happen with Tahitian Bridal Veil. It grew huge, would easily break off and root. I have magnificent stands of it which aren't watered and freeze down to return each spring. Others might consider it invasive but I rather like the carefree spirit of it. Other types I put in the ground that come back are Purple heart and variegated purple heart. May have to try some baby jew in the ground too. ~ pod

Hey Pod:

I can send you some of this baby jew if you want!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Lin, Thanks so much for the kind offer but I will resist. I have a pot of it which I need to give a trim and a haircut... The photo is from July, This is dragging on the ground now. Could I share with you??!?? : )) pod

Hey Pod:

LOL, Thanks for the offer Pod ... but, I've actually been trying to get rid of it for years! Even though it's very pretty .... it takes over everything in this part of the country! Just can't seem to keep it contained!

Lin, I would love some if you want to share. I have marigold seeds if you want some.

I use wandering Jew as a ground cover in my raised flower beds. Boy does it thrive!! The plant is much bigger than when it was in hanging baskets.

This is the fuzzy purple jew... (I hope)

Hi Judy, I love wandering Jew. I accidentally let its' kin ~Tahitian Bridal Veil slip out of its' pot. It is covering a large area and comes back yearly.

I had been trying to find out the botanical name for this sweetie, to no avail. I think I like your name Podster- fuzzy purple wandering jew.:) I have some too and fell in love with it when I received it last month(?)! Am pleased to say it's doing well. I hope that it takes off by leaps and bounds next Spring/Summer!

Podster....love the TBV as well. The flowers look like Baby's Breath, don't you think? It was an extra special treat to receive this one in bloom!

Podster, what were you saying about putting on some muscle? My guy needs some steroids, don't you think? LOL I'm sure it will be fine. I have it up close to my west facing window and am hoping it will make some dramatic changes. The 'Sillamontana' prefers to be kept drier than most of the others in the same family and need more light, correct?

Thumbnail by GrowHappy
Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi GH ~ I like that 'HiGH' on plants of course. Your fuzzy purple is wonderful. It rooted easily and is growing well. If you find the correct name, please post it here. Enquiring minds want to know! : ))
Do be careful with the TBV, in your zone it will likely come back from roots too and will own the place! pod

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Ahhh, and then there's the all green one that I also fell in love with! What's not to love about Tradescantia?;)

Thumbnail by GrowHappy
Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

And here is the itty bitty Rhoeo Spathacea 'Variegata'. She throws a fit if she dries too much. She's pretty much screamed at me for letting her go a day too long without water! I can't tell you how many leaves I've lost off of this plant, but she's still hanging in there! And if she's hanging with me, I MUST treat her better!

Your "Sillamontana" is a name I'm not familiar with but the plant resembles...

Oh and there's Callisia Fragrans. Is this also known as the basket plant? I love it! I sprinkled some cinnamon on the tips of the leaves that were acting up after arriving. It stopped whatever was happening to them and continues to perk up week by week.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Pods- I think yours and mine are one and the same. It's also called 'White Velvet' WJ.

Here is cutting of variegated Callisia Fragrans....

Pods- Your Moses is just awesome with the blooms! Mine are s howing no signs of even wanting to to the extra mile. Can you come talk to them, please? They a bit of encouragement!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Cinnamon? That is a new one on me... Where did you learn that.
I have the Callisia Fragrans. It even bloomed for me this summer. I was disappointed. Threw the Momma plant away as it became ugly. I can't usually do that. I have so many urchins I have them in a big tub. What to do?

Thumbnail by podster
Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry to say this but these guys are just lucky to be in a climate where they stay outdoors. I will move them in for a few months Nov thru Mar and they don't get much else from me. I don't fertilize much and only water when conditions are dire. They thrive on neglect and love of course. ; ) pod
